1. Objectives: This research was proposed to reinterpret "Soeumin Bumron(少陰人 泛論)"through development of Soeumin exterior disease in Sasang Constitutional Medicine(SCM). 2. Methods: We chronically compared the conceptions, symptoms, mechanisms and treatments of Soeumin exterior disease from "Donguisusebowon-GabObon(東醫壽世保元甲午本)"(DGO) to " "Donguisusebowon-ShinChukbon(東醫壽世保元辛丑本)"(DSC) 3. Results and Conclusions: (1) The classification standard of Soeumin exterior disease was different in DGO and DSC. (2) Soeumin exterior disease classified Taeyang Disease(太陽病), Yangmyoung Disease(陽明病) in DGO and Ulkwang-syndrome(鬱狂證), Mangyang-syndrome(亡陽證) in DSC. (3) Based on the changes of understanding about Soeumin exterior disease from DGO to DSC, we attempted to reinterpret "Soeumin Bumron(少陰人 泛論)" in view of DSC. In view of DSC, the classification standard of Soeumin exterior disease focused on Warm Yang Qi(陽煖之氣), Healthy energy(保命之主) of Soeumin.

Objectives : This study reports a case of Soeumin patients with Herpes zostersMethods : We examined progress of Soeumin Herpes zoster patient's symptoms (skin blisters, pain, insomnia, etc.) and complications when during and after the treatments.Results : Soeumin Herpes zoster patient was diagnosed as Yang Depletion. Yongdamsagan-tang, Sweet BV, were effective for decrease the patient's skin blisters and pain. Soeumin Bojungikgi-tang prevented the patient's aftereffects.Conclusions : Soeumin Herpes zoster patient who had severe pain, blisters, and sleep disorder, was expected high risk of postherpetic neuralgia. But diagnosed Yang Depletion symptomatology and treated with Soeumin Bojungikgi-tang, patient recover completely without sequelae.

Objective : This study was undertaken for discovering the characteristics of sleep in ordinary symptoms based on the Sasang Constitution. The result of this study could be helpful to understand and to identify patients such as Taeumin, Soyangin Soeumin or Taeyangin. Methods : There were 1,229 patients (529 men), who answered the questionnaire about their ordinary sleeping patterns. They were diagnosed, including their clinical Sasang Constitution, by the Sasang Constitution specialist at Bundang Oriental Hospital of Dongguk University. By applying the multinomial and binary logistic regression analysis to those collected materials, we can measure the characteristics and the influence of ordinary sleeping patterns to the dependent variable (Sasang Constitution). Results : In order of the item's influence that had decided one's constitution, between Taeumin and Soeumin, Taeumin snored frequently or well more than Soeumin, Soeumin had more dreams and more sleeping times than Taeumin, and Taeumin struggled frequently or well more than Soeumin. Between Soyangin and Soeumin, Soeumin dreams more frequently than Soyangin, Soyangin snored frequently or well more than Soeumin, and Soeumin has more sleeping times than Taeumin. Between Taeumin and Soyangin, Taeumin snored frequently or well more than Soyangin. Between Taeyangin and a group of the other constitutions, Taeyangin felt unwell after sleeping more than the other constitutions, the other constitutions awaked frequently more than Taeyangin during sleeping. Conclusion : This study will be used for identifying patients as Taeumin, Soyangin, Soeumin or Taeyangin by contrast with each other.

Objectives The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of Soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang, which is based on the Sasang constitutional medicine, for the patient who has suffered from Urinary Disturbance. Methods A 29 year-old woman who suffered from Urinary Disturbance but had no significant organic lesion, was enrolled in this study. The patient had the symptoms including urinary incontinence, pollakiuria, painful urination, discomfort after urinating, general body weakness, chilling sign, and abdominal pain. We diagnosed her as Soeumin Yang Depletion pattern and treated with Soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang. Results After 12 days of admission treatment with Soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang, remarkable improvement was seen on her total number of urination and the Qualiveen Questionnaire score. Conclusions This clinical case indicates that Soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang is effective in treatment of a Soeumin Mang-yang Syndrome, including Urinary Disturbance.

