This study questionnaires 160 elders with 80 in a large city and 80 in small-to-medium sized city in order to find out the functional independence of elderly people. The results of this study were as follows. 1. Functional independence level following health factor; The comparison of degrees of functional independence level between two groups showed significant difference in sanitation, drinking and smoking, eating habit, chronic disease, physical activities, and regular physical examination(P<.05). But the comparison between two groups was not showed significant difference in present treatment, regular exercise. 2. Functional independence level following Psychological factor; The comparison of degrees of functional independence level between two groups showed significant difference in health evaluation(P<.05). But the comparison between two groups was not showed significant difference in quality of life. In conclusion it is needed that stable housing, much physical activities, and diversified family members should be realized and stable livelihood security recipients to maintain and improve health of the aged and to be socially satisfied.

  • Purpose: The purpose of the study was to compare level of functional independence and its correlates among community-dwelling older adults in rural areas between South Korea and the United Sates. Methods: The study employed a comparative and correlational design. Data were collected from 198 community-dwelling older adults in rural areas (South Korea=100, & US = 98). Functional independence, cognitive function, obesity and general characteristics were measured. Results: From both countries, approximately fifteen percent of older adults living independently had cognitive problems without any treatments. Among Korean older adults functional independence was associated with a number of chronic diseases and aging while in the United States the participants had a negative correlation with obesity and aging. Conclusion: For Korean older adults in rural areas, nurses should focus on monitoring older adults' abilities to manage chronic illness and designing self-management programs while in the United States the focus should be on healthy lifestyle programs about exercise and diet to increase functional independence.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of self-care training based on ICF(International Classification of functioning, Disability and Health) on functional independence in the young children with spastic cerebral palsy. Total of 43 young children(male=25, female=18; age range from 36month to 72month) with spastic cerebral palsy, classified at GMFCS(Gross Motor Function Classification System) levels III-IV. Total of 32sessions of a self-care training (eating, grooming, bathing, toileting) were given 4 times a week for 30minutes from August 1th to September 30th of 2008. Changes in the functional independence after the training obtained by Wee-FIM(Functional Independence Measure for Children). Results were as follows: Functional independence was significantly increased after the training. As a result, a self-care training should be applied as an effective intervention to improve the functional independence in the young children with spastic cerebral palsy.

  • A longitudinal study of self-concept and functional independence in 22 adolescents with progressive muscular dystrophy is reported. 30 adolescents with progressive muscular dystrophy completed Korean Self-Concept Scale, Modified Barthel Index, and a questionnaire examining demographic and medical factors. Functional independence was measured by Modified Barthel Index. Two years later, 22 of the 30 adolescents with progressive muscular dystrophy completed same Korean Self-Concept Scale and Modified Barthel Index. Adolescents with progressive muscular dystrophy were not changed on self -concept scores between test and retest. At retest adolescents with progressive muscular dystrophy scored significantly lower than at test on Modified Barthel Index. Compared to scale norms, subjects had significantly lower Total Self, Physical Self, Social Self, Self Satisfaction, Self Behavior scores. Age, years of education, and functional independence were significantly related self-concept. Functional independence was significantly related years of education.

The data were collected boys(108) and girls(120) second-grade high school students in Jeonbuk area and analyzed Independent-Samples T-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation in use of SPSS WIN 11.5 program. The main results are as follows.: 1, Psychological separation from farther was that girls were higher in attitudinal independence than boys. Psychological separation from mother was that boys were higher in functional, emotional independence than girls. There was no significant differences in depression between boys and girls. 2. In the relation between psychological separation from father and depression, girls showed negative correlation attitude independence and both of boys and girls showed positive correlation in conflictual independence. In the relation between psychological separation from mother and depression, boys showed negative correlation in attitude independence and girls showed negative correlation in functional, attitudinal independence and both of boys and girls showed positive correlation in conflictual independence. 3. Psychological separation from father by the level of depression was related attitudinal, conflictual independence for girls and was related conflictual independence for boys. Psychological separation from mother by the level of depression was related functional, attitudinal, conflictual independence for girls and was related attitudinal, conflictual independence for boys. Finally, the more severe depression was related higher conflict independence from their parents.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of neuromuscular re-eduction program and traditional intervention program. Methods: It is focused on difference between changes of experimental before and after on 30 stroke patient's physical composition, body water and functional independence. Results: The obtained results are as follows ; 1. In the comparison of change in physical composition between the experimental group and control group, the between-subjects factors were not a significant difference. 2. In the comparison of change in body water between the experimental group and control group, the between-subjects factors were not a significant difference. 3. In the comparison of change in functional independence between the experimental group and control group, the between-subjects factors were a significant difference in 8 items and total FIM (p<0.01; p<0.05) but, were not a significant difference in 11 items. Conclusion: the neuromuscular re-eduction program was more effect then traditional intervention program in functional independence but, was not a significant difference in body composition and body water.

  • Purpose: Cognitive function is a main concern for rehabilitation progression in individuals who have sustained brain damage, even among those whose motor function has returned after brain damage. The purpose of this study was to investigate how cognitive impairment relates to functional independence in postural stability and gait performance in patients with chronic hemiparetic stroke. Methods: This was an observational design in an outpatient rehabilitation hospital. Twenty-eight adults with chronic hemiparetic stroke, receiving a course in an outpatient rehabilitation program, participated in this study. They were divided into two groups (i.e., non-cognitive impairment and cognitive impairment groups) via a cut-off score of 23 or less on a mini-mental state examination. Functional independence was assessed with the timed up-and-go test (TUG), 10-meter walk test (10mWT), five times sit-to-stand test (FTSST), Berg balance scale (BBS), and modified Barthel index (MBI). The independent t-test was used for statistical analysis when comparing the two groups. Results: The cognitive impairment group had less functional independence, balance, and gait performance than those of the non-cognitive impairment group had. The former also showed a statistically significant decrease in their TUG score, FTSST score, BBS score, and MBI score compared to the latter, but not in their 10mWT score (p<0.05). Although the non-cognitive impairment group walked faster than the cognitive impairment group did, that difference was not statistically significant (p>0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that cognitive impairment relates to functional independence in postural stability and the activities of daily living. In rehabilitation settings, cognitive impairment would be considered a major component in therapeutic rehabilitation to overcome the patients difficult physical problems and to treat for improving functional independence more after stroke.

  • This study examined influences of mothers' attachment experience and separation-anxious psychological control and of adolescents' attachment on adolescents' psychological independence. Participants were 302 high school students (106 boys; 196 girls) and their mothers. Data were collected via questionnaires. Data analyses were by Pearson's correlation and Hierarchical Multiple Regression. Results showed that 1) Mothers' attachment experience with their mothers was positively related to girls' attachment to their mothers; mothers' separation-anxious psychological control was negatively related to adolescents' attachment. 2) Adolescents' attachment to their mothers predicted their emotional and functional psychological independence negatively. 3) Mothers' psychological control was negatively related to functional independence of boys but positively related to emotional independence of both boys and girls.
