  • The present study aims to reveal the sweating reaction of male adults, focused on athletes. With six subjects (3 athletes and 3 non-athletes) in two different conditions of ambient temperature (I : $25\pm1.0^{\circ}C$, II : $29.5\pm1.0^{\circ}C$), their total sweat rate, local sweat rate, skin temperature, physiological reaction (rectal temperature, blood pressure, and pulse rate), and psychological reaction (thermal, moisture, comfort, and perceptive sweat sensations) were measured. The comparison gave the following results: Total sweating rate was greater in non-athletes, while the two groups had more perspiration in ambience II. Local sweating rate in both ambiences was the greatest in the central breast area (athletes) and the infrascapular area (non-athletes). The mean skin temperature had more changes of increase and decrease in athletes. As to physiological reaction, non-athletes had lower rectal temperature and blood pressure as well as higher pulse rate. As for psychological reaction in Ambience II, the 4 sensations were mostly 'hot', 'humid', 'uncomfortable', and 'sweaty'.

The effect of acupuncture treated by tonification and sedation manipulation at LI4 and KI7 on lacking of sweating in cold environment(I) (합곡(合谷) 복류(復溜) 보사(補瀉) 시술(施術)이 소한(少汗)에 미치는 영향(影響)(I))

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of the tonification & sedation manipulation for LI4 and KI7 on lacking of sweating in cold environment. Methods: The participants were divided into 3 groups as intact group without acupuncture, acupuncture group inserting and twisting with LI4 tonificaton and KI7 sedation method(LI4-tonify KI7-purge) and acupuncture group inserting and twisting with LI4 sedation and KI7 tonificaton method(LI4-purge KI7-tonify). We obtained baseline data at cold condition with the temperature $14{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. After making the participant staying in cold condition for 10 minute, we measured sweating rate in skin surface, body temperature, oxygen saturation, pulse rate, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, deoxy-Hb and oxy-Hb in subcutaneous. Results : After acupuncture in cold environment, the sweating rate in skin surface significantly decreased in KI7-purge LI4-tonify group comparing the intact groups. The body temperature significantly increased in LI4-tonify KI7-purge and LI4-purge KI7-tonify groups comparing the intact group. The oxygen saturation significantly increased in LI4-tonify KI7-purge group comparing the intact group. Conclusions : These findings indicated that LI4 tonificaton and KI7 sedation method(LI4-tonify KI7-purge) could be effective for production of sweating in cold condition.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to exam the effectiveness of acupuncture using the tonification & sedation manipulation for LI4(Hegu) and KI7(Fuliu) which was known to promote sweating for lack sweating and inhibit for excessive sweating. Methods : The subject of this study was 60 people who agreed with participating. The participants were divided into 6 groups as control group without acupuncture, acupuncture group with needle inserted perpendicularly at LI4, KI7 without manipulation(AT-A), acupuncture group with needle inserted and twisted at LI4 using sedation technique and KI7 using tonificaton technique(AT-B), acupuncture group with needle inserted and twisted at LI4 using tonificaton technique and KI7 using sedation technique(AT-C), acupuncture group with needle inserted and twisted at LI4 and KI7 using tonificaton technique(AT-D) and acupuncture group with needle inserted and twisted at LI4 and KI7 using sedation technique(AT-E). We obtained baseline data at a stable condition with the temperature of $25^{\circ}C$. After having the participant stay at $40^{\circ}C$ for 10 minute and treated with acupuncture for 10 minute, we measured the parameters such as sweating rate, water content in subcutaneous, water content in skin surface, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, pulse rate, oxygen saturation and body temperature. Results : After the tonification & sedation manipulation at LI4 and KI7, the sweating rate was significantly decreased in AT-B, AT-D and AT-E groups. The water contents in skin surface was significantly decreased in AT-B and AT-E groups. The water contents in subcutaneous was significantly decreased in AT-B, AT-C, AT-D and AT-E groups. However, there were no significant changes in systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, pulse rate, oxygen saturation and body temperature. Conclusions : Acupuncture at LI4 and KI7 is effective in controling sweating, and the effect varies according to the tonification & sedation manipulation technique.

