This study investigates the reason why the barotropic vorticity structure prevails vertically in response to the enhanced convection associated with the boreal summer intraseasonal oscillation over the central Indian Ocean. The relative vorticity tendency analysis for a 2.5-layer simplified model demonstrates that the barotopic vorticity structure is predominant due to the following two factors: 1) vertical easterly shear on the meridional gradient of barotropic divergence (which induces generation of barotropic vorticity twice larger than that of baroclinic vorticity); and 2) vertical easterly shear on the meridional gradient of baroclinic divergence (which appears only in relation to the generation of barotropic vorticity). The percentage of contribution by each term to barotropic and baroclinic vorticity tendency equations is presented.
A two-dimensional direct numerical simulation is performed to investigate the formation characteristics of a single vortex interacting with $CH_4/N_2$-Air counterflow nonpremixed flame. The numerical method was based on a predictor-corrector scheme for a low Mach number flow. The detailed transport properties and a 16-step augmented reduced mechanism are adopted in this calculation. The budgets of the vorticity transport equation arc examined to reveal the mechanisms leading to the formation, evolution and dissipation of a single vortex interacting with counterflow nonpremixed flame. It is found that the stretching term, which depends on the azimuthal component of vorticity, and radial velocity, mainly generates vortieitv in non-reacting and reacting flows. The viscous and baroclinic torque term destroy the vorticity in non-reacting flow. In addition, the baroclinic torque term due to density and pressure gradient generates vorticity, while viscous and the volumetric expansion terms due to density gradient destroy vorticity in reacting flow.
A 4-level baroclinic numerical model is designed by using the vorticity equation and Omega equation. Block-Cyclic-Reduction method is applied to the solution of the Helmholtz defferential equation, which is proved to be better than the Relaxation method from the composite viewpoint of accuracy, stability and economy. It was investigated whether the model explains the physical process influenced by voricity and temperature advection. It was also examined if the model atmosphere describes the general circulation. This examination is similar to Phillips(1956). The result of this numerical experiment shows that the model explains qualitatively the Quasi-Geostrophic theory for the development of Baroclinic wave, as throughly described in Holton(1972).
A two-dimensional direct numerical simulation is performed to investigate the dynamic behaviors of a single vortex in counter reacting and non-reacting flow field. A predictor-corrector-type numerical scheme with a low Mach number approximation is used in this simulation. A 16-step augmented reduced mechanism is adopted to treat the chemical reaction. The budget of the vorticity transport equation is examined to reveal a mechanism leading to the formation, destruction and transport of a single vortex according to the direction of vortex generation in reacting and non-reacting flows. The results show that air-side vortex has more larger strength than that of fuel-side vortex in both non-reacting and reacting flows. In reacting flow, the vortex is more dissipated than that in non-reacting flow as the vortex approach the flame. The total circulation in reacting flow, however, is larger than that in non-reacting flow because the convection transport of vorticity becomes much large by the increased velocity near the flame region. It is also found that the stretching and the convection terms mainly generate vorticity in non-reacting and reacting flows. The baroclinic torque term generates vorticity, while the viscous and the volumetric expansion terms attenuate vorticity in reacting flow. Furthermore, the contribution of volumetric expansion term on total circulation for air-side vortex is much larger than that of fuel-side vortex. It is also estimated that the difference of total circulation near stagnation plane according to the direction of vortex generation mainly attributes to the convection term.
