  • Purpose: This study was to understand to the nursing theory frame contained in the traditional philosophy and western nursing theory for the theory development fit for Korean people and to identified the strategy for nursing theory development. Method: To perform this study various relevant texts-western, eastern, classical and contemporary were reviewed. Result: The metaparadigm of the nursing in western considers four major factors-Human being, Environment, Health and Nursing. In Korea, the metaparadigm of nursing considers three major factors-Universe, Human being (body, life, health, disease) and Nursing. The key strategy for establishing comprehensive nursing theory which combines both western and eastern is to study the nursing literature based on eastern and western philosophy. Theorists should study the life and culture of the specific nation in order to understand the essence of the thoughts and psychology of the patients and to investigate the phenomena, which will be the foundation of theory development. Conclusion: Western nursing theory must be utilized to provide practical framework for the development of nursing theory, and practical approach is necessary for combining western and eastern theory.

  • Nursing have been caught between the paradigm of medical science with a body part view of a person and the paradigm of medical science with an emphasis on unsurpassable control, rigor, objectivism, and neutrality of value. But it is inappropriate to apply impersonal, objective model of science for the personal unique and gestalt experiences of nursing phenomena. Jean Watson proposed a theory of human caring based on human science paradigm to explain human phenomena. This study reviewed the theory of nursing by Jean Watson and the researches based on Waton's theory. In this study the researcher examined the philosophical back ground, value system and key concepts of Watson's theory Watson's perspective of person and human existence includes humanistic and phenomenological characteristics. She also emphasized nurse-patient relationship as an intersubjective(transpersonal) caring relationship. Examination of the studies based on Watson's theory consistantly revealed Watson's theory of human caring based on the human science paradigm is more appropriate than traditional medical science paradigm for explaining nursing phenomena. For the purpose of refining the theory and promoting usefulness of the theory, it would be desirable to test the theory to the nursing phenomena and to apply the theory to practice and education.

  • Despite the new wave of diverse philosophical thoughts in nursing, the criteria for theory evaluation rarely incorporate the new thoughts in its realm. Especially, feminist thoughts, which have contributed to the development of nursing knowledge through incorporating diversities and complexities of nursing phenomenon and reflecting social, cultural, and historical contexts surrounding nursing encounters, were rarely incorporated into the evaluation criteria. In this paper, a feminist approach to theory evaluation is proposed based on a critical analysis of the existing evaluation criteria. First, a historical review of feminist thoughts is provided, and feminist principles across diverse groups of thinking within feminism are discussed. Then, theory evaluation criteria are historically analyzed and critiqued while considering the feminist principles. The critical points found in the currently available theory evaluation criteria include: (a) the evaluation criteria are based on objectivity, (b) they are ignoring gender differences; (c) cultural differences tend not to be seriously considered; and (d) contexts surrounding nursing phenomenon are rarely considered. Based on the critical points, four additional components for theory evaluation are proposed. The components are: (a) respect for subjectivity; (b) historical and sociopolitical contextual considerations; (c) gender sensitivity; (d) cultural competence; and (e) blueprint for action.

  • This literature review was undertaken to explore theoretical models of depression for their potential usefulness in nursing research and practice. Depression has bean accounted for by numerous theories or models of causation ; 11 theories selected from psychology, medicine and psychoanalysis and supported by empirical or experimental research were reviewed. These theories identify a variety of precipitating and predisposing factors that may affect the individual's depression. Aggression - turned - inward theory, object loss theory, ego functioning theory, personality organization theory, behavioral theory, learned helplessness theory, cognitive theory, genetic factors, and biological theories conceptualize predisposing factors. Only life stressors theory identifies precipitating facotrs. Each of these theories contributes to an understanding of depression, but many of them use overlapping and interrelated factors. It is also evident from recent. research that there are multiple causes for depression involving an interactive effect among predisposing and precipitating factors that are both biological and psychological in origin. That is, a single theory is not useful, but perhaps a unified theory could be developed that would be helpful to nursing. This review points to the need for continuing development and testing of theories that would integrate the multiple conceptualizations of depression.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to introduce and elucidate changes in Strauss and Corbin's grounded theory and discuss its application to the field of nursing in South Korea. Methods: The changes in grounded theory by Strauss and Corbin were examined through a literature review of grounded theory from its inception. Results: Strauss and Corbin acknowledged their philosophical backgrounds of symbolic interactionism and pragmatism; however, their methodology based on positivism overwhelmed their epistemology and ontology. This inconsistency has been represented by the coding paradigm and the premise of "emergent from the data." In the revised version of Basics, Strauss and Corbin modified their theory to weaken the coding paradigm and strengthen the strategies for the development of substantive theory. Conclusion: Strauss and Corbin's revised grounded theory did not fully address the inconsistency of their epistemology and ontology between their acknowledgement and methodology. However, these changes constitute a meaningful step toward resolving inconsistencies and highlight the development of substantive theory. This has implications for Korean nursing researchers who have utilized methodologies in grounded theory with dogmatic approaches; grounded theory, with its evolving nature, is not a finalized method and calls for open approaches for the development of a grounded theory that fits Korean nursing.

  • Purpose: This study examined the trends in domestic research that applied theory to diabetes patients to suggest future directions of nursing practice and research for diabetes patients. Methods: This scoping review followed the Joanna Briggs Institute guidance. The population was diabetes patients; the concept was a research that applied theory and had no limitations in context. Eligible studies were retrieved from electronic databases of RISS, KMbase, KoreaMed, NDSL, NAL, and nine major domestic nursing journals. Of the 509 retrieved articles, 20 studies met the inclusion criteria. Results: The study included the community (57.1%), and the subjects were mainly type 2 diabetes patients (42.9%). The Information-Motivation-Behavior skills (IMB) model was the most applied theory (36.4%). The theories were primarily from psychology disciplines (72.7%) and predominantly applied as a conceptual framework of the study (55%). Conclusion: The studies that applied theory were conducted mainly in the community. The IMB model was the most applied theory, and the theory was most applied as the conceptual framework. Efforts to close the theory-practice gap and further studies on developing nursing interventions based on theory and verifying their effectiveness are needed to improve nursing practice and study for diabetic patients.

  • Purpose: This study presents the findings of various research on human intelligence and Multiple Intelligence Theory and suggested the implications of Multiple Intelligence Theory-based approach to the nursing education for the ill children. Method: Research objectives were accomplished by conducting a literature review. The main areas of the literature review included the Multiple Intelligence Theory, and it's application case for the children with learning disorder. Results: Dissatisfaction with traditional IQ tests has led to the development of a number of alternative theories, all of which suggest that intelligence is the result of a number of independent abilities that uniquely contribute to human performance. Among them, Multiple Intelligences Theory led to break intelligence down into at least eight different components: logical, linguistic, spatial, musical, kinesthetic, naturalist, intra-personal and interpersonal intelligences. In addition, Multiple Intelligence Theory and it's application case believes that every topic can be effectively taught and achieved using six entry points framework. Conclusions: The educational implications of Multiple Intelligence Theory in view of the health education and education in the children's hospital school should be considered for the ill children2's better education in a hospital setting.
