  • We studied the emission characteristics of white phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PHOLEDs), which were fabricated using a two-wavelength method. To optimize emission characteristics of white PHOLEDs, white PHOLEDs with co-doping and blue/co-doping emitting layer (EML) structures were fabricated using a host-dopant system. The total thickness of light-emitting layer was 25 nm and the dopant of blue and red was FIrpic and $Bt_2Ir(acac)$ in UGH3, respectively. In case of co-doping structure, applying micro lens array film showed efficiency improvement from the current efficiency 78.5 cd/A and power efficiency 40.4 lm/W to the current efficiency 131.1 cd/A and power efficiency 65 lm/W and blue / co-doping structure showed efficiency improvement from the current efficiency 43.8 cd/A and power efficiency 22 lm/W to the current efficiency 69 cd/A and power efficiency 32 lm/W.

  • We propose the Poynting vector analysis of the air mode in a top-emitting organic light-emitting diode (OLED) by combining the transfer matrix method and dipole source term. The spatial profiles of the time-averaged optical power flow of the air mode are calculated inside and outside the multilayer structure of the OLED with respect to the thickness of the semi-transparent top cathode and capping layer (CPL). We elucidate how the micro-cavity effect controlled by the thickness variation of the semi-transparent top cathode or CPL affects the internal optical power and absorption loss inside the OLED multilayer and the external optical power coupled into the air. When the calculated absorption loss and external power obtained by the proposed Poynting vector and currently-used point dipole models are compared, two calculation results are identical, which demonstrates the validity of the two models.

  • Since the introduction of CRT(Cathode Ray Tube) in the 1950s, display technologies have been developed continuously. Flat panel displays such as PDP(Plasma Display Panel) and LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) were commercialized in the late 1990s, and OLED(Organic Light Emitting Diodes) and Micro-LED(Micro-Light Emitting Diodes) are now being developed and are becoming widespread. In the future, we expect to develop ultra-realistic, flexible, embedded sensor displays. Ultra-realistic display can be applied to AR/VR(Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality) devices and spatial light modulators for holography. The sensor-embedded display can be applied to robots; electronic skin; and security devices, including iris recognition sensors, fingerprint recognition sensors, and tactile sensors. AR/VR technology must be developed to meet technical requirements such as viewing angle, resolution, and refresh rate. Holography requires optical modulation technology that can significantly improve resolution, viewing angle, and modulation method to enable wide-view and high-quality hologram stereoscopic images. For electronic skin, stable mass production technology, large-area arrays, and system integration technologies should be developed.

  • ZnO/Ag/ZnO multilayers were fabricated and their optical properties were investigated in terms of the micro-cavity effect in electroluminescent devices based on colloidal quantum dots. The top and bottom ZnO layers were formed by a sol-gel method while the middle Ag layer was deposited by thermal evaporation. After the fabrication of the ZnO/Ag/ZnO structure, the transmittance increased to 74%. When the oxide/metal/oxide multilayers were applied to quantum dot light-emitting diodes, the color purity was enhanced due to the narrower full width at half maximum.

  • This study investigates the optical characteristics of InGaN multiple quantum wells(MQWs) light emitting diodes(LEDs) on planar sapphire substrates(PSSs), nano-sized PSS(NPSS) and micro-sized PSS(MPSS). We obtain the results as the patterning size of the sapphire substrates approach the nanometer scale: The light from the back side of the device increases and the total light extraction becomes larger than the MPSS- and planar-LEDs. The experiment is conducted by Monte Carlo ray-tracing, which is regarded as one of the most suitable ways to simulate light propagation in LEDs. The results show fine consistency between simulation and measurement of the samples with different sized patterned substrates. Notably, light from the back side becomes larger in the NPSS LEDs. We strongly propose that the increase in the light intensity of NPSS LEDs is due to an abnormal optical distribution, which indicates an increase of extraction probability through NPSS.

  • The authors investigated the InGaN/GaN multi-quantum well blue light emitting diodes with the implements of the photonic crystals fabricated at the top surface of p-GaN layer or the bottom interface of n-GaN layer. The top photonic crystals result in the lattice-dependent photoluminescence spectra for the blue light emitting diodes, which have a wavelength of 450nm. However, the bottom photonic crystal shows a big shift of the photoluminescence peak from 444 nm to 504 nm and played as a role of quality enhancement for the crystal growth of GaN thin film. The micro-Raman spectroscopy shows the improved epitaxial quality of GaN thin film.

  • We presented a micro hemi-sphere structure flexible film to improve the external quantum efficiency (EQE) in OLEDs. The micro hemi-sphere flexible film was fabricated with breath figure (BF) method and replica process. At 45 mg/mL of concentration, the size of the hemi-spheres was approximately 6.2 ㎛ were obtained which are the most circular shape. So, it was possible to yield the best performance with an improvement of 33 % in the EQE and the widest viewing angle ranging from 0° to 70°. As a result, the hemi-sphere film's size and distribution seem to play important roles in enhancing the EQE in OLEDs. Furthermore, the flexible hemi-sphere film based on polymeric materials could offer an effective, large-scale, mass-produced product and a simple process and approach to achieve high efficiency in flexible OLEDs.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine optimum condition for the cultivation of Chlorella sp. FC-21 using red light emitting diodes (LED). Specific growth rate and cell concentration were measured for the reactors at the illuminations of different light intensity of red LED. Under the illumination of red LED, specific growth rate increased as light intensity increased but cell concentrations decreased. To determine beneficial effect of aeration to cell cultivation, micro-air bubbles were aerated at 0.7 vvm in the reactor at the illumination of red LED. Two and ten times greater specific growth rate and cell concentration were obtained when aeration was applied. In case of blowing of carbon dioxide, pH of culture medium decreased below to pH 3, which resulted in decreases of cell concentration. From this study, we found that red LED with aeration were the most appropriate light source for the cultivation of Chlorella sp. FC-21.

  • This paper studies a light emitting diode(LED) overlapping method of a head-up display that consists of a digital micro device(DMD) panel and a red, green, blue LED in order to increase the brightness of display system and optical output power. This optimization overlapping method removes a quantization noise which occur due to LED overlapping too excessive and stabilizes the junction temperature of LED. In order to reduce junction temperature of LED, the a correlation between a green duty and LED overlapping ratio is studied. Throughout this study, the brightness of head-up display exhibited high increasement ratio of luminance around 33.3 percent at 39 percent overlapping method.
