Objective : This experimental study was performed to investigate the effects of Houttuyniae Herba extract on anti-inflammation and anti-oxidation. Methods : The cytotoxicity of Houttuyniae Herba water extract and ethanol extract about viability of Raw 264.7 cell were tested using a colormetric tetrazolium assay(MTT assay). We investigated the inhibitory effects of Houttuyniae Herba water extract and ethanol extract on Propionibactrium acnes using paper disk diffusion method. To investigate the anti-inflammation effects of Houttuyniae Herba water extract and ethanol extract on LPS-induced macrophage Raw 264.7 cell, we used ELISA kit. We evaluated anti-oxidation effects of Houttuyniae Herba water extract and ethanol extract on HaCaT cell by Enzyme recycling method. Results : 1. In Houttuyniae Herba water extract and ethanol extract, cell toxicity depended on the density and wasn't difference between two extracts. 2. Houttuyniae Herba water extract and ethanol extract has not the significant inhibition effect of Propionibactrium acnes. 3. Concentration of 50, $100{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ Houttuyniae Herba water extract inhibited the production of NO in the Raw 264.7 cell stimulated with LPS. 4. All extracts except for $20{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ Houttuyniae Herba water extract showed anti-oxidation effect by decreasing the DPPH radicals. Conclusion : These results indicate that Houttuyniae Herba extract has anti-inflammation and anti-oxidation effects. If further study is performed, the use of Houttuyniae Herba extract will be valuable and benificial in the therapy of Propionibactrium acnes.

Experimental studies were performed to investigate the effect of Houttuyniae herba Aqua-acupuncture on the growth of Melanoma 816 tissue and Mononuclear cell subsets in mice. The results are as follows : 1. In the study of lymphocytes numbers in mice circulating blood, Houttuyniae herba Aqua-acupuncture showed inhibitory effect, but without stastistical significance. 2. In the study of $CD4^+$ T cell percentage in mice circulating blood, Houttuyniae herba Aqua-acupuncture showed inhibitory effect, but without stastistical significance. 3. In the study of $CD8^+$ T cell percentage in mice circulating blood, Houttuyniae herba Aqua-acupuncture showed inhibitory effect, with stastistical significance. 4. in the study of lymphocytes numbers in mice spleen tissue, Houttuyniae herba Aqua-acupuncture showed inhibitory effect, but without stastistical significance. 5. In the study of $CD4^+$ T cell percentage in mice spleen tissue, Houttuyniae herba Aqua-acupuncture showed inhibitory effect, but without stastistical significance. 6. In the study of $CD8^+$ T cell percentage in mice spleen tissue, Houttuyniae herba Aqua-acupuncture showed inhibitory effect, but without stastistical significance. 7. In the measurement of melanoma tissue weight, Houttuyniae herba Aqua-acupuncture showed increasing effect, but without stastistical significance. According to above results, it is concluded that Houttuyniae herba Aqua-acupuncture is effective upon immune responses in Melanoma 816 inoculated mice.

The study was performed to investigate the effect of Houttuyniae herba Aqua- acupuncture on immune responses in irradiated rats. The results are as follows; 1. In the assay of peripheral lymphocytes, Houttuyniae herba aqua-acupuncture showed protective effect on peripheral lymphocytes from irradiation. 2. In the assay of $CD_4\;&\;CD_8$ T lymphocytes, Houttuyniae herba aqua-acupuncture showed pretective effect on $CD_4\;and\;CD_8$ T lymphocytes from irradiation with no stastistical significance. 3. In the assay of spleen lymphocytes, Houttuyniae herba aqua-acupuncture showed pretective effect on lymphocytes from irradiation with stastistical significance. 4. In the assay of spleen $CD_4$ T lymphocytes, Houttuyniae herba aqua-acupuncture showed pretective effect on $CD_4$ T lymphocytes from irradiatian with stastistical significance. 5. In the study of $CD_8$ T lymphocytes, Houttuyniae herba aqua-acupuncture showed pretective effect on $CD_4$ T lymphocytes from irradiation with no stastistical significance These results show that Houttuyniae herba aqua-acupuncture is an effective therapy upon immune deficiency induced by irradiation.

