Vietnamese Food Culture and Vietnamese Food in Korea (베트남의 음식 문화와 한국 속의 베트남 음식)

  • Since mid of 1990's Vietnamese food had been advanced in Korea, the franchises and branches of the Vietnam food restaurant remarkably has grown in numbers. It was estimated that the number of Vietnamese food franchise was not less than 30's and the market size of food industry would be around 200 million dollars in Korea. While the interests and study on the globalization of Korean food had been recently increasing, the Southeast Asian food, especially Vietnamese food which had significantly taken place as one kind of food service had few academic approaches to research on the current situation and transition on Vietnamese food in Korea. This study is an experimental attempt to inquire for the Vietnamese food culture and the Vietnamese food in Korea. Through the field research at local(Vietnamese) restaurant, the interviews with the local residents and questionnaire survey on the Vietnamese food from Korean customers, the article examined the 'Southeast Asian Phenomena' in Korea by tracing the origins and pathway how Vietnamese food could be established in Korean food market. In addition, it tries to prove that current growth of Vietnamese food in Korea could be extend and explicated as real 'Vietnamese Phenomena'.

A Study on the Classifications and Symbolic Meanings of Vietnamese Traditional Patterns

  • This study clarified the classifications of Vietnamese traditional patterns and analyzed the symbolic meanings that reflect the emotional and cultural background of the Vietnamese. The type and symbolism of Vietnamese traditional patterns were analyzed through research on the history of Vietnamese costumes, the history of Vietnamese arts, the history of Vietnamese traditional culture, and a Vietnamese museum survey. The results of this study were as follows: 1. Animal patterns are diverse and include dragons, unicorns, tortoises, phoenixes, cranes, lions, bats, tigers, and buffalo patterns. 2. Dragon patterns are the most utilized pattern for practical purposes. They are often used in royal costumes, Vietnamese traditional dresses, mandarin boots, bamboo fans, silk, satin, ceramics, and other detailed decorations. 3. The patterns symbolized fortune that meant good luck and longevity so people can live long and happy. Then the symbolic meanings of patterns were followed by prosperity, nobleness, apotropism, prolificacy, and wealth. 4. Since the most of animal patterns have symbolic meanings of fortune and longevity, animal patterns can be utilized as the source of traditional patterns of design inspiration for the development of Vietnamese modern patterns and the application on Vietnamese fashion products.

Experimental Study on the Korean Monophthongs by Vietnamese Advanced Korean Learners. (베트남인 고급 학습자의 한국어 단모음에 대한 실험음성학적 연구)

  • This study aims to research the acoustic properties of Korean and Vietnamese monophthongs by Vietnamese advanced Korean learners, and to discuss the realization of Korean monophthongs compared to Koreans. The Vietnamese advanced Korean learners do not distinguish between /e/ and /${\varepsilon}$/, which are the same as Korean. They pronounce Korean /e(${\varepsilon}$)/ close to /e/ in their native language. In the case of /ʌ/, it is reported that many errors are observed in previous studies. However, /ʌ/ of Vietnamese advanced learners is realized similar to /ʌ/ spoken by Koreans. /ɯ/ of Vietnamese advanced Korean learners is pronounced in the back of the tongue, whereas in the central by Koreans. In the case of /o/ and /u/, there is no significant difference by the Vietnamese advanced Korean learners. /ɯ/ and /u/ are pronounced in relatively front side of the tongue in Korean, but it is not observed in the Vietnamese advanced Korean learners.