To investigate the effect of mechanical parameters on the circulation and its fluctuation in Sagami Bay, baroclinic model experiments were carried out by use of a two-layer source-sink flow in a rotating tank. In the experiment, a simple coastal topography with flat bottom was reproduced. The results show that the path of the Through Flow, which corresponds to the branch current of the Kuroshio, depends on external Rossby number (Ro) and internal Rossby number $(Ro^*)$, and divided into two regimes. For $Ro^*\leq1.0$ in which Rossby internal radius of deformation of the Through Flow is smaller than the width of the approaching channel, the current flows along the Oshima Island as a coastal boundary density current separated from the western boundary of the channel. For $Ro^*>1.0$ it changes to a jet flow along the western boundary of the channel, separated from the coast of Oshima Island. The current is independent on both Ro and Ro* in the regime of $Ro^*>1.0,\;Ro\geq0.06$ and $Ro^*\leq1.0,\;Ro\geq0.06$. The pattern of the cyclonic circulation in the inner part of the bay is also determined by Ro and Ro*. In case of $Ro^*\leq1.0$, frontal eddies are formed in the northern boundary of the Through Flow. These frontal eddies intrude into the inner part along the eastern boundary of the bay providing vorticity to form and maintain the inner cyclonic circulation. For $Ro^*>1.0$, the wakes from the Izu peninsula are superposed intensifying the cyclonic circulation. The pattern of the cyclonic circulation is divided into three types; 1) weak cyclonic circulation and the inner anticyclonic circulation $(Ro<0.12)$. 2) cyclonic circulation in the bay $(0.12\leq Ro<0.25)$. 3) cyclonic circulation with strong boundary current $(RO\geq0.25)$.
This study investigated the cause of the heavy snowfall that occurred in the East Coast of Korea from 6 February to 14 February 2014. The synoptic conditions were analyzed using blocking index, equivalent potential temperature, potential vorticity, maritime temperature difference, temperature advection, and ground convergence. During the case period, a large blocking pattern developed over the Western Pacific causing the flow to be stagnant, and there was a North-South oriented High-to-Low pressure system over the Korean Peninsula because of this arrangement. The case period was divided into three parts based on the synoptic forcing that was responsible for the heavy snowfall; detailed analyses were conducted for the first and last period. In the first period, a heavy snowfall occurred over the entire Korean Peninsula due to strong updrafts from baroclinic instability and a low pressure caused by potential vorticity located at the mid-troposphere. In the lower atmosphere, a North-South oriented High-to-Low pressure system over the Eastern Korea intensified the easterly airflow and created a convergence zone near the ground which strengthened the upslope effect of the Taebaek Mountain range with a cumulative fresh snowfall amount of 41 cm in the East Coast region. In the last period, the cold air nestled in the Maritime Province of Siberia and Manchuria strengthened much more than that in the first half and extended to the East Sea. The temperature difference between the 850 hPa air and the SST was large and convective clouds developed over the sea. The highest cumulative fresh snow amount of 39.7 cm was recorded in the coastal area during this period. During the entire period, vertically oriented equivalent potential temperature showed neutral stability layer that helped the cloud formation and development in the East Coast. The 2014 heavy snowfall case over the East Coast provinces of Korea were due to: 1) stagnation of the system by blocking pattern, 2) the dynamic effect of mid-level potential vorticity of 1.6 PVU, 3) the easterly air flow from North-South oriented High-to-Low pressure system, 4) the existence of vertically oriented neutral stable layer, and 5) the expansion of strong cold air into the East Sea which created a large temperature difference between the air and the ocean.
The evolutionary process of the polar low, which caused the heavy snowfall in the East Coast area on 11~12 February 2011, was investigated to describe in detail using synoptic weather charts, satellite imageries, and ERA (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Re-Analysis) -Interim reanalysis data. It was revealed that 1) the polar low was generated over the sea near Busan where a large cyclonic shear in the inverted trough branched from the parent low existed, 2) during the developing and mature stages, there was a convectively unstable region in the lower layer around the polar low and its south side, 3) the polar low was developed in the region where the static stability in the 500~850 hPa layer was the lowest, 4) the result from the budget analysis of the vorticity equation indicated that the increase in the vorticity at the lower atmosphere, where the polar low was located, was dominated mainly by the stretching term, 5) the warm core structure of the polar low was identified in the surface-700 hPa layer during the mature stage, 6) there was a close inverse relationship between a development of the polar low and the height of the dynamic tropopause over the polar low, and 7) for generation and development of the polar low, large-scale circulation systems, such as upper cold low and its combined short wave trough, major low (parent low), and polar air outbreak, should be presented, indicating that the polar low has the nature of the baroclinic disturbance.