The purpose of this study was to elucidate the effect of Oldenlandiae herba and Houttuyniae cordata on calf diarrhea in farms. We examined the antibacterial and antiviral effect of Oldenlandiae herba and Houttuyniae cordata extracts in vitro. And we divided diarrheal calves into three roups in farm; Oldenlandiae herba administration group(10 calves), Oldenlandiae herba and Houttuyniae cordata administration group(10 calves) and control group(7 calves). We estimated the therapeutic effect of the calf diarrhea by using clinical signs, CBC, AST, BUN, creatinine, and measurement of lymphocyte distribution in whole blood. Oldenlandiae herba and Houttuyniae cordata extracts by ethanol(98%) had antibacterial and antiviral effect. In the condition of diarrhea, the fecal condition of Oldenlandiae herba and Houttuyniae cordata group was relieved more than that of others group during experimental period. PCV and fibrinogen concentrations were high in control group. AST and BUN were within normal range in all groups. Administration of Oldenlandiae herba and Houttuyniae cordata was not toxic to the liver and kidney. And Oldenlandiae herba and Houttuyniae cordata extracts also affected the lymphocytes distribution in blood. From these results, we suggested that administration of Oldenlandiae herba and Houttuyniae cordata should be effective on the dairy calf diarrhea in farms.

Houttuyniae Herba is widely used as a cosmetic for enhancing hair growth, and study on promoting mouse hair growth has also been reported. However, studies on the effects of the Houttuyniae Herba on dermal papilla (DP) cells, which play an important role in hair growth, are not well known. For this reason, we studied the effect of Houttuyniae Herba on DP cells. The strong antioxidant activity of Houttuyniae Herba was confirmed by ABTS assay. In the MTS assay, cell viability was reduced to 94.5% in DP cells by treatment of 2 mg/ml concentration of Houttuyniae Herb and cytotoxicity was not observed at 1 mg/ml concentration. The mRNA expression levels of Bone morphogenetic pretein (BMP6), fibroblast growth factor 7 (FGF7), FGF10, and ${\beta}$-galactosidase genes, which are involved in hair growth cycle and hair loss induction, were measured by quantitative RT-PCR after Houttuyniae Herbtreatment. Houttuyniae Herb did not significantly affect mRNA expression of BMP6, FGF7, FGF10, and ${\beta}$-catenin, which are important factors for regulating the hair cycle, including type 1 $5{\alpha}$-reductase. However, mRNA expression of type 2 $5{\alpha}$-reductase, the major cause of male hair loss, was significantly reduced to 56.1% by treatment of Houttuyniae Herbtreatment. Taken together, these results suggest that the Houttuyniae Herbtreatment can help to treat lair loss through removing free radicals and suppression of the expression level of type 2 $5{\alpha}$-reductase in DP cells.

In the result of investigating traditional chinese medical literatures to understand definite immunopharmacologic effects of drugs for clearing away heat and detoxicating such as Sophorae tonkinensis Radix, Houttuyniae Herba, Smilacis glabrae Rhizoma, Belamcandae Rhizoma, Lasiosphaera seu Calvatia, Paridis Rhizoma, Lobeliae chinensis Herba, we could reach conclusions as follows: 1. Sophorae tonkinensis Radix, Houttuyniae Herba can increase voracity of leukocytes and activities of T cells. 2. Sophorae tonkinensis Radix, Smilacis glabrae Rhizoma can inhibit DTH. 3. Sophorae tonkinensis Radix, Houttuyniae Herba increase activities of B cells in low density but decrease activities of B cells in high density. 4. Sophorae tonkinensis Radix, Houttuyniae Herba, Smilacis glabrae Rhizoma, Belamcandae Rhizoma have anti-inflammatory effects. Studies about drugs for clearing away heat and detoxicating is on. but their range is wide and their effects are numerous. Therefore. we think that more deep and wide researches about them shoud be accomplished.

For the development of antimetastatic agent 41 kinds of crude drugs were used for the evaluation of inhibitory effect of several crude drugs on cell adhesion of pulmonary cancer cells and platelet aggregation. Results were obtained as follows: 1. Water extracts of crude drugs inhibited cell adhesion of A549 to complex extracelluar matrix over 40 % of contol were Houttuyniae Herba, Mylabris, Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, Meliae Cortex, Ferula Resina, Oldenlandiae diffusae Herba at the higher concentration of $10^{-3}g／ml$ while those inhibiting cell adhesion of Bl6-Fo over 40 % of control were $10^{-5}g／ml$ of Houttuyniae Herba, Aurantii Fructus, Lithospermi Radix, Zedoariae Rhizoma. Prunellae Spica, Foeniculi Fructus, Rbei Radix, Scutellariae Radix, Meliae Cortex, Ferula Resina and Oldenlandiae diffusae Herba. 2. MeOH extracts of crude drugs at the concentration of $4{\times}10^{-4}g／ml$ inhibiting cell adhesion of A549 specifically to single extracelluar matrix over 40 % of control were Lithospermi Radix, Agrimoniae Herba, Rhei Radix and Ferula Resina to collagen I, Houttuyniae Herba, Lithospermi Radix, Bupleuri Radix, Salviae miltiorrhizae Radix, Orostachys Herba, Sappan Lignum, Meliae cortex ferula Resina and Coicis Semen to collagen Ⅳ, Mylabris, Agrimoniae Herba to laminin, Houttuyniae Herba and Meliae Cortex to fibronectin. 3. NeOH extracts of crude drugs at the concentration of $4{\times}10^{-4}g／ml$ inhibiting cell adhesion of B16-Fo specifically to single extracelluar matrix over 60 % of control were Lithospermi Radix, Salviae miltiorrhizae Radix, Meliae Cortex and Ferula Resina to collagen I, Lithospermi Radix, Bupleun Radix, Saiviae miltiorrhizae Radix, Ferula Resina and Acanthopanacis Cortex to collagen Ⅳ, Bupleuri Radix, Orostachys Herba to laminin, Houttuyniae Herba to fibronectin. 4. MeOH extracts of crude drugs inhibiting platelet aggregation over 40% of ADP control were at the concentration of $50{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ of Houttuyniae Herba, Angilicae gigantis Radix, Zedoariae Rhizoma. Coicis Semen and $100{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ of Ferula Resina, Orostachys Herba, Salviae miltiorrhizae Radix, Curcumac Radix, Carthami Flos, Lithospermi Radix, Gleditsiae Spina, Sappan Lignum, Acanthopanacis Cortex. These results suggest that several crude drugs including Ferula Resina, Houttuyniae Herba, Lithospermi Radix and Salviae miltiorrhizae Radix chiefly have more possibility to exert antimetastatic activity and require in vivo antimetastatic study.

