Abstract

This study identifies the necessity of design journalism amid the changes in the digital environment and explores the potential for expanding critical design discourse, which is essential for deepening public understanding of design's societal roles. It reviews literature on design criticism and design thinking, specifically focusing on how these frameworks have evolved in response to shifting media landscapes and how they can inform contemporary journalistic practices. The spread of information through social media has led to the consumption of design merely as a visual trend, weakening the criticality and expertise of traditional journalism. In this context, design journalism can play an important role as a medium that interprets and communicates the social meaning and context of design, beyond simply introducing trends. This study aims to propose a direction for design journalism and expand it into research for building a practical model.
