  • In this paper, a reliable control system structured with dual CPU modules and dual I/O modules is implemented as a means of achieving a highly reliable fault tolerant control system. For this, faults in the system modules are first examined, and a fault detection technique consisting of self diagnostic, comparison process, and exception processing is applied. Also reliability analysis is conducted for the discrete time Markov model with dual structure. It is shown quantitatively that the reliability is improved in the control system with dual structure in comparison with a system with single module structure.

  • A spreader pose control system using dual-electric compasses has been implemented by measuring the skew angle of the spreader with dual-electric compasses. In the conventional spreader pose measurement, CCD cameras, laser sensors or tilt sensors are mostly used. However those sensors are not only sensitive to the weather and disturbances but also expensive to build the system. To overcome the shortcomings, an inexpensive and efficient system to control the spreader pose has been implemented using the dual-magnetic compasses. Since the spreader iron-structures are noise sources to the magnetic compass, it is not considered to use the magnetic compass to measure the orientation of the spreader. An algorithm to eliminate the interferences of metal structures to the dual compasses has been developed in this paper. The 10:1 reduction model of a spreader control system is implemented and the control performance is demonstrated to show the effectiveness of the dual-magnetic compasses proposed in this research.

For this, faults in the system modules are first examined, and a fault detection technique consisting of self diagnostic, comparison process, and exception processing is applied. Self diagnostic is used to locate which components in the modules have been failed, while comparison process is to cmpare control outputs computed by both CPU modules and protect the plant from malfunction by blocking failed control outputsin advance. Finally exception processing is used to determine the faults that are not detected immediately by the self diagnostic and comparison process, e.g. bus error processing when acknowledge signal for data transfer is not activeted in the I/O modules. Also reliability analysis is conducted for the discrete time Markov model with dual structure. It is shown quantitatively that the reliability is improved in the control system with dual structure in comparison with a system with single module structure.

  • Control algorithms for a dual source chiller air conditioning system were developed. These are control algorithms for the supply air temperature control, the supply header chilled water temperature control, the chiller chilled water temperature control, and the cooling tower water temperature control. These algorithms were analyzed by using a dynamic simulation program. Simulation results showed the energy savings and the satisfactory controls of an absorption and centrifugal chiller air conditioning system. Therefore, control algorithms developed for this study may effectively be used for the improved controls of the dual source chiller air conditioning system.

  • This paper proposes a dual lifting and its cooperative control system with two different kinds of floating cranes. The Mega-erection and Giga-erection in the ship building are used to handle heavier and wider blocks and modules as ships and off-shore platforms are enlarged. However, there is no equipment to handle such Tera-blocks. In order to overcome the limit on performance of existing floating cranes, the dual lifting is proposed in this research. In the dual lifting, two floating cranes are well-coordinated to add up the lift capabilities of both cranes without any loss such that virtually a single crane is lifting, maneuvering and unloading. Two main constraints for the dual lifting are as follows: First, two barges of floating cranes should be constrained as a rigid body not to cause a relative motion between two barges and main hooks of the two cranes should be controlled as main hooks of a single crane. In order words, it is necessary to develop the cooperative control of two floating cranes in order to sustain a center of gravity of the module and minimize the tilting angle during the lifting and unloading by the two floating cranes. Two floating cranes are handled as a master-slave system. The master crane is able to gather information about all working conditions and make a decision to control the individual hook speed, which communicates the slave crane by TCP/IP. The developed control system has been embedded in the real floating crane systems and the dual lifting has been demonstrated five times at SHI shipyard in 2015. The moving angles of the lifting module are analyzed and verified to be suitable for hoisting control. It is verified that the dual lifting can be applied for many heavier and wider blocks and modules to shorten the construction time of ships and off-shore platforms.

  • An urban railway power substation consists of three thyristor dual converters. Two converters are connected to up and down trolley line to supply the electric energy or feed the regenerative energy back to the distribution. When the two converters break down, the remaining converter is used in an emergency. One thyristor dual converter system (TDCS) manages the energy of two or three railway stations. If the TDCS fails, the trains stop operating. To solve the problem, this paper proposes the three parallel operation control algorithm of thyristor dual converter system using the emergency converter. The broken TDCS can be replaced by the emergency converter in other TDCS. The effectiveness of this proposed control is verified by simulation.

  • The areal recording density of HDD(Hard Disk Drive) has been increasing by about 60% a year. In order to achieve high areal density, less track pitch is expected and more servo bandwidth is required. Dual stage actuator and servo controller for HDD have been suggested for achieving high track density as a possible solution. Dual-loop servo system is generally classified into a two-input-two-output system, but if we use an estimator for a two-input-two-output system, it can be converted into two input one output system. Since we can't control the dual stage servo system by the classical method, it requires a special technique; for example, Parallel Loop System, Master-Slave Loop System, Decoupled Master-Slave Loop System, and Dual Feedback Loop System. In this paper, we performed experimental evaluations of several types of control algorithm. Further experiments will be made in the future.