Acne is a relatively common disorder, especially in the adolescent or 20-30th young people. The condition is characterized by comedones, papules and pustules. Acne has social and psychological influence on the acne patients. But there is no perfect treatment of acne. It is known that Herba Houttuyniae has anti-inflammatory action and anti-bacterial action. Therefore, we studied the effect of 5% Herba Houttuyniae extract solution on the acne. The study was designed to compare the efficacy of 5% Herba Houttuyniae solution on the acne. The study was carried out on two groups-a experimental and a control group- for 4 weeks. Efficacy was determined by investigating counts of non-inflammatory open and closed comedones, and inflammatory papules and pustules once a week. After a experiment self-assessment was checked. As the result of the study, we found that a significant difference was observed in the mean counts and self-assessment of the experimental group. So we concluded that Herba Houttuyniae has a clinical effect on the acne.

In order to prove the antitumor effect of Wekyungtang(WKT) that was originated in Bigeubchunkeumyobang(備急千金要方), Wekyungtang with Houttuyniae Herba(WKT-I) and Wekyungtang with Oldenlandiae diffusae Herba(WKT-II) experimentally, the studies were done, We evaluated the cytotoxic activity against B16- Fo as well as the synergistic effects with anticancer drugs such as cyclophophamide (CPM), cisplatin(CPT) and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) in vitro and measured body weight, survival time, hematological changes, changes of tissues in G57BL／6 implanted with B16-Fo. The results were obtained as follows: 1. In vitro cytotoxic effect against B16-Fo was shown in all groups as compared with control group, but the concentrations showing inhibitory growth rate below 55% of control was recognized in all concentrations of Wekyungtang(WKT) against B16-Fo and also concentration of $10^4$g／ml above in all group with cyclophophamide (CPM), concentration of $10^3$g／ml in Wekyungtang(WKT-l) with cisplatin(CPT) in synergistic effect, 2. In vivo body and tumor weight were significantly suppressed in all groups as compared with control group 3. The number of platelet, WBC, RBC were significantly increased in all groups, platelet aggregation was significantly increased in WKT-I and WKT-II as compared with control group. 4. In changes of tissues heavy infiltration oh cancer was shown in portal vein, pulmonary tissue, vein, peribronchiole, aveoli, while WKT-I was effective in antihepatic metastasis and WKT-II in pulmonary matastasis. From above results it was concluded that wekyungtang(WKT), wekyungtang with Houttuyniae Herba(WKT-I) and wekyungtang with Oldenlandiae diffusae Herba(WKT -II) had antitumor effect, and also wekyungtang combined with Houttuyniae Herba or Oldenlandiae diffusae Herba were more effective than wekyungtang only and also cyclophophamide (CPM), cisplatin(CPT) showed the more synergistic effect which suggests the necessity of continuous study on the mechanism of antitumor action of Houttuyniae Herba or Oldenlandiae diffusae Herba.

In order to investigate the preventive and therapeutic effects of Herba Houttuyniae, experimental studies on the immune response and histological findings were undertaken. The results of these studies were summarized as follows; Delayed type hypersensitivity and rosette formation rate were significantly increased compared with control group. Hemagglutination, hemolysin titer and NK cell activity were variable, not significantly against the control group. When observed on lung tissue recovery; experimental groups were shown to be significantly recovered as compared with the control group. From these results, it is suggested that Houttuyniae Herba promotes immune response and reduces the recovery time of pneumonitis and lung abscess from the histological viewpoint.
