THE EFFECT OF MECHANICAL PROCESSING OF HAY ON THE EATING AND RUMINATION BEHAVIOUR IN SHEEP

  • An experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of change in length of hay offered on eating and rumination behaviour in sheep using three types of hay diets (L: long, M: 8.0-cm cut, S: 1.2-cm cut) and 3 Japanese Corriedale wethers, and the experiment was designed as $3{\times}3$ latine square. The time spent eating per 100 g hay was significantly shorter with long (L) hay (p < 0.05) than with chopped (M and S) hay, and therefore, the eating rate (g D.M./min.) was significantly higher in the former (p < 0.05) than in the latter. Rumination appearance (the lag time after eating) tended to be longer with long hay than with chopped hay, but not significantly (p > 0.05). Daily time spent ruminating, the actual chewing time and daily number of chews tended to be more in feeding long hay than in feeding chopped hay, but not significantly. Daily number of rumination periods was significantly more with long hay (p < 0.01) than with chopped hay. Cyclic rate tended to be longer with long hay than with chopped hay, in particular, the difference in values between long hay and 8.0-cm cut hay was significant statistically (p < 0.01). The rumination index (time spent ruminating/100 g D.M, eaten) tended to be higher with long hay than with chopped hay, and the difference in values between long hay and 1.2-cm cut hay was significant statistically (p < 0.05). Bolus time was significantly longer with long hay (p < 0.01) than that with 8.0-cm cut hay. The circadian pattern of ruminating time was not changed by the changes in length of hay eaten.

국내 주요 화본과 조사료의 영양성분 간 상관관계 (Correlation between Nutrient Components of Grass Roughages Mainly Used in Korea)

  • 본 연구에서는 국내에서 반추가축용 조사료 원으로 많이 사용하고 있는 화본과 수입조사료 6종(bermuda grass hay, klein grass hay, oat hay, orchard grass straw, tall fescue straw and timothy hay)에 대하여 최근 NRC의 nutrient requirements of daily cattle(7th revised edition, 2001)에서 권장하는 사료의 영양성분 분석방법에 따라 일반조성분과 함께 heat-stable $\alpha-amylase$ treated neutral detergent fiber (aNDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), acid detergent lignin(ADL), neutral detergent insoluble crude protein(NDICP)과 acid detergent insoluble crude protein(ADICP) 등의 함량을 분석하고 영양성분간의 Pearson의 상관계수를 산출하였다. 조사료에 따라 다소 차이는 있으나 oat hay는 CP와 NDICP(p<0.05), CP와 ADICP(p<0.01)의 상관관계가 높게 나타났고, orchard grass straw는 CP와 NDICP의 상관관계가 높게 나타났다(p<0.05). Tall fescue straw도 CP와 NDICP의 상관관계가 높게 나타났으며(p<0.01), timothy hay는 CP와 ADICP의 상관관계가 높게 나타났다(p<0.05). Klein grass hay는 CF와 aNDF (p<0.01), oat hay는 CF와 ADF(p<0.05), orchard grass straw는 CF와 ADL(p<0.05), tall fescue straw는 CF와 aNDF(p<0.01), CF와 ADF(p<0.01), timothy hay는 CF와 aNDF(p<0.01), CF와ADF(p<0.05), CF와 ADL(p<0.01)에서 높은 상관관계를 나타내었다. 이렇게 영양성분 간에 상관관계가 높은 성분들 간에는 앞으로 조사료의 영양성분에 영향을 미치는 제 요인들을 고정하여 상관관계를 조사하고, 분석점수를 많이 하여 회귀식을 만들 수 있다면 수입조사료 평가에 실질적인 적용이 가능할 것으로 생각된다.