1. Objective : The purpose of this study is to understand the origin, changes and composition of Soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang. 2. Methods : 1) Analyzed the context of the progressive transformation of soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang in related passages from "Donguibogam (東醫寶鑑)", "Donguisusebowon Chobongwon (東醫壽世保元 草本卷)", "Donguisusebowon Gabobon (東醫壽世保元 甲午 本)", "Donguisusebowon Sinchukbon (東醫壽世保元 辛丑本)", "Dongmuyugo (東武遺稿)" 2) Examined the differences between the utilization of Soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang in pre-existing manuscripts according to pathological pattern and more specifically at a pathological stage. 3) Analyzed the total primary effect of the herbs as a prescriptive category, as well as the herbal properties of each component. 3. Results and Conclusions : 1) Originally Dongwon's Bojungikgi-tang was prescribed as a stomach & spleen organ tonifying medicine so it was easily applied and established as a prescription appropriate for Soeumin constitutional types with a weaker spleen organ. 2) From Gabobon(甲午本), Soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang was modified, excluding Bupleurum falcatum(柴胡), Cimicifuga heracleifolia (升麻) and substituting Teucrium chamaedrys(藿香), Ophiopogon japonicus(蘇葉) which are herbs appropriate for the Soeumin constitutional type. 3) In the Gabobon(甲午本), the Gegi-tang which has yang raising properties is included in the Soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang. In Sinchukbon(辛丑本), the Gegi-tang of the Soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang in the Gabobon was excluded and the Gegi-tang mutated into Hwangigyeji-tang. 4) In the Gabobon(甲午本), as the Soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang was prescribed for Soeumin disease regardless of favorable-unfavorable patterns and mild-severe patterns, the stage of the disease when to prescribe Soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang was not clarified. 5) As of the Sinchukbon(辛丑本) edition, as Soeumin's prescriptions have been obvious, the soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang was applied to Mang-yang disease with Hwangigyeji-tang and Seungyangikki-tang 6) As of the Sinchukbon(辛丑本) edition, the Soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang has been applied to parients having both exterior-heat Mang-yang disease and Greater-yin disease, at the same time. 7) As of the Sinchukbon(辛丑本) edition, finally, the Soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang formula has been established as gathering Qi and middle tonification with Panax ginseng(人蔘), Astragalus membranaceus(黃芪), keeping the spleen healthy with Artractylodes japonica(白朮), keeping the spleen strong with Angelica acutiloba(當歸), rooting the spleen with Citrus reticulata(陳皮), raising Yang and middle jiao with Teucrium chamaedrys(藿香), Ophiopogon japonicus(蘇葉), middle tonification with Glycyrrhiza glabra(甘草灸), Zingiber officinale(生薑), Zizyphus jujuba(大棗).

