This is the study on causes and remedies of hearing disturbance in chinese medical journals(1991-1993). The results were as follows. 1. The causes of sudden deafness(突發性耳聾) were usually fire in the liver(肝火).phlegmatic fire(痰火), deficiency of the vital function and essence of the kidney(腎虛), blood stasis or sludge due to stagnation of vital energy stagnation(氣滯血瘀). Remove endogenous heat or fire method(淸瀉火熱法). circulation of phlegm and dampness(運化痰濕). using tonics to cure disease due to deficiency of vital essence of both the liver and the kidney(滋補肝腎) were used for each treatment. 2.The causes of menieres disease were usually mental disturbance due to phlegmatit fire(痰化上搖). dampness-phlegm long standing(痰濕內停), water-dampness retention(水濕停滯), Method of remove heat and circulation phlegm(淸熱化痰法), method of remove water and dampness(利水渗濕法), invigorate function of the spleen and circulation of dampness method(健脾化濕法) were used for each treatment. 3. The causes of toxico-deafness(中毒性 耳聾) were usually heart, liver and kidney functional weakness(心肝腎虛), vital essence and blood weakness(氣血虛弱). Remove obstruction in the flow and circulation phlegm(通窮化痰), reinforce vital energy and tonify blood (補氣活血), using tonics to cure disease due to deficiency of vital essence of both the liver and the kidney(滋補肝腎) were used for each treatment. 4. The causes of deafness (耳聾), tinitus(耳鳴) were usually mental disturbance due to wind and heat(風熱上搖). flaming up of excessive heat of the liver(肝火上亢). exhaustion seat of reproductive essence in kidney(腎精虧虛). Remove endogenous heat and disperse wind(淸熱疏風). remove the fire of liver(淸肝瀉火), through nourish kidney check exuberance of yang(滋腎潛陽), nourish kidney yang(補腎陽). replenish vital energy and improve essential substance(益精血), blood activate for treatment of blood stasis(活血化瘀) were used for each treatment. 5. The effects of mainly used drugs were classified into method of water and dampness remove medicine(利水渗濕藥), nourishing liver and kidney medicine(補肝腎藥), improve blood and vital energy activate medicine(活血行氣藥), through nourish yan medicine check exuberance of yang(滋陰潛陽藥).

Senile involution is divided into two classes : physiological senile involution and pathological senile involution. Physiological senile involution is a natural process of vital action of decreasing Vital Essence and Energy in kidney that is a necessary physiological phenomenon. Pathological senile involution is an evidence of impairment of True Qi of internal human body. Human vital action is a changing process of life, senility, sickness, and death. In other words, this is a natural process of being full and decreasing of Vital Essence and Energy in kidney, and True Qi of human body decides this process. The Vital Essence and Energy in kidney vary, and they are influenced and restricted by various elements. The time of a senile involution varies individually. Human body protects and makes efforts not to leak out True Qi in effective ways. We can postpone a limit of time of physiological senile involution phenomenon. This is called 'Health Preservation' - resistance against senile involution.

Medical science is an area of study that focuses on maintaining health and treating disease. However, modern medicine focuses on treating disease and neglects methodology of maintaining health. Although the definition of heal this defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) and as the concept of harmonizing Yin and Yang in Korean medicine, there is no specific details regarding the definition. Thus, the following conclusion was obtained after the concept of health is viewed through Yin-Yang(陰陽), Vital Essence(精), Qi(氣), and Healthy Person(平人). Although Yin and Yang have opposite properties, they work very closely, maintaining the overall balance and harmony. Secondly, Vin and Yang would each function by the effects of one another, and the body could maintain normal physiological activities through this function. Thirdly, it maintains normal physiological state through the ascending Kidney-Water and descending Heart-Yang(水升火降). Fourthly, Vital Essence is divided into the congenital Essence(先天之精) and the acquired Essence(後天之精) in which the former is related with reproduction and the latter, nourishing. Fifthly, Qi is resistant to pathogens and related with the physique so that Qi and physique should be balanced. Sixthly, Healthy Person is the state where the exchange of Qi-Blood is active.

Water, in a living being, is as essential as the essence derived from food is in maintaining one's life. The concepts are expressed in forms of "food and drink" and "drink-food" in the ${\mathbb{\ulcorner}}Hwangjenakyoung{\mathbb{\lrcorner}}$ and most of the other oriental medicine related references. Following the steps of the human body's metabolism, the water source builds up characteristic formations, such as bodily fluids (blood/perspiration/urine/essence), in each transforming phase according to the nature of the Ki that propels the transformation. Furthermore, each characteristic formations has its' own suitable duties, distinctive features and its field of activation. The vital energy of life is identified as a positive property due its fluidity and its formless nature. In order for this vital energy to come into its own, it needs to weld into one with the material-natured body of the negative property which will embrace the positive property and transform it into body fluid. Water taken into a body will undergo the first activation of Ki, dissolving the Wigi and the Wongi and transforming into the primary body fluid. The delicates among the dissolved Ki will once again go through a transformation in the Jungcho. It will turn into red blood, with influence of the vital function. When the vital energy completes its duties in all parts of the body, it combines with water again and transforms into the secondary bodily fluid. This is when the Takgi gets filtered and the new enriched essence is created.

