  • Objectives : To discuss the therapeutic properties of Daoyin, and suggest ways to apply the Spleen Daoyin Method clinically. Methods : The therapeutic properties of Daoyin were examined in medical texts, after which the movements and effects of the Spleen Daoyin Method were analyzed. Based on relevant contents in the Donguibogam, symptoms and diseases for application of the Spleen Daoyin Method were studied to suggest further clinical application possibilities. Results & Conclusions : Daoyin manages the body by treating diseases, while keeping the Shen intact to manage the mind. In the case of the Five Zhang Daoyin Method, its therapeutic nature is clear as the target is focused on the Five Zhang. The Spleen Daoyin Method is mostly comprised of two movements that enable overall restoration and improvement of the Spleen function. Therefore, it could be applied in cases of Spleen-Stomach diseases where there is functional damage.

  • The aim of this study was to analyze the differences between Qigong and Daoyin as a therapeutic exercise of traditional Korean medicine. We searched Pubmed and Chinese Academic Journals(CAJ) over time periods from their inception to August 13th, 2013. We analyzed the systematic reviews of Qigong and clinical trials of Daoyin. Total 12 Qigong and 16 Daoyin(11 Baduanjin, 4 Wuqinxi, 1 unspecified type of Daoyin) articles were met our inclusion criteria. As the results of our analyzation, Qigong was dominant in chronic or incurable disease. On the other hand, Daoyin was dominant in internal diseases or functional improving of internal organs. As using "Qi" is in common between Qigong and Daoyin, they have not been differentiated in world of traditional Korean medicine. However, it could be better to use the Qigong and Daoyin according to their effectual difference.

  • This retrospective observational study was aimed to evaluate that Daoyin Exercise therapy improves the symptoms related to lumbar disc herniation. We analyzed the medical records of 7 patients, who satisfied with inclusion and exclusion criteria. The subjects of the study were the patients who were prescribed Daoyin Exercise Therapy and Korean medical treatments for lumbar intervertebral disc herniation at Dunsan Korean Medicine Hospital of Daejeon University from July 25th, 2016 to March 31th, 2017. The effects of Daoyin Exercise Therapy was evaluated by comparing before and after taking Daoyin Exercise Therapy through 0-10 Numeric Rating Scale(NRS), Roland & Morris Disability Questionnaire(RMDQ), Trunk Extension Flexion(TEF) Program, EuroQol five Demension Questionnaire(EQ-5D, EQVAS) of the symptoms including lower back pain. The Daoyin Exercise Therapy combined with Korean medicine treatment reduced NRS($3.357{\pm}3.038$) and RMDQ($9.50{\pm}6.364$), and improved Muscle endurance($44.429{\pm}45.136$), EQ-5D($0.09{\pm}0.12$) and EQVAS($6.571{\pm}19.260$) of the 7 patients without side effects. These results implied that Daoyin Exercise Therapy might helps to improve symptoms of patients with lumbar disc herniation by reducing the symptoms of lower back pain and improving muscle endurance, quality of life, strength enhancement and core muscles.

  • This retrospective study reports the effectiveness of Daoyin exercise therapy in a patient with lower back pain who suffered from idiopathic scoliosis. A patient was treated with Korean medicine containing Daoyin exercise therapy for 4 weeks. The patient was assessed for the numeral rating scale (NRS), Cobb's angle, correctability, and coronal balance. After treatment, the NRS of low back pain decreased from 9 to 1. The Cobb's angle of the thoracic curve decreased from 27.31° to 17.66°. The Cobb's angle of the lumbar curve decreased from 21.86° to 9.05°. Correctabililty was 35.34% in the thoracic curve and 58.60% in the lumbar curve. And coronal balance decreased from positive 32.80 mm to negative 3.20 mm. This study suggests that Daoyin exercise therapy could be effective therapeutic choice for lower back pain with idiopathic scoliosis.

  • A 42-year-old patient with functional dyspepsia had suffered from early satiation and postprandial fullness for 1 year despite Western medicine treatment. We treated her with the Spleen Daoyin method, along with acupuncture, moxibustion, and herbal medicine and scored her symptoms using a 4-point Functional Dyspepsia-related Quality of Life (4p-FD-QoL) questionnaire, the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale (GSRS), and a visual analogue scale (VAS). A 7-day Spleen Daoyin treatment decreased her 4p-FD-QoL score from 61 to 51, with a marked decrease in the emotional part (18 to 10). Her GSRS score did not change, but her bloating score decreased from 3 to 1. Her VAS score decreased from 6.6 to 4.3 for upper abdomen discomfort, but lower abdomen discomfort was unchanged. The patient showed high compliance and satisfaction with exercise therapy and reported no adverse events. Spleen Dayoin may be a useful therapy for functional dyspepsia, especially when accompanied by psychological problems.
