This paper presents the establishment and characterization of a neutron calibration field using a bare $^{252}Cf$ source of low neutron source strength in Vietnam. The characterization of the field in terms of neutron flux spectra and neutron ambient dose equivalent rates were performed by Monte Carlo simulations using the MCNP5 code. The anisotropy effect of the source was also investigated. The neutron ambient dose equivalent rates at three reference distances of 75, 125, and 150 cm from the source were calculated and compared with the measurements using the Aloka TPS-451C neutron survey meters. The discrepancy between the calculated and measured values is found to be about 10%. To separate the scattered and the direct components from the total neutron flux spectra, an in-house shadow cone of 10% borated polyethylene was used. The shielding efficiency of the shadow cone was estimated using the MCNP5 code. The results confirmed that the shielding efficiency of the shadow cone is acceptable.
The microhotplates consisting of a Pt-ased heating element on AlN/poly 3C-SiC layers were fabricated. The microhotplate has a $600{\mu}m{\times}600{\mu}m$ square shaped membrane which made of $1{\mu}m$ thick ploycrystalline 3C-SiC suspended by four legs. 3C-SiC is known for excellent chemical durability, mechanical strength and sustaining of high temperature. The membrane is fabricated by surface micromachining using oxidized Si sacrificial layer. The Pt thin film is used for heating material and resist temperature sensor. The fabrication methodology allows intergration of an array of heating material and resist temperature detector. For reasons of a short response time and a high sensitivity a uniform temperature profile is desired. The dissipation of microhotplate was examined by a IR thermoviewer and the power consumption was measured. Measured and simulated results are compared and analyzed. Thermal characterization of the microhotplates shows that significant reduction in power consumption was achieved using suspended structure.
We formed silver nanocrystallites by the thermal decomposition of a $Ag^{+1}$-oleate complex, which was prepared by a reaction with $AgNO_{3}$ and sodium oleate in a water solution. The resulting monodispersed silver nanocrystallites were produced by controlling the temperature (290$^{\circ}$C). Transmission electron microscopic (TEM) images of the particles showed a 2-dimensional assembly of the particles with a diameter of $9.5{\pm}0.7nm$, demonstrating the uniformity of these nanocrystallites. An energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectrum and X-ray diffraction (XRD) peaks of the nanocrystallites showed the highly crystalline nature of the silver structure. We analyzed the decomposition of the $Ag^{+1}$-oleate complex using a Thermo Gravimetric Analyzer (TGA) and observed the crystallization process using XRD.

Characterization of special nuclear material may be performed using energy spectroscopy of either the neutron or gamma-ray emissions from the sample. Gamma-ray spectroscopy can be performed relatively easily using high-resolution semiconductors such as high-purity germanium. Neutron spectroscopy, by contrast, is a complex inverse problem. Here, results are presented for $^{252}Cf$ and PuBe energy spectra unfolded using a single EJ309 organic scintillator; excellent agreement is observed with the reference spectra. Neutron energy spectroscopy is also possible using a two-plane detector array, whereby time-of-flight kinematics can be used. With this system, energy spectra can also be obtained as a function of position. Spatial-dependent energy spectra are presented for neutron and gamma-ray sources that are in excellent agreement with expectations.
Human genome projects have enabled whole genome mapping and improved our understanding of the genes in humans. However, many unknown genes remain to be functionally characterized. In this study, we characterized human chromosome 4 open reading frame 34 gene (hC4orf34). hC4orf34 was highly conserved from invertebrate to mammalian cells and ubiquitously expressed in the organs of mice, including the heart and brain. Interestingly, hC4orf34 is a novel ER-resident, type I transmembrane protein. Mutant analysis showed that the transmembrane domain (TMD) of hC4orf34 was involved in ER retention. Overall, our results indicate that hC4orf34 is an ER-resident type I transmembrane protein, and might play a role in ER functions including $Ca^{2+}$ homeostasis and ER stress.
Nanometer-sized structures are being applied to many devices including micro/nano electronics, optoelectronics, quantum devices, MEMS/NEMS, biosensors, etc. Especially, the thin film with submicron thickness is a basic structure for fabricating these devices, but its mechanical behaviors are not well understood. The mechanical properties of the thin film are different from those of the bulk structure and are difficult to measure because of its handling inconvenience. Several techniques have been applied to mechanical characterization of the thin film, such as nanoindentation test, micro/nano tensile test, strip bending test, etc. In this study, we focus on the strip bending test because of its high accuracy and moderate specimen preparation efforts, and measure Au thin film, which is a very popular material in micro/nano electronic devices. Au film is deposited on Si substrate by evaporation process, of which thickness is 100nm. Using the strip bending test, we obtain elastic modulus, yield and ultimate tensile strength, and residual stress of Au thin film.
Preparation and properties of Eu(hfa)3·L (Hhfa = hexafluoroacetylacetone, L = bis(2-methoxyethyl)ether, diglyme, and 2, 2':6', 2"-terpyridine, tpy), which are potential CVD precursors for europium, were investigated. The reaction of the Eu2O3 with Hhfa in the presence of tridentate neutral ligand yielded the nine-coordinated Eu(hfa)3·L. Eu(hfa)3·diglyme is air- and moisture-stable and most importantly has good volatility and thermal stability. Eu(hfa)3·tpy shows no sublime intact. The complex Eu(hfa)3·diglyme has been characterized by an X-ray structure determination; monoclinic P21/n, a=10.252(1), b=16.051(6), c=19.392(8) Å, β=96.10(2)°, V=3173(2) Å3. The europium atom in Eu(hfa)3·diglyme adopts a square-antiprismatic geometry with the ninth coordinating oxygen atom capping one of the square faces. All the adducts have been characterized by IR, TGA/DTA.
The present study has been performed to select the osmotic tolerant lines using polyethylene glycol (PEG 6000) through an in vitro and in vivo mutagensis with a gamma-ray. During the screening, we selected three mutant lines that seemed to confer elevated osmotic tolerance in high concentrations of PEG 6000. Fruits of these mutants (Os-HK101, Os-HK102 and Os-HK103) were increased to sugar concentration, L-glutamine acid, vitamin C content and lycopine content than those of the wild type. Also the chlorophyll contents were few decreased more in the three mutant lines than the WT plants. Our results suggest that the Os-HK101 is characterized as osmotic stress tolerance considering the sugar concentration and lycopine content. It is expected that the result of this study can be used for breeding more competitive species with respect to contents in sugar or functional chemicals from the selected osmotic resistant lines.
The study was done to change the morphology and pore size of SBA-15 silica, and the characteristics of SBA-15 silica were investigated with TG-DSC, XRD, SEM, TEM and N2 adsorption-desorption under changing aging conditions. SBA-15 silica having a 2D-hexagonal structure was synthesized and confirmed by SEM and TEM. The structure of mesoporus silica SBA-15 showed a pore having regularly formed hexagonal structure and a passage having a cylindrical shape. This result is in good agreement with the pore forming in XRD and cylindrical shape of the structure in $N_2$ adsorption-desorption isotherm. SBA-15 silica showed a large BET surface area of $603-698\;m^2/g$, a pore volume of $0.673-0.926\;cm^3/g$, a large pore diameter of 5.62-7.42 nm, and a thick pore wall of 3.31-4.37 nm. This result shows that as the aging temperature increases, the BET surface area, pore volume, and pore diameter increase but the pore wall thickness decreases. The BET surface areas in SM-2 and SM-3 are as large as $698\;m^2/g$. However, SM-2 has a large surface area and forms a thick pore wall, when the aging temperature is $100^{\circ}C$ and is synthesized into stable mesoporous SBA-15 silica.
