In order to estimate the launch point of a high-speed vehicle, predicting the various characteristics of the vehicle's movement, such as drag and thrust, must be preceded by the estimation. To predict the various parameters regarding the vehicle's characteristics, we build the IMM filter specialized in predicting the parameters of the post-launch phase based on flight dynamics. Then we estimate the launch point of the high-speed vehicle using Inverse Dynamics. In addition, we assume the arbitrary error level of the radar for accuracy of the prediction. We organize multiple-dimensioned IMM structures, and figure out the optimal value of parameters by comparing the various IMM structures. After deriving the optimal value of parameters, we verify the launch point estimation error under certain error level.

This paper presents a method of ballistic missile launch point estimation using phase division least squares. The proposed algorithm employs smoothing to enhance estimation accuracy and generates functions of time for total velocity, flight path angle and heading angle, allowing extrapolation to estimate the launch point. Performance of the proposed algorithm is tested in conjunction with the extended Kalman filter and the Kalman filter.

Threat due to malfunction of space launch vehicles is significant since it is bigger and flights longer range than military missiles or scientific rockets. It is necessary to implement a flight safety system to minimize the possible hazard. Design objective of the tracking filter for the flight safety system is different from conventional tracking filters since estimation reliability is more emphasized than estimation accuracy. In this paper, a fusion tracking filter was implemented for processing multi-sensor data from a space launch vehicle. The filter performance is evaluated by analyzing the error of the estimated position and instantaneous impact point. Also a fault detection algorithm is implemented to guarantee fusion filter's reliability under any sensor failure and verified to maintain stability successfully.
The flight safety system for the satellite launch vehicles is required in order to minimize the risk due to launch vehicle failure. For prompt and reliable decision of flight termination, the flight safety system usually uses multiple sensors to estimate launch vehicle's flight trajectory. In that case, multiple types of observed tracking data makes it difficult to identify the flight termination condition. Therefore, a fusion tracking filter handling the multiple tracking data is necessary for the flight safety system. This research developed a simulation software for generating multiple types of launch vehicle tracking data, and then processed the data with fusion filters.
Malfunction of satellite launch vehicles with high speed and long range can be a major concern for operations. Flight safety system that monitor the trajectory and identify any failure of the launch vehicles. Tracking filters for the flight safety systems are different from common tracking filters since filter reliability is more emphasized than accuracy. Reliable estimation of instantaneous impact points requires reliable velocity estimates as well as reliable position estimates. A fusion filter for a flight safety system was developed with the tracking sensor models for the Korea Satellite Launch Vehicle I. The fusion filter performances were evaluated by analyzing the trajectory and instantaneous impact point estimates.

Recently the reusable launch vehicle is being a major trend in the worldwide space market, because a few commercial companies, especially SpaceX, are trying to cut down the launch price through developing and succeeding the reusable launch vehicles. However, there is still a big controversy about whether in view point of the launch cost which is more favorable between expendable and reusable. Therefore, a study and close examination is required for the launch cost in the early development phase of the reusable launch vehicle. In this study the sensitivity analysis is performed with respect to the major cost parameters which have great effects on the launch cost and price. The standard vehicle of this sensitivity analysis is the expendable vehicle having a payload 20 tons. The cost estimation relationships used in this calculation are referred from the commonly proven cost models such as TRANSCOST. The major cost parameters chosen in this study are as follows: development cost, production cost, refurbishment cost, and maximum reusable number.

Noise map is drawn up under launch environment through analyzing jet noise of guided weapon in this research. This has an important significance in terms of having an opportunity to look at influence of noise which is caused by guided weapon in the surrounding environment. In this paper, the magnitude of jet noise that was measured by using microphone and the result of numerical analysis that was gained by using ENPro which is environment noise prediction program are shown. At this point estimation of noise source was based on ISO 9613. Finally noise map derived from results mentioned above will become useful material when setting safety guide for protecting hearing loss of operator of weapon system in the future.
In this study, the observational arc-length effect on orbit determination (OD) for the Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter (KPLO) in the Earth-Moon Transfer phase was investigated. For the OD, we employed a sequential estimation using the extended Kalman filter and a fixed-point smoother. The mission periods, comprised between the perigee maneuvers (PM) and the lunar orbit insertion (LOI) maneuver in a 3.5 phasing loop of the KPLO, was the primary target. The total period was divided into three phases: launch-PM1, PM1-PM3, and PM3-LOI. The Doppler and range data obtained from three tracking stations [included in the deep space network (DSN) and Korea Deep Space Antenna (KDSA)] were utilized for the OD. Six arc-length cases (24 hrs, 48 hrs, 60 hrs, 3 days, 4 days, and 5 days) were considered for the arc-length effect investigation. In order to evaluate the OD accuracy, we analyzed the position uncertainties, the precision of orbit overlaps, and the position differences between true and estimated trajectories. The maximum performance of 3-day OD approach was observed in the case of stable flight dynamics operations and robust navigation capability. This study provides a guideline for the flight dynamics operations of the KPLO in the trans-lunar phase.

Design of a Pump Jet Propulsor (PJP) was undertaken for an underwater body with axisymmetric configuration using axial/low compressor design techniques supported by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis for performance prediction. Experimental evaluation of the PJP was earned out through experiments in a Wind Tunnel Facility (WTF) using momentum defect principle for propulsive performance prior to proceeding with extensive experimental evaluation in towing tank and cavitation tunnel. Experiments were particularly conducted with respect to Self Propulsion Point (SPP), residual torque and thrust characteristics over a range of vehicle advance ratio in order to ascertain whether sufficient thrust is developed at the design condition with least possible imbalance torque left out due to residual swirl in the slip stream. Pumpjet and body models were developed for the propulsion tests using Aluminum alloy forged material. Tests were conducted from 0 m/s to 30 m/s at four rotational speeds of the PJP. SPP was determined confirming the thrust development capability of PJP. Estimation of residual torque was carried out at SPP corresponding to speeds of 15, 20 and 25 m/s to examine the effectiveness of the stator. Estimation of thrust and residual torque was also carried out at wind speeds 0 and 6 m/s for PJP RPMs corresponding to self propulsion tests to study the propulsion characteristics during the launch of the vehicle m water where advance ratios are close to Zero. These results are essential to assess the thrust performance at very low advance ratios to accelerate the body and to control the body during initial stages. This technique has turned out to be very useful and economical method for quick assessment of overall performance of the propulsor and generation of exhaustive fluid dynamic data to validate CFD techniques employed.

The cartridges used for illuminating a desired point or area are virtually limited in tests and evaluations because of limitations, such as noise during launch, the possibility of fires caused by illuminant charge, and the annual testable quantity. Therefore, to solve these problems, a ground fixed test, which replaces the firing test, or an evaluation method to perform limited tests, can be applied more efficiently. In this paper, the results of an 81mm illuminating cartridge, KM series performed in 2019 were analyzed comprehensively to identify the trends in reliability and quality characteristics and to estimate the shelf life. The shelf life was estimated to be at least 10 years based on the time when the lower confidence level reached 80% at a confidence level of 90%. Considering only major defects, the shelf life can be estimated to be approximately 23 years. On the other hand, the shelf life was estimated to be approximately 11 to 15 years and 25 to 28 years according to the effective illuminating time. Finally, an assessment plan of illuminating cartridges for the mortars was also presented as an improvement plan for an assessment method in the future.