  • This paper is studied on the efficient purification process of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from the melt layer crystallization combining crystallization process, sweating process and distillation recovery process. Purity and yield of DMC crystal depended mainly on the crystallization temperature, cooling rate, sweating termperature sweating rate. Through the optimization of crystallization and sweating operation, DMC crystal can be upgraded to very high purity over 99.9% and high yield over 85%.

Differential Effects of Cotton and Polyester Ensembles on Changes in Clothing Surface Temperature, Skin Temperature and Skin Blood Flow During Heat Load

  • The effects of individual sweating rates on thermophysiological responses during the decrease phase of clothing surface temperature (Tcs) with cotton (C) and polyester (P) clothed subjects were examined. Seven women subjects were exposed in a climatic chamber at ambient temperature of $27.2^{\circ}C$, relative humidity of 50%, and their lower-legs were immersed in a water bath at a temperature of $35-41^{\circ}C$ for 70 min. During water immersion, Tcs in C-clothed subject rose immediately after the onset of sweating and then Tcs fell gradually. In C-clothed subjects, Tcs decreased directly (p<0.05) in proportion to total sweating rate (TSR), however no significant correlation was observed in P-clothed subjects. The relationship between TSR and changes in mean skin temperature, and skin blood flow showed negative correlation when wearing C-clothing (p<0.05), however, no significant correlation when wearing P-clothing. Individual TSR was correlated with threshold rectal temperature for sweating onset (p<0.05) with C- and P-clothed subjects. The results showed that individual TSR had significant effects on not only Tcs but also on thermoregulatory responses during the Tcs decrease phase.

Effects of Individual Sweating Response on Changes in Skin Blood Flow and Temperature Induced by Heat of Sorption Wearing Cotton Ensemble

  • We examined the effect of individual sweating responses on thermoregulatory responses induced by heat of sorption, immediately after the onset of sweating. The present study consists of two experiments. In experiment 1, made of 100% cotton (C) and 100% polyester (P) clothing were exposed in the chamber at ambient temperature (Ta) of $27.2^{\circ}C$ and relative humidity (rh) raised from 50% to 95% at five different increase rates of environmental vapor pressure (VP). The increase rate of clothing surface temperature (Tcs), peak Tcs and peak time showed significant correlation with the increase rate of environmental VP in C-clothing (p<0.05). In experiment 2, seven female subjects were studied during leg water immersion ($35-41^{\circ}C$) for 70min in Ta of 27.2 and 50%rh. There were significant positive correlations in the increase rate of clothing microclimate VP vs. changes in Tcs, skin blood flow, mean skin temperature and mean body temperature (p<0.05). The present results showed that individual clothing microclimate VP had significant effects on thermoregulatory responses induced by heat of sorption wearing C ensembles.

Analysis of the Treatment for the 21 Cases of Menopausal Sweating Patients Hospitalized in a Korean Medicine Hospital (갱년기 발한과다를 호소하며 일개 한방병원에 입원한 환자 21명에 대한 치료 분석)