Background: Rehmanniae radix preparata is a medicinal herb widely used in Asian countries, to replenish Yin and Vital Essence through strengthen the kidney function. In Oriental Medicine the brain has physiological relationship with the Vital Essence. And central nerve system (CNS) is also refered to as 'Sea of the Vital Essence'. So if the Vital Essence is strong it will nourish the brain and memory will all be keen. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of 7 to 14 days treatment with Rehmanniae radix preparata (3.4 g /100 g, per os) on retention performance of rats in a passive avoidance situation. Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were trained on a one-trial passive avoidance task using a two-way shuttle box by giving a foot shock. They were tested for retention of 6h, 24h, 72h, 168h, and 336h after training. Results: Rehmanniae radix preparata treated rats showed a increased performance in retention test as compared to saline at 6hr (P<0.05) and 24hr (P<0.05). Conclusion: These data suggest that Rehmanniae radix preparata treatment can improve memory in the rat.

After bibliographic study on function of the brain(腦, nao) on the basis of zangxiang theory(藏象論的), the theory of visceral activities), the following conclusions were obtained: 1. Brain is the organ conglomerated with marrow(隨, sui) between Baihui(百會) and Fengfu(風府) 2. Brain has different function and names according to the parts. 3. Brain is on anatomical view the extraordinary organ(奇恒之府, qiheng zhi fu) and stores clarified air(氣, qi) of fresh air. 4. Brain is the places where the viral essence (精, jeong) of five viscera is activated. 5. Brain is the places where the vital essence congeries into the mind(神, shen) Yang form of the essence. 6. The mind converted from the brain emerges in the whole body the sensory organs and carries vital function. 7. Brain reservoirs the mind, while the heart(心, xm) is thought to make judgement inroyght the speculation on the outward stimulus of matter and give orders to the mind in the chest.

Through the translation and comparative study of the enriching blood and nourishing vital essence(補陰血方劑) in "The Elimination & Supplement about the Famous Prescription Comments(刪補名醫方論)" of "The Golden Mirror of Medicine(醫宗金鑑)" with "The Famous Prescription Comments on Ancient and Modern Times(古今名醫方論)", we confirmed that about 50% of the sentences from "The Elimination & Supplement about the Famous Prescription Comments(刪補名醫方論)" were quoted in "The Famous Prescription Comments on Ancient and Modern Times(古今名醫方論)", and that many of the text were not quoted unchanged, but were revised and supplemented. In organization, the prescription with the fewer number of component drugs is given first, followed by that with more component drugs, and that with similar component drugs is explained subsequently to facilitate understanding. In the prescription notes, it is emphasized that when enriching blood, the invigorative method(補氣法) is very important and that cold or pungent herb should be very carefully used.

In this study, I investigated physiology and pathology of the kidney and then researched deficiency of the kidney-nourishing the Eum music therapy to apply for clinical use, because symptoms such as chronic fatigue, morbus asthenia, anxiety, dizziness, tinnitus, and amnesia are prevalent in our modern societies. These symptoms are due to deficiency of the kidney. The kidney stores vital essence and has a function to keep activities as motive power. If the kidney is abnormal in storing the essence and holding Gi, various symptoms like dizziness, tinnitus, amnesia are caused by deficiency of the kidney. In deficiency of the kidney-nourishing the Eum music therapy, Water-Gi music which can store the essence is mainly used. In case of patients with deficiency of the kidney, dizziness, tinnitus, and amnesia, we can make use of NO.3, BWV 1068, Air of J.S.Bach and Jinyangjo of Geomungo. If there are flaring-up and fidgetiness due to deficiency of vital essence, Earth-Gi music that can help the vigor of spleen and stomach should be used prior to Water-Gi music. In the concrete, Hahyeondodeuri of Yeongsanhoesang played on Geomungo can be used. The tinnitus is caused by wind-heat and fire in the gallbladder. It is good to nourish the Eum through Water-Gi music after dispelling pathogens through Jajinmori among Gayageum sanjo.

It has been known that Tri-origin theory could describe pertinently the dynamic phenomena of life. From the viewpoint of the asian image-mathematics, the most representative Tri-origin could be Four Images, Five Phases, and Six Qi(six kinds of weather). In Korean traditional medicine, Tri-origin could be meridian system, Jangbu viscera system, and body essence vital energy mentality blood system. Here we reasoned whether asian image-mathematics could be applicable to Korean traditional medicine system, and as a conclusion ; Meridian system belongs to Six Qi, Jangbu viscera system belongs to Five Phases, and body essence vital energy mentality blood system belongs to Four Images.