수입건초의 품질 및 기호성에 관한 연구 (Studies on the Quality and Palatability of Imported Hay and Straw)

  • 본 연구는 2008년 1월부터 12월까지 충남대 학교 농업생명과학대학과 가축유전자원시험장에서 수행하였다. 공시가축은 유산양(Sannen, Capra aegagrus) 12두(female, $30{\pm}1.8kg$), 재래산양(Korean native goats, Capra hircus) 12두(female, $24{\pm}2.4kg$), 꽃사슴(sika deer, Servus nippon) 5두(female, $92{\pm}5.2kg$)를 공시하였다. 공시재료는 2006년에 미국에서 수입된 annual ryegrass straw, perennial ryegrass straw, tall fescue straw 및 Kentucky bluegrass straw 등 4종과, 2007년에 미국에서 수입된 alfalfa hay, bermudagrass hay, timothy hay, klein grass hay, oat hay 및 orchardgrass hay 등 6종 등 총 10종과 대조구로 국내산 혼합 목건초(mixed hay) 등 총 11종을 공시하였으며 얻어진 결과는 다음과 같다. 수입건초는 종류에 따라 화학적 성분과 건물소화율(in vitro digestibility, IVDMD)는 현저한 차이를 보였으며 (p<0.05), alfalfa hay와 orchard-grass hay를 제외하고는 대부분의 수입건초는 대조구에 비하여 조단백질(crude protein, CP)함량과 IVDMD가 낮은 반면에, NDF와 ADF 같은 섬유소물질의 함량은 상당히 높은 결과를 나타내었다. RFV(relative feed value)는 수입건초의 종류에 따라 차이를 보였으며, 대부분의 수입건초의 RFV는 $4{\sim}5$등급에 해당되었다. 유산양, 재래산양 및 꽃사슴에 의한 채식량과 기호성은 수입건초의 종류에 따라 현저한 차이를 나타내었으며, 공통적으로 orchardgrass hay와 bermudagrass hay가 높았던 반면에, Kentucky bluegrass straw, tall fescue straw, annual ryegrass straw 및 perennial ryegrass straw 등은 채식량과 기호성 순위가 상당히 낮은 것으로 밝혀졌다. 이상의 결과로 보아, 공시된 수입건초는 종류에 따라 품질과 기호성이 현저한 차이를 보이고 있어 수입건초의 품질평가에 대한 기준설정이 중요하다고 하겠다.

품종과 보존제의 처리가 춘계수확 연맥의 특성과 사료가치에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Cultivar and Preservative on Characteristics and Quality of Spring Harvested Oat Hay)

  • An experiment was carried out to determine effect of cultivar and preservative on the characteristics and quality of baled oat(Avena sativa L.) hay after 60 days of storage. Ihe main plots consisted of the cultivars such as 'Foothill' and 'Swan', and the subplots consisted of preservatives such as commercial propionic acid(CA), lactic bacteria inoculant(LB) and control(C0). Bale temperature of 'Foothill' oat hay maintained higher than that of 'Swan' oat hay during storage. Bale temperature of oat hay treated with CA remained lowest during the earlier storage period and no significant difference was found among preservatives during the latter storage period. Visual assessment of bale of 'Swan' oat hay was better in the evaluation of mold, odor and color than that of 'Foothill' oat hay after storage. DM content of Foothill oat hay increased markedly than that of 'Swan' oat hay through the storage period. CFU(Colony fodng unit) of total viable micmrganism of oat hay bales was not quite different between preservatives, but that of lactic bacteria of 'Swan' oat hay and 'Foothill' was different by over 16 and lo4, respectively. Total nitrogen content of 'Swan' and 'Foothill' oat hay was 1.45 and 2.22%, respectively(P<0.05) and effect of preservatives on total N content was higher in the order of LB, CA, and CO. THE EFFECT OF PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF HAY DIETS ON PHOSPHORUS METABOLISM IN SHEEP

