Abstract
Rapidly changing information technologies and changes in new information type provide a new turning point in librarian's role and job as an information specialist. A library traditionally processes and manages paper-type information resources. But, with new requirements to library and changes of information sources, a digital library for use, management, and delivery of information came into existence. The appearance of digital library provides new direction for information processing and requires various changes in roles of information specialists for appropriately and quickly providing information and knowledge for users. The developments of information technology related to information and knowledge and environmental changes around library provide information specialist, who have a role in information processing and delivery, with new challenging areas. On the other hand, the traditional library areas can be infringed upon by those factors. With such rapid changes, an information specialist with a major in library and information science makes various efforts to keep their status as an information specialist and performs their role in information siciety. Currently, they partially lead an active role in the areas relating information and knowledge. This paper focuses on information specialist' current status and role in not library areas but new areas related to information technologies, and figures out requirements to take firm position in those areas.
급격한 정보기술, 저작도구의 발전 및 새로운 형태의 자료에 대한 요구 등은 정보전문직인 사서의 업무와 역할에 있어서 새로운 전환점을 제공하고 있다. 전통적으로 도서관은 인쇄형태의 정보를 주로 처리하고 관리하였으나 도서관에 대한 새로운 요구와 정보형식의 변화는 새로운 형식의 정보에 대한 유통과 관리 및 이용을 위한 전자도서관을 출현하게 하였으며 이러한 전자도서관의 출현은 정보처리의 새로운 방향성을 제시하여 주고 있으며 다량의 정보 속에서 이용자에게 적절한 정보를 신속하고 정확하게 제공하는 역할을 수행하는 정보전문직에 대한 새로운 요구를 가져오고 있다. 이렇게 정보와 관련된 정보기술의 발전과 사회적인 새로운 요구들은 이들 정보의 처리와 유통을 담당하고 있는 정보전문가, 즉 사서를 양성하는 문헌정보학분야에 새로운 도전의 영역을 제공하는 한편 문헌정보학의 전통적인 영역을 침범 당할 수 있는 양면성을 보여 주고 있다. 이러한 사회적인 흐름과 함께, 정보전문직으로서 문헌정보학전공자들은 자신들의 위치와 역할을 수행하기 위하여 다양한 노력을 기울이고 있으며 현재에도 많은 정보관련 분야에서 활발한 활동을 벌이고 있다. 본 글에서는 현재 문헌정보학전공자들이 전통적인 영역인 도서관이 아닌 새로운 분야에서 활동하고 있는 현황, 역할 및 지위에 대하여 알아보았으며 이를 통하여 정보전문직으로 확고히 자리매김을 하기 위하여 요구되는 자질에 대하여 알아보았다.