  • Objectives: Hot flush and sweating is the most of common symptoms and the main cause of treatment in Menopause. This study aims to report the therapeutic effect of Korean medicine for menopausal sweating by analysis for the patients hospitalized in a Korean Medicine Hospital. Methods: To analyze treatment of menopausal sweating, we studied 21 patients complaining of menopausal sweating hospitalized in Kyung Hee University Hospital at Gangdong from 1st January 2015 to 31th May 2020 with retrospective chart review. Results: All 21 subjects are treated by acupuncture, moxibustion and cupping therapy during hospitalization for an average of 11.3±9.14 days. The most common used korean herbal medicine was Gwibi-tang-gagambang, Soyo-san-gagambang, and Dangwiyukhwang-tang-gagambang, every 6 case (20%), followed by Ojeok-san with 2 cases (6.7%). The improvement rate averaged 56.4% for daytime sweating and 53.6% for night sweating. Conclusions: The results suggest that menopausal sweating could improve by treatment of korean medicine, confirming significant treatment effects.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of wearing sweat suit on sweating rate during jogging. 4 healthy female students served as subjects in the experimental chamber which was controlled 22$\pm$1$^{\circ}C$, 60$\pm$10%RH and no wind. The experimental clothes were Sweat Suit (SS) and General Suit (GE), SS was the product of R sports wear company which was consisted of long-sleeved jumper (100% polyester) and full length trousers (100% polyester) and GE were consisted of long sleeved shirt (100% cotton) and full length trousers (100% cotton). The subject wore same socks and shoes in both experimental clothes SS and GE. The subject reported at the experimental chamber at the same time on each experimental day. exchanged their clothes to the experimental clothes SS or GE, wore all sensors for the physiological measurements and had a rest in a sitting posture about 40 minutes. After rest, the subject carried out 30 min jogging on the tread mill with the speed 3.6miles/hour and during the jogging rectal temperature, skin temperatures (7 sites of the skin surface), heart rate, VO2, and evaporative weight loss were measured continuously and compared between two experimental clothes SS and GE. The major findings were as follows : The increase in rectal temperature during 30 min jogging was higher in experimental clothes SS than in GE and mean slim temperature kept higher in SS than in GE. VO2 and heart rate were a little bit higher in the later period of jogging in SS than in GE. The evaporative weight loss was greater in SS than in GE. These results indicate that the thermophysiological responses and sweating rate differs according to the wearing suit even though the subject performed same exercise.

The Analysis of the Sweating Rate, Skin Temperature on the Upper Body and Subjective Sensations (상반신의 부분별 발한량, 피부온과 주관적 감각 고찰)

  • This study aimed to measure the amount of sweating on 12 parts of the upper body using absorption fabric and analyze subjective sensations. The study was conducted with 9 male subjects in climate chamber controled at $30{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$, and $55{\pm}5%$ RH. The result was that sweating amount of the upper back part was significantly more than upper front part. We assumed that forced convection flow cased by exercise decreased the sweating rate in the front. The skin temperature of upper front body rapidly decreased as soon as exercise starts and gradually increased with cessation of exercise. On the other hand, the skin temperature of palm increased with exercise and showed continuous increasing even exercise stopping all the experimental period. This is caused by thermoregulatory responses through vasodilatation on the peripheral area. Subjective sensations, such as thermal sensation, wet sensation, and thermal comfort showed the highest score at the time of exercise stop. This means the subjects felt more hot, wet, and uncomfortable after exercise stopped. Bur after wiping of sweat, subjective sensation scores were recovered rapidly. The present study has provided more detailed information on the upper body sweat distribution than previously available, which can be used in clothing design, thermo-physiological modeling, and thermal manikin design. We also think that results of the present study will play an important role in making the sweat distribution map.

Sweating Rates and Thermoregulation in Male and Female Bali Cattle

  • An experiment has been conducted to compare the sweating rate between male and female Bali cattle under tropical conditions in Bali, Indonesia with dry bulb (DB) temperatures varying from 25 to $34.5^{\circ}C$ and relative humidity (RH) 70 to 98%. Rectal temperature (Tr) was significantly different (p < 0.05) between males and females (39.7 vs $39.4^{\circ}C$ compared to 39.2 vs $38.8^{\circ}C$ on weeks 1 and 8 respectively). There were significant effects on RR associated with both $week{\times}sex$ (p < 0.01) and $sex{\times}time$ (p < 0.01) interactions, with values for males higher than females. Skin temperature (Ts) differed significantly between sexes (p <0.05), weeks (p < 0.05) and times (p < 0.01); being lower in females (36 vs $36.4^{\circ}C$). With prolonged working, there were marked increase in RR were recorded after 30 minutes (the overall increase was $12.4^{\circ}C$). Sweating rate (SR) differed significantly between sexes (p < 0.05), weeks (p < 0.01) and times (p < 0.01) during exercise. Females had a lower mean SR ($225.3g/m^2/h$) than males ($238.8g/m^2/h$). With increasing time, the highest SR was achieved after 30 minutes of exercise of $313.3g/m^2/h$.
