  • Robotics has emerged as an important field for the future. It is our vision that robots in future will be able to transcend these precincts and work side by side humans for the greater good of mankind. We developed a face robot for this purpose. However, Life like robots demands a certain level of intelligence. Some scientists have proposed an event based learning approach, in which the robot can be taken as a small child and through learning from surrounding entities develops its own personality. In fact some scientists have proposed an entire new personality of the robot itself in which robot can have its own internal states, intentions, beliefs, desires and feelings. Our approach should not only be to develop a robot personality model but also to understand human behavior and incorporate it into the robot model. Human's personality is very complex and rests on many factors like its physical surrounding, its social surrounding, and internal states and beliefs etc. This paper discusses the development of this platform to evaluate this and develop a standard by a society based approach including the cultural paradigm. For this purpose the fuzzy control theory is used. Since the fuzzy theory is very near human analytical thinking it provides a very good platform to develop such a model.

  • This paper describes research on mental commit robot that seeks a different direction from industrial robot, and that is not so rigidly dependent on objective measures such as accuracy and speed. The main goal of this research is to explore a new area in robotics, with an emphasis on human-robot interaction. Mental commit robots provide psychological, physiological, and social effects to human beings through physical interaction. In the previous research, we categorized robots into four categories in terms of appearance. Then, we introduced a cat robot and a seal robot, and evaluated them by interviewing many people. The results showed that physical interaction improved subjective evaluation. Moreover, a priori knowledge of a subject has much influence into subjective interpretation and evaluation of mental commit robot. In this paper, 95 subjects evaluated the seal robot, Paro by questionnaires in an exhibition at the Japan cultural institute in Rome, Italy for 4 days from June 25th to 28th, 2003. This paper reports the results of statistical analysis of evaluation data.

  • The study on social robots has been actively conducted in the robot research community. In the area of robot design, however, there are few studies regarding robot motions that are one of the methods for interaction between humans and robots. This is a preliminary study to find preferred human motions that can be applied to social robots. We conducted a two-phased empirical study about preferred human motions. In the first phase, four representative human motions, such as 'greeting', 'I don't know', 'positive answer', and 'giving', were captured through 28 body makers and video recording. 10 young and 6 elderly Singaporeans participated in the motion capture process. In the second phase, the communication efficiency, emotion, and satisfaction of the human motions recorded in the first phase were measured by a questionnaire and 31 young Koreans, 35 young Singaporeans participated to investigate cultural differences. We drew the conclusion that motions used in the same culture are efficient in communication and also give friendliness and satisfaction. In addition, regardless of user's culture, young people's motions and female motions were preferred in terms of communication efficiency, emotional aspect, satisfaction.

  • Social robots, which are mainly used by individuals, emphasize the importance of human-robot relationships (HRR) more compared to other types of robots. Emotional expression in robots is one of the key factors that imbue HRR with value; emotions are mainly expressed through the face. However, because of cultural and preference differences, the desired robot facial expressions differ subtly depending on the user. It was expected that a robot facial expression customization tool may mitigate such difficulties and consequently improve HRR. To prove this, we created a robot facial expression customization tool and a prototype robot. We implemented a suitable emotion engine for generating robot facial expressions in a dynamic human-robot interaction setting. We conducted experiments and the users agreed that the availability of a customized version of the robot has a more positive effect on HRR than a predefined version of the robot. Moreover, we suggest recommendations for future improvements of the customization process of robot facial expression.

  • As the new industry of this 21centuries, theme park is the important position to the front leader countries as a new growth engine due to its industrial-economical and cultural-social effect. While domestic theme park industries show lower competitive position with global theme park in aspect of management and qualities and have weak brand power. The global situation of present service robot industry of the world is the beginning stage and the time for strengthening competitive position and the best opportunity becoming global leader of world markets by prior occupation through provision of factitious market creating big demand. Robot theme park is possibile to provide such big demand of various robot and this paper present of ideas for robot theme park.

  • Europeans are much more rigid in their thinking on robots and especially have a negative view on robots as peers since they regard robots as labor machines. Recently, Korea invented several educational robots as peer tutors. Therefore, study was needed to determine the difference in cultural acceptability for educational robots between Korea and Europe (Spain). We found that Europe seems to be much more rigid in its thinking on robots and especially has a negative view on educational robots. Korean parents have a strong tendency to see robots as 'the friend of children,' while on the other hand, European parents tend to see educational robots as 'machines or electronics'. Meanwhile, the expectation of children on educational robots showing identification content was higher in Europe than in Korea since European children are familiar with costume parties. This result implied that we may find a Korean market for educational robots earlier than a European market, but European children will be eager to play with educational robots even though their parents have a negative view of them.
