Abstract
This study examined the development of hospice music therapy in Korea in relation to the institutionalization of hospice and palliative care, practice records, and prior research. Policy documents, scholarly literature, and publicly available institutional materials from 1995 to 2026 were analyzed using a documentary-based historical path analysis, with the United States used as a comparative case. Findings suggest that hospice music therapy in Korea was not first introduced as an independent professional service within the national healthcare system; music-based practices preceded the institutional establishment of hospice and palliative care, followed by regular practice by music therapists. As hospice and palliative care services expanded, related research and practice extended beyond patients' symptoms and quality of life to family members and caregivers, bereavement care, and home-based hospice care. Education and professional activities specific to hospice and palliative care were also observed. However, music therapists are not legally mandated hospice staff, no separate reimbursement for music therapy was identified, and inconsistent terminology has made the scope and role of professional music therapy less clearly visible. Future development requires clarification of terminology and practice categories, professional staffing standards, education and certification systems, standardization of documentation and evaluation, and discussion of funding structures.
