A Study of the Medical Discourses in the Second Issue of Hanbang Uiyakgye

This study examines the medical discourses published in the second issue of Hanbang Uiyakgye, which is regarded as the first Korean medical academic journal of traditional Korean medicine, by analyzing both their contents and the careers of their authors. The principal contributors to the second issue included former royal physicians of the Taeeuiwon, figures associated with official medical institutions, instructors at private Korean medical training schools, and leading members of the Joseon Uisaenghoe. Drawing on their experience in royal medicine and traditional medical education, these authors rearranged major fields of Korean medical knowledge-including yunqi theory, cold damage, gynecology, acupuncture and moxibustion, pediatrics, internal damage, Sasang medicine, and modern physiology and hygiene-within the format of a modern academic journal. This study argues that the second issue of Hanbang Uiyakgye is an important source for understanding how Korean medical leaders in the early colonial period reaffirmed the authority of traditional medicine while reconfiguring Korean medical knowledge through education and scholarly publication.
