  • Objectives: In this paper, two cases which showed the meaningful results on the patients' chief complaints were analyzed. The patients were treated with the Mahwang-Haengin-Gamcho-seokgo-tang herbal medication based on Shanghanlun disease pattern identification diagnostic system. Methods: The patients were diagnosed based on Shanghanlun, disease pattern identification diagnostic system. In case 1, the change of menstruation cycle was noted and pre-menstrual discomforts were measured with Menstrual Distress Questionnaire(MDQ). In case 2, Quality of life questionnaire for adult Korean asthmatics (QLQAKA) was used to estimate the quality of the patient's life. Results: All the symptoms were improved after the Mahwang-Haengin-Gamcho-seokgotang treatment. In case 1, the menstruation cycle decreased to 30 days average. MDQ score decreased 143 to 103. In case 2, the change of the QLQAKA score as 1.647 average point is considered as a meaningful improvement. Conclusion: With great difference to a 'Symptom-Medicine' diagnostic system, the disease pattern identification diagnostic system seeks the pathologic pattern through the patient's whole life. More studies and multiple cases based on the diagnostic system are needed to prove this possibility later.

Effects of Gamijinhae-tang and Socheongryong-tang-ga-seokgo on PMA- induced Production of Airway Mucin and Expression of Airway MUC5AC Gene (가미진해탕(加味鎭咳湯)과 소청룡탕가석고(小靑龍湯加石膏)가 PMA로 유발된 기도뮤신의 생성 및 MUC5AC gene 발현에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives : In this study, the author tried to examine whether Gamijinhae-tang and Socheongryong-tang-ga-seokgo significantly affect both PMA-induced mucin production and MUC5AC gene expression from airway epithelial cells. Materials and Methods : Confluent NCI-H292 cells were pretreated for 30 min in the presence of JHT and STS and treated with PMA (10ng/ml), to assess the effects of the agents on PMA-induced mucin production by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Also, the effects of the agents on PMA-induced MUC5AC gene expression from the same cells were investigated. Possible cytotoxicities of the agent were assessed by examining the rate of survival and proliferation of NCI-H292 cells after treatment of agents during 48 hrs. Results : (1) JHT and STS did not show significant cytotoxicity to NCI-H292 cells. (2) JHT significantly decreased PMA-induced mucin production from NCI-H292 cells. However. STS did not affect mucin production. (3) JHT significantly inhibit the expression levels of PMA-induced MUC5AC gene in NCI-H292 cells. STS slightly decreased the expression levels of PMA-induced MUC5AC gene. Conclusion : These results suggest that JHT can not only affect the production of mucin but also affect the expression of the mucin gene, and this explains the traditional use of JHT in oriental medicine. The effects of JHT and STS with their components should be further investigated using animal experimental models that simulate pathophysiology of airway diseases through future studies.

  • We designed to investigate the relationship the cold-hot theory of herbology and body temperature in experimental model. we prepared four kinds of oriental medicine, which consisted of two cold herbs, Daehwang and Seokgo, and two hot herbs, Buja and Padu. Decrease of body temperature by cold exposure for 12 hour was not inhibited by four herbs oral administration for two weeks. Thermogenesis in mammals is an essential physiological function to maintain the body temperature. Mitochondrial uncoupling proteins(UCPs), which have a potential to generate heat by uncoupling oxidative phosphorylation, apper to play a crucial role in thermogenesis. Therefore UCP is commonly recognized as a key molecule in metabolic thermogenesis and its dysfunction contributes to the development of obesity. In these experiments, Daehwang water extracts inhibited the UCP1 mRNA expression increase by cold exposure in brown adipose tissue. But other herbs did not significantly influence on UCPs mRNA expression in white adipose tissue and seleus muscle tissue. Based on this experiment, we will try to clarify the effects of Daehwang water extracts on UCP1 expression and function.

  • From ancient times to Ching Dynasty, we studied the causes and oriental prescriptions of purpura for 23 oriental medical records. The results were obtained as follows ; 1. Purpura is a disease that raises the purplish speckle or speckle mass on the skin by blood overflowing between flesh and skin and belongs to speckle occurrence(Balban, 發斑) or blood symptom(Hyeoljeong, 血證). 2. At ancient times, purpura named Balban(發斑), Banjin(斑疹), Yin-yang dok(陰陽毒), Podoyeok(葡萄疫) and Bansa etc. 3. In oriental carse of purpura, Insufficient symptoms are gastric energy insufficiency and groundless frame, and Sufficient symptoms are heat-evil in stomach, blood heat, season's improper energy, yin-evil height and wind-heat with phlegm. 4. At oriental prescriptions on purpura, Insufficient symptom used Hwabantang(化斑湯) mostly, the next Hyunsam-seugmatang(玄蔘升麻湯), Jojungtang(調中湯), Seogakcheongdaeeum(犀角靑黛飮), Heuknowhan(黑奴丸) and Sufficient symptom used Jojungikgitang(調中益氣湯), Wibitang(胃脾湯), Daegeonjungtang(大建中湯), Hwanggi-geonjungtang etc. much. 5. The medicines for external use for purpura were Mil(蜜), Seungma(升麻t), Mangcho-jeodamjeup(芒硝猪膽汁), Geongal(乾葛), Seontae(蟬退), Chongbaek and Gangjeup(薑汁) etc., pregnant woman used jeongjeoni(井底泥). 6. The order of medicines were Seungma(升麻), Hwanggi, Insam(人蔘), Seokgo(石膏), Seogak(犀角), Hyunsam(玄蔘) and Chija(梔子) ect.