Postmodern Vietnamese Literature

  • This study explores postmodernism in Vietnamese literature. While there has been much dispute among critics regarding postmodernism in Vietnamese literature, postmodernism is now thought to be something that cannot be denied. Vietnamese postmodernism has Vietnamese characteristics and is strongly influenced by American literature. The structure of some Vietnamese short stories is similar to that of some American writers. In the writings of Jean-François Lyotard, Jean Baudrillard and Ihab Hassan, for example, we find out many characteristics which are ascribed to postmodern Vietnamese literature. We propose the use of the term 'Lao Tzu discourse'which is to include the main concepts of postmodernism such as chaos, nothingness and fragmentation. We propose that postmodern Vietnamese Literature appeared in the 1940s with the collection, Fall Spring Poems (1942), and is also seen with the prose of Nguyen Khai and Nguyen Minh Chau in the 1980s, and the drama written by Luu Quang Vu in the 1980s. There now exists a large group of postmodern Vietnamese writers, like Le Dat, Thanh Thao, Bao Ninh, Cao Duy Son, Nguyen Ngoc Tu and Nguyen Binh Phuong, among others.

The Appearance and Its Development of Vietnamese Blue and White Porcelain (베트남 청화백자의 출현과 전개)

  • Vietnamese Blue and White Porcelain is famous for its unique form and colour of cobalt. It is said to be producted from the late of 14th Century to now. Vietnamese Blue and White Porcelain of 14th Century has a Mum design similar to that of Blue and White Porcelain of 14th Century in China. The Vietnamese Blue and White Porcelain of 15th, 16th Century was trade Ceramics which were shipped overseas. A base, having a dated inscription corresponding to 1450 and kept in the Topkapi Saray Museum is the best example of Vietnamese trade ceramics. The Vietnamese Blue and White Porcelain of 15th, 16th Century was a substitute for Chinese trade ceramics in these times when China had a police of the closure of China borderers to sea trade to protect China and was exported to the western Asia and the Southeast Asia. In recent, Fustat relics of Egypt was excavated the Vietnamese Blue and White Porcelain. It means that Vietnamese Ceramics of 15th, 16th Century was substitute for Chinese trade ceramics. In addition, Thai Blue celadon of 15th Century was exported to the western Asia as like Vietnamese Blue and White Porcelain. But when a police of the closure of China borderers to sea trade in China was stopped in the late of 16th Century and Chinese Ceramics were reborn in the same time, the Vietnamese Blue and White Porcelain was declined as trade items.

The A Case Study on the Adjustment of Family Living Culture in Relation to Women Who Have Immigrated Through Marriage - Vietnamese Women in Seoul - (결혼이주여성의 가정생활문화 적응에 관한 사례연구 - 베트남여성을 대상으로-)

  • This study focused on the adjustment of family living culture in relation to women who have immigrated for marriage. Specifically, it sought to determine how Vietnamese immigrant women understand and adapt to the culture of family life in Seoul, Korea. The investigation was conducted from 2 May to 30 May 2014, with 28 Vietnamese immigrant women as participants. Personal, family, social, and cultural factors affecting family life and culture were considered. It was determined that Vietnamese women can easily adapt to life in Korea to provide; the results of the material analysis are described below. First, Vietnamese immigrant women are satisfied with their economic life in Korea. In Vietnam, women have the right to marry Korean men if they want to. Vietnamese women are encouraged to marry want to marry a Korean man. Because they are satisfied with the present marriage. Second, migrant women learn to adapt to South Korean culture and food. However, cultural differences between a woman's husband and mother-in-law can become a source of conflict. Third, children of multicultural families easily accept Vietnamese people, since they are educated to do so through their Vietnamese mothers Vietnamese woman wants to teach their children the Vietnamese food and culture. Fourth, the Vietnamese immigrant women also participate in multicultural family support centers and communities. They want to become productive members of society through employment opportunities in South Korea. Fifth, the cultural and welfare policies of the government should be carried on so that migrant women are able to study cultural adaptation. This case study examined difficulties that Vietnamese immigrant women have in adjusting to life and culture in Korea. The findings could be used as a resource to help Vietnamese women living in Korea.

Consumer Value and Social Media Usage on Luxury Product for Vietnamese Consumers

  • Vietnamese luxury market is rapidly growing, however, there is a few researches on Vietnamese consumers' perceptions of luxury products and influential factors in purchasing intention. The purpose of this study is to explore Vietnamese consumers' value dimensions and mediating effect of social media information for their decision making for luxury product. Data were collected using self-administered mail survey. This study examines the influences of consumers' perceptions of quality and value, and social media word-of-mouth on Vietnamese consumers' luxury purchase intention.

