A Study on How the Discourse on the Constitutional Symptoms and Diseases in "Donguisusebowon" Influenced the Formation of the Theory of Eight Constitution ("동의수세보원(東醫壽世保元)"의 병증론이 8체질론(體質論)의 형성에 미친 영향에 대한 고찰(考察))

  • 1. Purpose Lee Je-Ma had continued to revise "Donguisusebowon" by adding the contents of the Symptomatic-pharmacology(病證藥理論) on Soeumin, Soyangin and Taeeumin to it from the first establishment of the old version in 1894 to 1900.(new version). This paper tries to find out the contents and meaning of the Discourse on the Constitutional Symptoms and Diseases(病證論) between the old version and new version and what the Discourse on the Constitutional Symptoms and Diseases affected the Theory of Eight Constitution created in subsequent years. 2. Methods I classified the Discourse on the Constitutional Symptoms and Diseases in "DongYiSuseBowon" into old version and new version and tried to find out the Theory of Eight morbidities(8病證論) which is the predecessor of the Theory of Eight Constitution, before reviewing their relation. 3. Conclusions 1) The Discourse on the Constitutional Symptoms and Diseases in the old version specify that the externally sensed diseases are caused by the deep sediment of nature(性) and that the internally touched diseases are caused by the violent activities of emotion(情). In addition, it said that all diseases are caused by the specific characteristics of patient's smaller internal organs(偏小之臟). But in new version, the diseases were understood through the concept Exterior, Interior, Heat and cold(表裏寒熱). The new version said that the diseases may be caused not only the specific characteristics of patient's smaller organs but also by bigger organs(偏大之臟). 2) The Theory of Eight Constitution was derived from the Theory of Eight morbidities, in which all kinds of human diseases are caused by 8 disease-orgin organ and that the diseases therefore can be classified into 8 morbidities. The Theory of Eight morbidities reorganized the Discourse on the Constitutional Symptoms and Diseases in "DongYiSuseBowon" by classifying them into first morbidity and second morbidity. 3) The Discourse on the Constitutional Symptoms and Diseases in "DongYiSuseBowon" has decisively affected the creation of the Theory of Eight morbidities which is the predecessor of the Theory of Eight Constitution. The Theory of Eight morbidities may be deemed another interpretation of the Discourse on the Constitutional Symptoms and Diseases in "DongYiSuseBowon". As the Theory of Eight morbidities put emphasis on the genetic characteristics, the Theory of Eight Constitution stating that Eight morbidities are caused by different specific constitution was derived.

  • This paper was written in order to understand each constitutional symptoms and diseases with two aspects. The first was to trace the courses to accomplish constitutional symptoms and diseases from that of oriented medicine through "Dongyi Bogam" and the original writing such as "Shanghanlun". The second was to analyze the constitutional diseases with Lee Je-ma's own recognition on human being and the society which was based on the "Dongyi Suse Bowon". The original concepts of 'The Interior Disease' and 'The Exterior Disease' were based on the Nature and the Emotion, the Environmental Frames and the Human Affairs, the Ears Eyes Nose Mouth and the Lung Spleen Liver Kidney. The exterior disease were caused by the abilities of ears to listen, eyes to see, nose to smell, and mouth to taste on the environmental frames which were related one's recognition to society. The interior diseases were caused by the abilities of lung to study, spleen to ask, liver to think, kidney to judge on human affairs which were related the relationship between me and others. So the titles of constitutional diseases were named by these views on his first writing of "Dongyi Suse Bowon" in 1894. So the titles of Taeyangin diseases, 'The lumbar Vertebae Disease Induced by Exopathogen' and 'The Small Intestine Disease Induced by Endopathogen' were still remained as the first writing. But the titles of constitutional diseases were rewritten such as present titles in 1900. In order to express pathology and mechanism of constitutional diseases exactly, he rewrote titles which contained the manifestation sites of diseases, and the symptoms of febrile and cold, and the different