Abstract
This study explored how a prospective music therapist reconstructed the voice developed through a musician identity into a therapeutic voice during the process of becoming a music therapist and examined the reflective meanings of this transformation. Drawing on the researcher's experiences as a music educator and performer, this autoethnographic study analyzed graduate coursework assignments, written supervision records from clinical practicum, mandalas from music and imagery experiences, internship logs, and self-video evaluation notes. Data were analyzed using content analysis with emotion and values coding. The findings revealed three ways in which the researcher's musician voice was reconstructed into a therapeutic voice: from evaluative and corrective to listening and reflective, from self-demonstrative to relational, and from directive to one that waited and created space for clients' expressions. The reflective meanings were identified as "a voice of awareness," "a voice of growth," and "a voice of coexistence," representing recognition of the emotions embedded in one's voice, attunement to clinical contexts, and relationship-building through shared musical experiences. The findings suggest that therapeutic voice extends beyond vocal ability or musical technique to function as a therapeutic medium integrating self-understanding, emotional attunement, relational sensitivity, and clinical judgment, highlighting the need for reflective exploration of voice in music therapy education and supervision.