The Dispute Resolution Culture and Negotiation Strategy in Vietnam Based on Area Studies Methodology (베트남의 분쟁해결문화와 비즈니스협상전략: 지역연구 방법론을 중심으로)

  • This study examines the dispute resolution culture and negotiation strategy in Vietnam. We adopt area studies methodology in order to analyze dispute resolution and negotiation strategy in Vietnam, since the dispute resolution and negotiation strategy are keenly connected with the culture, law, institution, and economic system of the society. Our findings are as follows. First, Vietnamese society has the culture that has the characteristics of maternal society and patrilineal society. Vietnamese women has traditionally participated in the economic activity. Second, Vietnamese people showed loyalty to the nation. Third, Vietnamese society is shown to belong to the culture of collectivism. In addition, we investigate the multi-faced characteristics of Vietnamese dispute resolution culture and negotiation strategy. Our findings are as follows. First, Vietnamese people utilize middlemen in implementing dispute resolution and negotiation. Second, Vietnamese people prefer long-term negotiation style. Third, Vietnamese people is accustomed to face-saving culture. Fourth, Vietnamese people prefer the indirect communication style. Fifth, Vietnamese people prefer written document instead of oral agreement in contract. Sixth, Vietnamese people and firms prefer ADR to formal law.

Vietnamese Court Vessel Journeys to Canton in the 19th Century (19세기 베트남 관선의 광동(廣東) 왕래 시말)

  • In terms of seaborne contacts of Vietnamese court with foreign countries had two directions in the 19th century. One was with Island Southeast Asian ports such as Singapore, Malacca, Penang, Batavia, and Manila. The other direction was to Canton. The Canton contact of Vietnam again can be interpreted as one of the two directions of Vietnamese contact with China. The inland route far to Beijing was based on the political and diplomatic consideration, while the closer route to Canton by the court vessels was more for the economic consideration as the case for the contact with the Island Southeast Asia. In this article, author discusses three issues to illuminate the nature of the trips of the court vessels of the Nguyễn dynasty to Canton. First is to clarify detail itinerary of the trip from the Thuận An Estuary to the City of Canton via Đà Nãng and Hanan. Unlike to the Western ships that visited Canton but anchored at the Huang Fu, Vietnamese square-rigged/copper-bottomed ships sailed up the Pearl river to the Guangzhou city front to stay for four or five months before they returned to Vietnam. In the second chapter, various kinds of observation of the Vietnamese officials are discussed. If the objects of the observation are divided into two categories, one is the world Westerners in Canton, and the other is the world of Chinese. In a same place, Canton, the Vietnamese officials could have enough chance to compare the two worlds clearly. An important consequence for the Vietnamese officials was to conclude that the mechanical technology of the Westerners was better than that of Chinese. This kind of conclusion led the Vietnamese court to send court personnels to learn Western technologies and languages in the port cities of Island Southeast Asia and to enlarge contacts with them. In the last chapter, author tries to find out the items that the Vietnamese mission purchased in Canton in exchange to the Vietnamese products. The items that the Vietnamese mission purchased included ceramics, silk, books, and medicines. With the support of the Chinese settlers in Vietnam the mission was able to be involved in the deal of illegal items such as opium, and possibly some kinds of precious ginseng from Korea. Overall, the process of the itinerary, observation, and purchase during the trip to Canton was the way to form the new point of view of Vietnamese intellectuals towards China standing from the side of Westerners. To the Vietnamese who experienced both Canton/Macao and the Western worlds in the port cities of Island Southeast Asia China was not the only center of the world, nor the Westerners could be looked down as the barbarians. In Canton, a peripheral region looked from the imperial capital Beijing, but the most internationalized city of China at that time, Vietnamese officials were training themselves to overcome China.