congenital formations of organs. The exterior diseases and interior diseases had three characteristics. The first was that the exterior disease injured by the nature which had a tendency to progress slowly and the interior disease injured by the emotion which had a tendency to progress rapidly. The second was not that the interior disease and the exterior disease were separated, but that one influenced the other and these were revealed as a disease together when the diseases continued for a long time. The third was that even though the disease caught together it was included the beginning disease. The symptoms in ordinary times was the origin and clue to recognize the constitutional symptoms and diseases. It enabled to establish the constitutional medicine which treated by different ways according to constitution. It had two characteristics which were different from the Traditional Chinese Medicine in appearance of diseases. The first was that the disease was progressed to the next step from the symptoms in ordinary times. The second was that each constitution had different symptoms which were due to symptoms in ordinary times under the same disease, The third was the manifestation of disease were different from symptoms in ordinary times in the same constitution. But the most important thing was that Lee Je-ma recognized these symptoms in ordinary times as four categories and he presented constitutional symptoms and constitutional disease. The four categories were the method to recognize the human being and the diseases for him As the symptoms and diseases of Sasang Constitutional Medicine were compared to Traditional Chinese Medicine, the constitutional diseases of "Dongyi Suse Bowon" could be classified into two groups. The first group was the unique diseases and symptoms, which were not in the Traditional Chinese Medicine, and which were established by the Lee Je-ma. These contained the diseases of taeyangin, the exterior disease of taeumin, the exterior disease of soyangin. The second group used the unique methods to treat disease, which were not in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and which were established by Lee Je-ma. This contained the interior disease of taeumin, the delirium diseases from the MangYin of soyangin, the treatment to help the Yang-Qi ascend and to supplement the ql In the exterior disease of soeumin. Especially, the diseases of taeyangin and taeumin which were caused by the metabolism disorders of Qi-Yack(氣液) were the great achievement to establish constitutional symptoms and diseases. The discourse of taeyangin diseases presented his original thought to recognize the symptoms and diseases through the Shin Gi Hyul Jeong(神氣血精) and the Qi-Yack, the discourse of taeumin diseases presented the disperse of Qi-Yack through the forward and backward of sweat, the discourse of soyangin disease presented the sweat of hand and feet which was manifested that yin-qi of spleen descended to yin qi of kidney, and the bowel movement which was manifested that yang qi of large intestine ascend to head, face and four extremities, the discourse of soeumin disease presented the Jueyin syndrome without the abdominal pain and diarrhea as the exterior disease and made importance to the nervous mind And the classification of exterior diseases and interior diseases were not due to the pharmacology but due to the symptoms and diseases according to the constitution.

  • The purpose of this article was to compare 'The Discourse on the Constitutional Symptoms and Disease' of ${\ulcorner}$Dongyi Soose Bowon${\lrcorner}$ written in 1894(Old Edition(舊本)) with that of ${\ulcorner}$Dongyi Soose Bowon${\lrcorner}$ published in 1901(In Edition(印本)), and to find the idea of pathologic mechanism and classification of 'the Exterior and Interior disease'. the conclusions were as follows. 1. The classification of constitutional symptoms and disease of Soeumin and Soyangin in 'Old Edition(舊本)' was almost equal to that in 'In Edition(印本)' 2. In pathological mechanism of constitutional symptoms and disease of Soeumin and Soyangin, 'The Exterior Disease' could be explained as the disease resulted from fight between 'Yang-chi(陽氣)(Hot-chi(熱氣))'of 'Thoracic vertebrae' and 'Yin-chi(陰氣)(Cold-chi(寒氣))' of 'Bladder' and 'The Interior Disease' between 'Hot-chi(熱氣)(Stomach-chi(胄氣))' of 'Stomach' and 'Cold-chi(寒氣)' of 'Large intestine'. 