  • In this paper, a method for measuring image pattern widths is proposed using gaussian interpolation, in order to improve inconsistent results coming from the different directions in image patterns. The performance of our method is evaluated using image patterns with 9 directions, and compared with previous methods. It is confirmed that the proposed method gives accurate and consistent width results regardless of pattern directions.

  • We propose effective motion and observation models for the position of a WiFi-equipped smartphone user in large indoor environments. Three component motion models provide better proposal distribution of the pedestrian's motion. Our Gaussian interpolation-based observation model can generate likelihoods at locations for which no calibration data is available. These models being incorporated into the particle filter framework, our WiFi fingerprint-based localization algorithm can track the position of a smartphone user accurately in large indoor environments. Experiments carried with an Android smartphone in a multi-story building illustrate the performance of our WiFi localization algorithm.

  • A new spline function for resampling discrete signal adaptively is proposed. In general, B-spline function is used for an image interpolation because of its smoothness and continuity, but accompanies a large amount of blurring effect. Hence, we developed a new spline function to remedy this effect, with two procedures ; deblurring of Gaussian blurring and diminishing of aliasing effect caused by deblurring procedure. The proposed function has a parametric expression with $\alpha$ which is related to the variance of Gaussian blurring model. Locally adaptive resampling scheme is obtained by changing a according to statistical characteristics of an image. The proposed, interpolation function shows edge-sharpening effect as well as noise smoothing, with comparison to the conventional schemes.

  • Image interpolation, a technology that converts low resolution images into high resolution images, has been widely used in various image processing fields such as CCTV, web-cam, and medical imaging. This technique is based on the fact that the statistical distributions of the white Gaussian noise and the difference between the interpolated image and the original image is similar to each other. The proposed algorithm is composed of three steps. In first, the interpolated image is derived by random image interpolation. In second, we derive weighting functions that are used to apply non-local mean filtering. In the final step, the prediction error is corrected by performing non-local mean filtering by applying the selected weighting function. It can be considered as a post-processing algorithm to further reduce the prediction error after applying an arbitrary image interpolation algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed method yields reasonable performance.

  • ELM, a characteristic line based method, was applied to advection-dispersion equation, and the results obtained were compared with those of Eulerian schemes(Stone-Brian and QUICKEST). The calculation methods consisted of Lagrangian interpolation scheme and cubic spline interpolation scheme for the advection calculation, and the Crank-Nicholson scheme for the dispersion calculation. The results of numerical methods were as follows: (1) for Gaussian hill: ELM, using Lagrangian interpolation scheme, gave the most accurate computational result, ELM, using cubic spline interpolation scheme, and QUICKEST scheme gave numerical damping for Peclet number 50. Stone-Brian scheme gave phase shift introduced in the numerical solution for Peclet number 10 and 50. (2) for advanced front: All schemes gave accurate computational results for Peclet number 1 and 4. ELM, Lagrangian interpolation scheme, and Stone,Brian scheme gave dissipation error and ELM, using cubic spline interpolation scheme, and QUICKEST scheme gave numerical oscillation for Peclet number 50.

  • The Element-free Galerkin Method has become a very popular tool for the simulation of mechanical problems with moving boundaries. The internally applied Moving Least Squares interpolation uses in general Gaussian or cubic weighting functions and has compact support. Due to the approximative character of this interpolation the obtained shape functions do not fulfill the interpolation conditions, which causes additional numerical effort for the application of the boundary conditions. In this paper a new weighting function is presented, which was designed for meshless shape functions to fulfill these essential conditions with very high accuracy without any additional effort. Furthermore this interpolation gives much more stable results for varying size of the influence radius and for strongly distorted nodal arrangements than existing weighting function types.

  • In this paper, a Gaussian interpolation filter and cubic interpolation filter are presented to do more accurate channel estimation compared to the conventional linear interpolation filter for COFDM systems. In addition to an interpolation filter, a low pass filter using FFT and IFFT is also presented to reduce the noisy components of a channel estimate obtained by an interpolation filter. Channel estimates after low-pass filtering combined with interpolation filters can lower the error floor compared to the use of only interpolation filters. Computer simulation demonstrates that the presented channel estimation methods exhibit an improved performance compared to the conventional linear interpolation filter for COFDM systems in time-varying multipath fading channel and0.1 ~ 0.2 dB of Eb/No difference at BER=10-4 when the perfect channel estimation is compared.

  • In this paper, an hybrid automatic focusing method has been proposed for speedy and reliable measurement and inspection in industry. It can improve reliability of focusing position by using not a focusing measure but the hybrid one that is incorporated with sobel operator and auto-correlation. Also, it can not only reduce control time of focusing position using adaptive step size, but also improve accuracy of focusing position by gaussian interpolation. Its performance is verified by experiments. It is expected that it can apply to optical system for measurement and inspection in industry fields.

  • This paper gives channel estimation of W-CDMA reverse link using 2-point second-order algorithm over Rayleigh fading channels. The proposed algorithm is compared with the existing interpolation algorithms, i.e., WMSA, linear and second-order Gaussian interpolation, by obtaining HER performance through computer simulations. The BER performance of 2-point second-order interpolation is superior to other algorithms in fading channels. The proposed algorithm also has relatively-simple structure and similar processing delay in comparison to the existing algorithm, Therefore, this algorithm is more suitable for high speed mobile communication environments.

  • In medical visualization, volume visualization is widely used. Applying 3D images to diagnose requires high resolution and accurately implement visualization techniques are being researched accordingly. However, when a three-dimensional image volume visualization is implemented using volume data, aliasing will occur since using discrete data. Supersampling method, getting lots of samples, is used to reduce artifacts. One of the supersampling methods is Catmull-rom spline. This method calculates accurate interpolation value because it is easy to compute and pass through control points. But, Catmull-rom spline method occurs overshoot or undershoot in large gradient of pixel values. So, interpolated values are different from original signal. In this paper, we propose an adaptive adjusting weights interpolation method using Gaussian function. Proposed method shows that overshoot is reduced on the point has a large gradient and PSNR is higher than other interpolated image results.
