Abstract

Branched pipes in water distribution network are essential for delivering water from trunk mains to consumers, yet some are illegally connected or poorly documented, reducing system efficiency. This study examines a method to detect multiple branched pipes in a simple pipeline system using both numerical transient analysis and physical experiment. The main objective is to investigate the feasibility of transient-based detection and to assess the sensitivity associated with pipe parameters. The developed approach integrates the conventional method of characteristic with a nonlinear pressure-response model representing real ball valve maneuver. Both the numerical analysis and laboratory experiment were conducted on a pilot-scale system containing two branched pipes, while accounting for inherent experimental uncertainties. Distinct pressure signatures observed in both approaches demonstrate the potential of the proposed method for detecting multiple branched pipes. The results also reveal that the detection performance is highly sensitive to heterogeneous wave speeds and inconsistent transient initiation within the pipeline system.
