Abstract

The purpose of this study is to verify the moderating effect of alcohol use on the relationship between work overload and insomnia among IT workers. Through this study, we aimed to understand the mental health status of IT workers and the relationships among work, sleep health, and alcohol use. For this study, a sample of 501 IT workers completed the online questionnaires. The collected data were statistically analyzed using SPSS 25.0. The results showed that levels of insomnia were significantly higher in the at-risk groups for work overload and alcohol use compared to the normal group. Further, the moderating effect of alcohol use on the relationship between work overload and insomnia was confirmed. Based on the results, we discussed the possibility that a heavy workload could induce insomnia and the possibility that drinking, as an individual coping behavior, might further aggravate insomnia. Finally, we suggested the need for support to improve the mental health of IT workers.