1. Objectives : This research was proposed to find our the pathology of Soeumin in Sasang Constitutional Medicine(SCM). 2. Methods : The related contents of the pathology of Soeumin were selected in Je-Ma Lee's literatures such as "Dongmu-YuGo(東武遺稿)"(DYG), "Donguisusebowon-SaSangchobongyun(東醫壽世保元四象草本卷)"(DSS), "Donguisusebowon-GabObon(東醫壽世保元甲午本)"(DGO), "Donguisusebowon-ShinChukbon(東醫壽世保元辛丑本)"(DSC), and the research was written in order to find out the physiology and pathology of Soeumin in SCM. 3. Results and Conclusions : The chronical change of pathologic concept in Soeumin diseases as follows: Pathology in Soeumin diseases was much Cold Qi(寒氣), and more descending Qi, less ascending Qi in DYG, DSS. In "Discourse on the viscera and bowels" of DGO and DSC, Soeumin has a circulation of Water-Food Hot Qi of Spleen Group(脾黨) and Water-Food Cold Qi of Kidney Group(腎黨). Exterior Disease(表病) was the injury of Exterior-Qi such as eye-shoulder Qi(目膂氣) by Pleasure-Nature-Qi(樂性氣), and Interior Disease(裏病) was the injury of Interior-Qi such as spleen-stomach Qi(脾胃氣) by Joy-Emotion-Qi(喜情氣). All diseases of Soeumin are caused by insufficient Warm Yang Qi(陽煖之氣) in Spleen Group(脾黨), so the pathology of Soeumin was focused on Requisite energy(保命之主) and each small viscera and bowels(偏小之臟). In this viewpoint, the schema of Soeumin diseases such as Ulkwang-syndrome(鬱狂證), Mangyang-syndrome(亡陽證), Taeum-syndrome(太陰證) and Soeum-syndrome(少陰證) were designed to explain the mechanism of each syndrome.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to give account of effects of the Korean herbal medicine therapy which is based on the Sasang constitutional medicine for the patient who has suffered from scale of back caused by psoriasis. Method : Psoriasis patient was diagnosed Soeumin based on his nature and emotion, physical characteristics, symptoms. He was medicated Soeumin Goepungsan. Results and Conclusions : Psoriasis patient who was treated with Soeumin Goepoong-san showed improvement in Psoriasis symptom and general condition. This case study describes the effectiveness on psoriasis symptom by using Soeumin Goepoong-san.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to assess the effect of Taegeuk acupuncture on reducing mental stress by analyzing heart rate variability in Soeumin. Methods : Six Soeumin-diagnosed men participated in this study. They were randomly divided into group A and group B. Each participant went through 4 sessions every week with 1 week of washout period in between each session. HRV was measured three times at every session; at baseline, after administering mentally stressful circumstances and after applying Soeumin Taegeuk acupuncture or Soyangin Taegeuk acupuncture. This study was designed as a crossover clinical trial. Group A participants were treated with two sets of Soeumin Taegeuk and Soyangin Taegeuk acupuncture treatment in respective order (i.e. Soeumin Taegeuk - Soyangin Taegeuk - Soeumin Taegeuk - Soyangin Taegeuk acupuncture treatment). Group B participants were treated with reverse-ordered acupuncture treatment (i.e. Soyangin Taegeuk - Soeumin Taegeuk - Soyangin Taegeuk - Soeumin Taegeuk acupuncture treatment ). Bayesian analysis was performed by using WinBUGS(Ver. 1.4.3) for comparison between Soeumin Taegeuk acupuncture and Soyangin Taegeuk acupuncture. Results : Overall, Soeumin Taegeuk acupuncture tends to reduce LF/HF ratio, LF, HF, LF(Norm) and increase HF(Norm) more than Soyangin Taegeuk acupuncture, but the difference was not statistically significant. In one participant, however, Soeumin Taegeuk acupuncture reduced LF/HF ratio, LF(Norm) and increased HF(Norm) more than Soyangin Taegeuk acupuncture, and the difference was stastatistically significant. Conclusions : This study suggests that Soeumin Taegeuk acupuncture might be an effective means of stabilizing mental stress-induced imbalance of autonomic nervous system for Soeumin.

1. Objectives pneumonia is the infection of the lungs. The typical symptoms of is cough, sputum, fever, chest pain, infiltration of chest X-ray. We have tried researching effect of herbal medicine Soeumin Doksampalmulkeunja-tang(獨蔘八物君子湯). 2. Methods This patient with serious fever, sputum which were caused by aspiration pneumonia was treated by Doksampalmulkeunja-tang(獨蔘八物君子湯), who was diagnosed as Soeumin 3. Results Doksampalmulkeunja-tang(獨蔘八物君子湯) is effective against the fever. sputum symptom of Soeumin. The chest PA test were improved. 4. Conclusions The consitutional treatment with herb-medicine may have effect on fever symptom of Soeumin. Soeumin Exterior febrile Disease must be treated by raising the stagnant yang qi. Further study on Soeumin Exterior febrile Disease is needed.

Purposes : As the population of old people has increased by the improvement of medical techniques, the concern on degenerative diseases has increased gradually. Especially the researches of osteoporosis have been carried out in view of prevention and treatment. But there wasn't any research related with Sasang Constitution. So we investigated the relation between Sasang Constitution and BMD(bone mineral density). Methods : Authors measured BMD and BMI(body mass index) of healthy women. We devided our subjects into Young age group and Old age group, and analyzed the data of Sasang Constitution subgroup. Results : 1. BMD of Taeumin was higher than those of Soyangin and Soeumin in Lumbar spine and Femoral neck in both Young and Old age group. In Old age group, there were significant differences in Taeumin vs Soeumin, and Soyangin vs Soeumin in BMD of Lumbar spine 2. BMI of Taeumin was higher than those of Soyangin and Soeumin in both Young and Old age group. In Young age group, there were significant differences in Taeumin vs Soyangin and Taeumin vs Soeumin. In Old age group, there were significant differences in Taeumin vs Soyangin, Taeumin vs Soeumin and Soyangin vs Soeumin. Conclusion : BMD and BMI of Taeumin was higher than those of Soyangin and Soeumin.