A method for the mixing augmentation of the transverse injection of fuel in a Scramjet combustor is suggested. Based on the fact that the main factor controlling the mixing characteristics in transverse injection is the effective back-pressure (the pressure around the injection hole) it is tried to make a flow expansion near the injection port in order to reduce effective back-pressure. A three dimensional Navier-Stokes code adopting the upwind method of Roe#s flux difference splitting scheme is used. The k-w SST turbulence model turbulence model is used to calculate the turbulent viscosity. It is shown that the reducing of the effective back-pressure make it possible to increase the penetration distance and to increase the mixing rate without excessive losses of stagnation pressure. Also, it is shown that the streamwise vorticity generated by baroclinic torque has great influences on the mixing process.
A two-layer quasi-geostrophic numerical model is used to investigate the temporal variability of the East Korea Warm Current (EKWC), especially the separation from the Korean coast and the generation of warm eddies. An attention is given on the active role of the nonlinear boundary layer process. For this, an idealized flat bottom model of the East Sea is forced with the annual mean wind curl and with the inflow-outflow specified at the Korea (Tsushima) and Tsugaru Straits. Two types of separation mechanisms are identified. The first one is influenced by the westward movement of the recirculating leg of the EKWC (externally driven separation),the second one is solely driven by the boundary layer dynamics (internally driven separation). However, these two processes are not independent, and usually coexist. It is hypothesized that 'internally driven separation' arises as the result of relative vorticity production at the wall, its subsequent advection via the EKWC, and its accumulation up to a critical level characterized by the separation of the boundary flow from the coast. It is found that the sharp southeastern corner of the Korean peninsula provides a favorable condition for the accumulation of relative vorticity. The separation of the EKWC usually accompanies the generation of a warm eddy with a diameter of about 120 km. The warm eddy has a typical layer-averaged velocity of 0.3 m/s and its lifespan is up to a year. In general, the characteristics of the simulated warm eddy are compatible with observations. A conclusion is therefore drawn that the variability of the EKWC is at least partially self-excited, not being influenced by any sources of perturbation in the forcing field, and that the likely source of the variability is the barotropic instability although the extent of contribution from the baroclinic instability remains unknown. The effects of the seasonal wind curl and inflow-outflow strength are also investigated.
Two heavy snowfall events occurred in Yeongnam and Yeongdong regions of the Korean Peninsula during the period from 4 to 6 March 2005 are analyzed. The events were developed by two different meso-scale snow clouds associated with an extratropical low passing over the Western Pacific. Based on synoptic data, GOES-9 satellite images, and precipitation amount data, the events were named as Sokcho and Busan cases, respectively. We analyzed the development mechanism of the events using meterological variables from the NCEP(National Centers for Environmental Prediction) /NCAR(National Centers for Atmospheric Research) reanalysis data such as potential vorticity(PV), divergence, tropopause undulation, static stability, and meridional wind circulation. The present analyses show that in the case of Sokcho, the cyclonic circulation in the lower atmosphere in the strong baroclinic region induced the cyclonic circulation in the upper atmosphere. The cyclonic circulation in the lower and upper atmosphere caused a heavy snowfall in the Sokcho region. In the case of Busan, the strong cyclonic circulation in the upper atmosphere was initiated by the stratospheric air intrusion with the high positive PV into the troposphere during the tropopause folding. The upper strong cyclonic circulation enhanced the cyclonic circulation in the lower disturbed atmosphere due to the extratropical low. This lower cyclonic circulation in turn, intensified the upper cyclonic circulation, that caused a heavy snowfall in the Busan region.
