The Effect of Bordeaux Mixture for Control of Grape cv. 'Kyoho' downy Mildew (Plasmopara viticola) (석회보르도액 살포가 거봉포도의 노균병 발생에 미치는 영향)

  • Bordeaux mixture made with each grade of lime and copper sulfate was tested general property and disease control value. Bordeaux mixture was made by composition of each grade of lime (95%, 80%) with each grade of copper sulfate(98.5%, 95%). Phytotoxicity was evaluated to Bordeaux mixture made with each grade of lime and copper sulfate, and then low grade copper sulfate (95%) was more severely in the grapevine leaf. Bordeaux mixture, made with each grade lime and copper sulfate, were tried to evaluate control effects of downy mildew in field. As a result, Bordeaux mixture (95% of lime and 98.5% of copper sulfate, 6-6) applied 5 times at late in June was showed more effective disease control value than any other trials of Bordeaux mixture. There was no difference in nutrient status of petiole each treatment. But fruit characteristics were shown more slightly improved quality.

Protection of Peach Trees from Bacterial Shot Hole with Bordeaux Mixture Spray during the Postharvest Season (복숭아 수확후 보르도액 살포에 의한 세균성구멍병 방제효과)

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the prevention of bacterial shot hole by Bordeaux mixture when it was sprayed on peach trees after harvest. bordeaux mixture was sprayed on \`Mibaeko\` peach trees 1 to 3 times after mid September, and the occurrence of bacterial shot hole was examined in the next year. Bacterial shot hole in leaves appeared from mid May and thereafter increased gradually. The more times was sprayed Bordeaux mixture, the less peaches were diseased with bacterial shot hole. At the beginning of August, the peach harvest time, the disease incidence of the untreated control plot was 27.4 to 38.1%, while the disease incidence was 9.7 to 31.8% when Bordeaux mixture was sprayed. The control value ranged from 16.5 to 64.6%. Occurrence of the fruit disease was similar to that of the leaf disease. Incidence of the fruit disease in the untreated control was 17.2 to 21.6%, but incase of the chemical treatment, it was 5.0 to 12.2 %, showing 41.9 to 70.9% of the control value. Chemical injury on peach leaves were not found in the 4-12 and 408 types, but occurred in some degrees in the 6-6 type of Bordeaux mixture.

  • Lime-bordeaux mixture has been used to prevent diseases in the field of ginseng. The purpose of this study is to investigate the efficacy of lime-bordeaux depending on the concentration and treatment time on major diseases of ginseng such as Alternaria blight and anthracnose, and to evaluate the root growth of ginseng. Lime-bordeaux caused damage on leaf when it was sprayed on ginseng between April and early May. No difference was found in root growth by spraying lime-bordeaux mixture between ratio 4-4 and 8-8 ratio in concentration. Plot of 6-6 raito and 8-8 ratio appeared to be similar efficacy compared to that of practical chemical control. However, the plot of 4-4 ratio showed lower than that of chemical control.

  • It's crucial to control Alternaria blight and Anthracnose emerging mostly on ginseng leaves during the rainy season to increase the organic ginseng products. The purpose of this study is to investigate the efficay of lime-brodeaux spray on the ginseng leaves and evaluate the growth and yield of the ginseng, and the contents of ginsenoside and 70% ethanol extracts from 3-year-old ginseng variety, Cheonpoong. Lime-bordeaux sprayings were conducted in the ratio of 6-6 in June, 8-8 from July to September every 15 days. After June 10, the spraying have no effects on the growth leaf and stem, and there was no significant increase in chlorophyll contents. The ratio of intact leaf and root were distinctly increased because Alternaria blight and Anthracnose were decreased by spraying lime-bordeaux mixture. Root weight per plant and root yield were increased by 15%, and 62% in 3-year old ginseng, respectively, because the ratio of intact leaf and root were higher by using lime-bordeaux mixture. Furthermore, spraying of lime-bordeaux mixture is prone to increase the ratio of rusty root in ginseng. Spraying of lime-bordeaux mixture decreased both of the contents of ginsenoside and 70% ethanol extract by 13.7%, and 15.2% in 3-year-old ginseng, respectively.

Control Efficacy of Bordeaux Mixture against Pepper Anthracnose (고추 탄저병에 대한 보르도액의 방제 효과)

  • It was conducted to evaluate the control efficacy of Bordeaux mixture on pepper anthracnose in vitro and in vivo. The suppressive efficacy of Bordeaux mixture on mycelial growth and spore germination of Colletotrichum acutatum was investigated on PDA, cellophane membranes and pepper fruits, respectively. Furthermore, its control value was evaluated on detached pepper fruits inoculated with C. acutatum by wound and non-wound inoculation method, and in fields. The mycelial growth of C. acutatum JC24 was inhibited by 90.0% on PDA amended with $937{\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$ of Bordeaux mixture. While the spore germination of C. acutatum JC24 was inhibited perfectly on cellophane membranes treated at $187{\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$ of Bordeaux mixture, that on fruits inoculated with the pathogen by wound inoculation and non-wound inoculation method was inhibited by 88.1% and 91.3%, respectively. Although the control value on fruits treated with $937{\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$ of Bordeaux mixture was 17.6% in wound inoculation method, it was 58.8% in non-wound inoculation method. In fields, when Bordeaux mixture was sprayed five times at 14 day-intervals, it showed 55.7% and 61.7% of control value in 2012 and 2013, respectively. We think Bordeaux mixture was able to use as an eco-friendly organic farming material to control pepper anthracnose based on the above-mentioned results.

