A Tracing Survey on Pilot House B-type in Seoul and Reclamation House in Jeju Island named Ctesiphon

At the transition period of the government's housing supply strategy from the social welfare to the construction industry level, the Korean National Housing Corporation was established and initiated '63 Pilot Housing Construction Project in order to promote the mass construction of inexpensive housing and to support housing supply increase strategy. The pilot house B-type in Suyuri, Seoul was one of the '63 Pilot Housing Construction Project. Throughout the comparative study of field survey and building drawings, this paper is to testify that the B-type house of Suyuri and the Ctesiphon house of Isidore ranch in Jeju island were both rooted in the Ctesiphon system which an irish engineer, James Hardress de Warenne Waller had invented. The investigation of the structural system and construction method of the both houses verified that they all followed the same Ctesiphon arched system of James Waller's patented technology, which all walls and roofs were single integrated structural component. Since there has left few Ctesiphon system buildings in the world, this tracing survey suggests that the Ctesiphon house in the Isidore ranch need to be evaluated as the modern architectural heritage and the cultural asset of Korea with its great value and significance in the architectural history and the productional technology history.