3. 'The Exterior Symptoms and Disease of the Exterior and the Interior Disease(表裏之表病)' could be explained as the disease occurring at the Branch portion(large portion)(標) by overcoming of Pathogenic factors but Vital energy still sufficient, and 'The Interior Symptoms and Disease of the Exterior and the Interior Disease(表裏之裏病)' occurring at Root portion(small portion)(裏) by invasion of Pathogenic factors and Vital energy almost exhausted. 4. In the classification of constitutional symptoms and disease of Taeumin, 'The Exterior Symptoms and Disease of the Exterior and the Interior Disease(表裏之表病)' in 'Old Edition(舊本)' were rearranged to 'The Exterior Disease' in 'In Edition(印本)', 'The Interior Symptoms and Disease of the Exterior and the Interior Disease(表裏之裏病)' to 'The Interior Disease'. 5. It was assumed that 'The Exterior and the Interior Disease' of Taeumin could be explained in relation between the exterior and e interior, based on the Healthy energy(保命之主) and e concept of the Branch and the Root portion

  • ${\ulcorner}$Hamsansachon Dongyi Suse Bowon Gabogubon${\lrcorner}$ , discovered in 2000, can give very precious information in order to study the formation and development process of ${\ulcorner}$Dongyi Suse Bowon${\lrcorner}$ ${\ulcorner}$The Dircourse on the Constitutional Symptoms and Disease${\lrcorner}$ . I examined, by comparison, changes in understanding pathology explained in ${\ulcorner}$Dongyi Suse Bowon${\lrcorner}$ ${\ulcorner}$The Discourse on the Constitutional Symptoms and Disease${\lrcorner}$ of Gabobon and Sinchukbon, and consequently tried to define the concept of Dispositional Symptom(Dispositional disease) as below, in a point of view that ‘Dispositional Symptom(Dispositional disease)’ should be the key word in explaining the changes in understanding of pathology. Dispositional Symptom(dispositional disease) is a new concept that was first troduced in the Kyongjabon, not found in the Gabobon, and that played a key role in editing ${\ulcorner}$Dongyi Suse Bowon${\lrcorner}$ ${\ulcorner}$The Discourse on the Constitutional Symptom and Disease${\lrcorner}$ . Dispositional Symptom(dispositional disease) means an innate temperament or a pathological tendency, which is already constructed in the system of an individual, prior to expression of specific diseases and symptoms, and can be a primary basis to tell the susceptibility and developing pattern of a certain disease, to decide how to treat and forecast the prognosis. Sinchukbon inductively categorized symptoms of the dispositional symptom (dispositional disease) into the concept of ‘Eight principles’, or eight standards of diagnosis, such as superficies-interior, cold-heat, and weakness-strength.

Background and Purpose At the year of 2000, the society of sasang constitutional medicine acqired ${\ulcorner}$HamsanSachon DongyiSuseBowon GoboGubon${\lrcorner}$ which is presumed as the copy of ${\ulcorner}$GoboGubon${\lrcorner}$. According to Lee Sung-Su who is the great-grandson of DongMu's older brother, $[\ulcorner}$HamsanSachon DongyiSuseBowon GoboGubon${\lrcorner}$ was worked by Lee Jin-Yoon who is the grandson of DongMu's older brother and it was copied by Han Min-Gab and now is owned by Lee Sung-Su who is the son of Lee Jin-Yoon. 2. Method This paper was written in order to understand the character of the discourse on the constitutional symp toms and diseases of ${\ulcorner}$HamsanSachon DongyiSuseBowon GoboGubon${\lrcorner}$. 3. Result and Conclusion 1) Each constitutional symptoms and diseases is classed as that of exterior and interior and then classsed again as that of exterior's exterior, exterior's interior, interior's exterior and interior's interior. 2) The degree of completion is high at the chapter of Soeumin and Soyangin comparing with that of Taeeumin and Taeyangin which don't exist as the contrasted explanation. 3) Soeumin's exterior-disease is divided Taiyang(太陽) and Yangmyung(陽明)'s disease by the sweating, that's interior-disease is same to Sinchukbon(辛丑本).   • Objective The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation between the Cold-damage Six-meridian disease of Qibo (岐伯六經病證) and Sasang Constitutional Symptomatology (四象體質病證), presented in Discourse on the Origin of Eastern Medicine (醫源論) of Longevity and Life Preservation in Eastern Medicine (Donguisusebowon, 東醫壽世保元). Method The process of development from Cold-damage Six-meridian disease of Qibo (岐伯六經病證) to Six Meridians Physical Symptoms and Medicines (六經形證用藥) in the chapter Cold(寒門) of the Treasure Mirror of Eastern Medicine (Donguibogam, 東醫寶鑑) was investigated. And the correlation between Six Meridians Physical Symptoms and Medicines (六經形證用藥) and Sasang Constitutional Symptomatology (四象體質病證) was considered. Results and Conclusions 1. The Cold-damage Six-meridian disease of Qibo (岐伯六經病證) in the chapter Heat Treatise (熱論篇) of Basic Questions (素問) had evolved into Six Meridians Physical Symptoms and Medicines (六經形證用藥) in the chapter Cold(寒門) of the Treasure Mirror of Eastern Medicine (Donguibogam, 東醫寶鑑) through Book for Life Saving (Huorenshu, 活人書), a work of Zhu Gong (朱肱), Six Books on Cold Damage disease (Shanghanliushu, 傷寒六書), a work of Tao Hua (陶華) and Introduction to Medicine (YixueRumen, 醫學入門), a work of Li Chan (李梴). 2. The correlation between the Cold-damage Six-meridian disease of Qibo (岐伯六經病證) and Sasang Constitutional Symptomatology (四象體質病證) can be analyzed and understood through Six Meridians Physical Symptoms and Medicines (六經形證用藥) in the chapter Cold(寒門) of the Treasure Mirror of Eastern Medicine (Donguibogam, 東醫寶鑑). 3.   • 1. Objectives This paper was written in order ro understand the conception on YangQi and YinQi in Sasang Constitutional Medicine. Specially that were focused on the discourse of the symptoms and diseases. 2. Methods We analysis YangQi and YinQi in Gabobon(甲午本) and Sinchukbon(辛丑本) of ${\ulcorner}$Dongyi Suse Bowon${\lrcorner}$ 3. Results and Conclusions The symptomatic-pharmacology of Soeunin and Soyangin was base on the master of reserving life(保命之主). YangQi is ascending Qi and YinQi is descending Qi. that conception is Qi of the large and small organ. And that is appeared hot or cold Qi in body. The influential competition of YinYang is focused on primordial Qi(正氣) of small organ in Gabobon. And focused on small organ's the primordial Qi of the exterior disease and large that of the interior disease in Sinchukbon. YangQi is divided to physiological that and patholgical that at the discourse on the Soyangin’s interior disease in the Sinchukbon. Because YinQi is in proportion to physiological YangQi and inverse proportion to pathological YangQi, physiological that is similar to weak and strong of YinQi that is the master of reserving life. So ascending Yang of Soyangin is more correct as ascending physiological that. YinQi is not divided to physiologica that and patholgical that at the discourse on the Soeumin's interior disease in the Sinchukbon like Soyangin's that. But there is more reasonable that divid physiological YinQi and patholgical that. So descending Yin of Soeumin is more correct as descending physiological that.

  • 1. Objectives This paper was written in order to understand the formative process of Soeumin pharmacology. 2. Methods Souemin pharmacology was analysed with pathology and new prescription in Gabobon(甲午本) and Sinchukbon(辛丑本) of ${\ulcorner}$Dongyi Suse Bowon${\Ircorner}$. 3. Results and Conclusions Soeumin is charactrized to much output of kidney and a little input of speen in sight of ingestive food(水穀). So deficiency of YangQi is a peculiarity of pathology and ascending-Qi is a basic pharmacology. The pharmacology in the exterior disease of Soeumin is built up to base on the old prescription of previous text in Gabobon. Ascending-Yang is the basic pharmacology of Sinchukbon and prescription is summarized to base on the Kyuji-tang. So new prescriptin of Chungoongkyuji-tang and Hwangkikyuji-tang is made by combine Kyuji-tang with Koongkihyangso-san and Bojoongikki-tang. The pharmacology in the interior disease of Soeumin is built up to devide to the weakness of Stomach-Qi, dyspepsia and invasion of cold-Qi. Descending Yin is the basic pharmacology of Sinchukbon and prescription is summarized to base on the Yijoong-tang. Sokunjoong-tang's pharmacology of abdominal pain is newly added and applided to Baekhaoyijoong-tang and Kwankyuboojayijoong-tang. The discourse of the symptoms and diseases at the Sasang Constitutional Medine is built up to base on the previous text in Gabobon and base on clinical experience in Sinchukbon. So clinical experience is the power of summarizing the pharmacology and escaping the previous pharmacology.