  • The experiments were carried out to study the effect of physical forms of hay diet on phosphorus metabolism by offering sheep roughage diets containing a low phosphorus content. The sheep were fed coarse hay, short hay or finely ground pelleted hay. The physical forms of hat diet had little effect on the pathway of phosphorus excretion. In all groups, the most of phosphorus was excreted in feces and urinary phosphorus excretion was negligible. Duodenal fluid flow, rumen fluid outflow and estimated salivary flow appeared to be relatively high in sheep fed the coarse hay diet as compared to those in sheep fed the finely ground diet. The amount of phosphorus flow to the duodenum tended to be high in the coarse diet group as compared to those in other two groups. On the other hand, phosphorus concentrations in the duodenal fluid and the rumen fluid were lower in sheep fed the coarse hay diet than those in sheep fed the ground hay. Net intestinal phosphorus absorption tended to be higher in sheep fed the coarse hay than that in sheep fed the ground hay or pelleted hay. However, a negative phosphorus balance was observed in the coarse hay diet group although a positive phosphorus balance was found in other two groups. It was considered that salivary phosphorus secretion was greater than the amount of salivary phosphorus reabsorbed from the intestine, resulting in the negative of phosphorus balance in sheep fed the coarse hay.

Mechanical and Chemical Conditioning Effect on Field Drying Rate and Quality of Grass Hay

  • A field experiment was carried out to determine the effects of mechanical and chemical conditioning at mowing on field drying rate and quality of grass hay in 1996. Mower conditioner and/or chemical drying agent $(K_2CO_3)$ were used at different harvest stages (late boot, heading and bloom stages) for hastening hay-making. After field drying, square bales were made by hay baler, and the visual estimation and nutritive value of hay were evaluated after storing two months. In mower conditioning, the duration of field drying was shortened by 0.5 to 1 day compared with drying agent, and by 1 to 2 days compared with control. The drying matter loss of hay was reduced by late harvest and mechanical conditioning. The visual score (leafiness, green color, odor and softness), and acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), in vitro dry matter digestibllity (IVDMD), and relative feed value (RFV) of hay were improved with mechanical conditioning, but chemical alone had little effect on quality. The quality of hay harvested at bloom stage was much lower than that of hay harvested at late boot and heading stage. In conclusion, mower conditioning can enhance the field drying rate of grass hay, however the drying efficiency of chemical drying agent is very low. Also the effects of chemical/mechanical combined conditioning are very similar compared with mechanical conditioning alone. Harvesting at late boot to heading stage is recommended for the production of high quality hay.

Replacing alfalfa hay with amaranth hay: effects on production performance, rumen fermentation, nutrient digestibility and antioxidant ability in dairy cow

  • Objective: The aim of this research was to explore the effects of dietary substitution of alfalfa hay by amaranth hay on production performance, rumen fermentation, nutrient digestibility, serum biochemical parameters and antioxidant ability in dairy cows. Methods: A total of 45 healthy Holstein cows with same parity and similar milk yield and body weight were randomly divided into 3 groups: control diet without amaranth hay (CON) or 50% and 100% alfalfa hay replaced by an equal amount of amaranth hay (dry matter basis, AH1 and AH2, respectively). All the cows were fed regularly 3 times a day at 06:30, 14:30, and 22:30 and had free access to water. The experiment lasted for 60 d. Results: The dry matter intake of CON and AH1 groups was higher (p<0.05) than that of AH2 group. Compared with AH1 group, the milk yield of AH2 group was reduced (p<0.05). Moreover, dietary substitution of alfalfa hay by amaranth hay increased (p<0.05) milk fat, ammonia nitrogen and acetate concentrations. However, the crude protein digestibility of AH2 group was lower (p<0.05) than that of CON group, while an opposite tendency of serum urea nitrogen was found between two groups. The neutral detergent fiber digestibility of AH1 group was increased (p<0.05) when compared to AH2 group. Amaranth hay treatment increased (p<0.05) the serum concentration of glutathione peroxidase in dairy cows. Compared with CON group, the malonaldehyde activity of AH1 group was decreased (p<0.05). Conclusion: Dietary replacing alfalfa hay with amaranth hay (50% ratio) in dairy cows did not affect production performance but improved their antioxidant ability.