Effect of Bordeaux Mixture on Control of Rice Leaf Blast (벼 유기재배에서 석회보르도액을 이용한 벼 잎도열병 방제 효과)

  • Recently organic farming practice of rice has been emerged in Korea, but one of the major limiting factor is the no effective environmental-friendly agro-materials to control major plant diseases. Bordeaux mixture has been used effectively as a preventive agro-chemical. The aim of this study was to investigate efficacy of Bordeanux mixture on control of rice blast caused by Magnaporthe grisea which is one of the disruptive rice diseases in world-wide. In greenhouse experiment, pre-treatment of 6-6 type of Bordeaux mixture before inoculation of spore suspension of M. grasea showed 71 % of control value. In field experiment, preventive applications of 4-8 and 6-6 types of Bordeaux mixture showed over 71 % of the control value. Chemical injury on rice leaves were not found in the application concentrations of all types of Bordeaux mixture, but observed in applications of Bordeaux mixtures between 30 and 100 diluted concentrations. This results indicate Bordeaux mixture can be used as an effective environmental-friendly agro-chemical to control rice blast disease in the field.

The Best Spray Timing for the Control of the Bacterial Shot Hole with Bordeaux mixture (6-6) after Wintering in the Peach Orchard (복숭아 과원에서 월동 후 세균구멍병 방제를 위한 보르도액 최적 살포시기)

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the best spray timing for the control of the bacterial shot hole with Bordeaux mixture (6-6) after wintering in the peach orchard. We sprayed Bordeaux mixture (6-6) on 'Mibaekdo', 'Yumyeong' and 'Cheonhong' of peach verities from late-March to mid-April in 2001, 2002 and 2014, and examined how much bacterial shot hole and chemical injure occurred. The infection rate of bacterial shot hole according to spray time was 10.2 to 11.7% at leaves, and 1.7 to 2.2% at fruits in 2002. And Efficacy of the Bordeaux mixture treatment for control of bacterial shot hole at full blooming time 21.2 to 30.4% at leaves, 1.7 to 4.4% at fruits in 2014. The chemical injure occurred slightly for one week hence. The fruit bearing rate was 20.7 to 29.8% at 'Mibaekdo', and 35.4 to 61.9% at 'Yumyeong' peach trees. When the spray at the time of blooming period by bordeaux mixture was investigated the control effect of bacterial shot hole disease. The infected leaves was better than 21 to 25% twice the quantity of finished products and bordeaux self-preparation about 28 to 30% base quantity of finished products, also the control efficacy was higher in infected fruits trends in bordeaux self-preparation method and twice the quantity of finished products.

  • Limestone is the largest mineral resource in South Korea and is used in various industries, particularly as a primary raw material in the cement and iron industries. However, research on the utilization of limestone in fields such as agriculture, powder, and green chemistry is severely lacking. In this review, studies concerning the crop antibacterial industry using unslaked or slaked lime produced from limestone were analyzed. Reports regarding lime bordeaux mixture were also considered. By compiling research results, processing technologies for improving the antibacterial efficiency of lime bordeaux mixture are discussed. In addition, plans for the revitalization of research on crop antibacterial agents through the limestone processing industry were summarized.

Comparison of Photosynthesis between Treatment and Non-treatment of Lime Bordeaux Mixture in 3 Year Old Root in Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer

  • Korean ginseng has been used for thousands of years as an important medicinal plant. Lime-Bordeaux mixture (LBM) was made with copper sulfate and quicklime, which was sprayed instead of pesticides in ginseng field. Net photosynthesis ($P_N$) was compared between Treatment and Non-treatment of LBM in 3 Year Old Ginseng. $P_N$ in control plot recorded $2.94{\mu}mol\;(CO_2)\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$ at the first day of experiment, which was similar until the last day of experiment. However, The $P_N$ in LBM recorded $2.23{\mu}mol\;(CO_2)\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$, which was lower than that in control plot. As time goes by, The $P_N$ in LBM was gradually increased up to $3.21{\mu}mol\;(CO_2)\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$ and finally, it was similar with that in control plot at 7th day as a $3.20{\mu}mol\;(CO_2)\;m^{-2}s^{-1})$.