Response of Pancreatic Exocrine Secretion in Sheep Fed Different Type and Amount of Hay

  • Three wethers fitted with silastic catheters for collection of pancreatic juice, and cannulas located in the abomasum and the duodenum were used to investigate the effects of different hay and energy intake on pancreatic exocrine secretion. The wethers were fed Italian ryegrass hay or alfalfa hay at maintenance energy requirement and alfalfa hay ad libitum. High energy intake from alfalfa significantly increased abomasal flow of dry matter and both the concentration and daily secretion of ${\alpha}-amylase $. The high energy intake also tended to increase daily secretion of lipase, trypsin and chymotrypsin through the large volume of pancreatic juice. Compared with Italian ryegrass hay, alfalfa hay at the maintenance decreased abomasal dry matter flow, but increased concentration of ${\alpha}-amylase $ in the pancreatic juice, and tended to increase daily secretion of ${\alpha}-amylase $. The secretion of the other enzymes was not different between the two hays at maintenance intake. These results suggest that the kind of hay could change the concentration of ${\alpha}-amylase $ in the pancreatic juice, and that the intake level of alfalfa hay affects the ${\alpha}-amylase $ concentration and the juice volume secreted from the pancreas.

Growth Performances and Carcass Characteristics of Indigenous Lambs Fed Halophyte Sporobolus virginicus Grass Hay

  • The objective of the present study was to compare feed and water intakes, growth performance and carcasscharacteristics of indigenous lamb fed diets containing various levels of halophyte Sporobolus grass hay. Forty male and female lambs were randomly and equally allotted with 5 lambs of each sex per treatment to four dietary treatment groups, which were initially formulated to have 100, 70, 30 or 0.0% Sporobolus grass hay, as a source of forage replacement for conventional Rhodes grass commonly used in the region. The lambs receiving 0.0% Sporobolus grass hay (100% Rhodes grass hay) served as the control. Feed and water were offered ad libitum. Male lambs were slaughtered at the end of the feeding trials. The average daily feed intake was significantly (p<0.05) higher for the animals fed different levels of Sporobolus grass hay than for the control animals. Feed conversion ratio (FCR), i.e., kg feed/kg BW, was similar in all treatment groups. Although lambs fed the diet with 70% Sporobolus grass hay had heavier carcass weights, the differences were not significant. In conclusion, growth performance or carcass characteristics of fattening indigenous lambs were not influenced by the inclusion of different levels of Sporobolus grass hay in the diet. Because of this, Sporobolus grass hay represents an alternative forage resource for sustaining small ruminant production in the saline coastal and subcoastal areas of the world.

품종 및 반전횟수가 추계수확 연맥건초의 사료가치에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Cultivar and Tedding Frequency on the Quality of Fall Harvest Oat Hay)

  • An experiment was carried out to determine the effect of cultivar and tedding frequency on changes of moisture content of oat(Avena sativa L.) hay during field drying and on quality of baled oat hay after storage. The experimental design was a split-plot with the four oat cultivm such as 'Magnum', 'Cayuse', 'West' and 'Murray' as main plots and the two tedding frequencies such as 1 or 3 times a day as subplots in three replications. Moisture content of fresh cut oat cultivar was higher in the order of 'Magnum', 'Cayuse', 'West', and 'Murray' and the moisture content difference among the cultivm was maintained to the final curing day(P< 0.05). Moisture loss from the oat hay during the last 3 curing days was greater with 3 tedding a day than I tedding a day. Temperature of baled oat hay began to rise critically from the 6th day of storage and wa5 highest in 'Magnum' oat cultivar($45.3^{\circ}C$). Total nitrogen and ADIN contents of late maturing oat hay 'Magnum' and 'Cayuse' were higher than those of early maturing 'Murray' and 'West'. Tedding frequency did not influence total nitrogen and ADIN contents. ADF and NDF contents of early maturing oat hay were higher than those of late maturing oat hay. Relative feed value (RFV) of 'Magnum' oat hay was the highest(l06) and classified as Grade 2 in forage quality standard. Quality grade difference between early and late maturing oat cultivan was only 1 or 2.
