  • In evaporative cooling applications, the evaporation water is supplied usually sufficiently larger than the amount evaporated to enlarge contact surface between the water and the air. Especially in indirect evaporative coolers, however, if the evaporation water flow rate is excessively large, the evaporative cooling effect is not used for heat absorption from the hot fluid but spent to the sensible cooling of the evaporation water itself. This would result in a decrease in the cooling performance of the indirect evaporative cooler. In this study, the effects of the evaporation water flow rate on the cooling performance are investigated theoretically. The cooling process in an indirect evaporative cooler is modeled into a set of linear differential equations and solved to obtain the exact solutions to the temperatures of the hot fluid, the moist air, and the evaporation water. Based on the exact solutions, it is analyzed how much the cooling performance is affected by the evaporation water flow rate. The results show that the decrease in the cooling effectiveness is substantial even for a small flow rate of the evaporation water and the relative decrease is more serious for a high-performance evaporative cooler.

  • The objective of the present study is to predict the characteristics of heat and mass transfer around an evaporative condenser. Numerical calculations have been performed using multi-zone method to investigate heat transfer rate and evaporation rate with the variation of inlet condition(velocity, relative humidity and temperature) of the moist air, the flow rate of the cooling water and the shape of the condenser tube. From the results it is found that the profile of heat flux is the same as that of evaporation rate since heat transfer along the gas-liquid interface is dominated by the transport of latent heat in association with the vaporization(evaporation) of the liquid film. The evaporation rate and heat transfer rate is increased as mass flow rate increases or relative humidity and temperature decrease respectively. But the flow rate of the cooling water hardly affect the evaporation rate and heat flux along the gas-liquid interface. The elliptic tube which the ratio of semi-minor axis to semi-major axis is 0.8 is more effective than the circular tube because the pressure drop is decreased. But the evaporation rate and heat flux shown independency on the tube shape.

  • In many companies handling flammable liquids, explosion-proof electrical equipment have been installed according to the Korean Industrial Standards (KS C IEC 60079-10-1). In these standards, hazardous area for explosive gas atmospheres has to be classified by the evaluation of the evaporation rate of flammable liquid leakage. The evaporation rate is an important factor to determine the zones classification and hazardous area distance. However, there is no systematic method or rule for the estimation of evaporation rate in these standards and the first principle equations of a evaporation rate are very difficult. Thus, it is really hard for industrial workplaces to employ these equations. Thus, this problem can trigger inaccurate results for evaluating evaporation range. In this study, empirical models for estimating an evaporation rate of flammable liquid have been developed to tackle this problem. Throughout the sensitivity analysis of the first principle equations, it can be found that main factors for the evaporation rate are wind speed and temperature and empirical models have to be nonlinear. Polynomial regression is employed to build empirical models. Methanol, benzene, para-xylene and toluene are selected as case studies to verify the accuracy of empirical models.

  • The performance of the evaporation facility of low radioactive liquid waste is studied experimentally. The evaporation facility comprises storage pools, feeding pumps, evaporation units with 1,040 sheets of cloth and air handling units. As the results of this study, it is found that the evaporation rate increases as the waste feed rate increases, the relative humidity of induced air decreases, and the air velocity increases. The modified Dalton's evaporation equation derived from experimental data is $E_h=(0.0168+0.0141V){\Delta}H$. The optimum operating conditions of the evaporation facility are waste feed rate of $4.5./hr.m^2$ and air velocity of 1.47m/sec.

  • A long-term change in the evaporation rate have an influence on the hydrologic processes at the interface between the land surface-air and crop yield. Several previous studies have reported declines in pan evaporation rate, while actual evaporation rate is expected to increase due to anthropogenic global change in the future. The decreasing trend of pan evaporation rate might be involved with global warming and accordingly the trend of annual pan evaporation rate also needs to be checked here in Korea. In this study, 14 points of pan evaporation observation are intensively studied to investigate the trend of pan evaporation for the time period of 1970-2000. Annual pan evaporation is decreasing at the rate of 1.6mm/yr, which corresponds to approximately 50mm for 30 years. Annual pan evaporation rate is larger by $\sim10%$ at the coastal area and decreasing rate is faster as -2.46 mm/yr per year, while that is -0.82 mm/yr per year at the in-land area. The results of the Mann-Kendall trend test shows 4 points are decreasing and 10 points are unchanged with 95% confidence interval. But national annual average values show the decreasing trend of pan evaporation rate as a whole, which corresponds to general trend all over the world. This study will contribute to a variety of studies on water resources, hydrology, agricultural engineering, meteorology, and coastal engineering in association with future global climate change.

  • Films of Cr, Cu, and Al were deposited by the evaporation technique at the high vacuum level-high evaporation rate and the low vacuum level-low evaporation rate. We measured sheet resistance and light transmittance, and observed microstructure and diffraction pattern by TEM, and investigated oxygen content in thin film by AES. We discussed the relations among microstructure, sheet resistance, and light transmittance with AES data. We found that the films deposited at the high vacuum level-high evaporation rate have small oxygen content in thin film comparing to the films deposited at the low vacuum level-low vacuum level-low evaporation rate, and that the films having crystalline structure and larger grain size were formed in the case of the high vacuum level-high evaporation rate and they showed lower sheet resistance and lower light transmittance.

  • As a part of evaluating the volatility of iodide ions subjected to gamma irradiation, $I_2$ evaporation experiments were performed with $I_2$ and $I^-$ mixed solutions in the temperature range $26-80^{\circ}C$ in an open, well-ventilated space. The evaporation of $I_2$ was observed to follow primarily first order kinetics, depending on the $I_2$ concentration. The evaporation rate constant increased rapidly with increase in temperature. The presence of $I^-$ slightly reduced the evaporation rate of $I_2$ by forming relatively stable $I_3^-$. The effect of $Cl^-$ at <1.0 wt% on $I_2$ evaporation was insignificant. The evaporation rate constants of $I_2$ were $1.3{\times}10^{-3}min^{-1}\;cm^{-2}$, $2.4{\times}10^{-2}min^{-1}\;cm^{-2}$, and $8.6{\times}10^{-2}min^{-1}\;cm^{-2}$, at $26^{\circ}C$, $50^{\circ}C$, and $80^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • Evaporation rate constant, obtained by in this experimental study, of freely falling liquid fuel droplet on the condition of hot and pressurized environment are converted to critical evaporation constant according to Eq. of Ranz and Marshall. Critical evaporation constant, on constant environment pressuire, actively increase almost linearly with environment temperature increasing, but, on constant temperature, increases more or less with pressure increasing. Multycomponent droplet mixed with the fine fuel having a different of boiling point evaporate in order to boiling point, and each evaporation rate constant of mixed fuel equal to each fuel.

  • This study aims to investigate the influence of the droplet volume on the evaporation characteristics of the sessile droplet. In particular, the effect of the free convection in the vapor domain on the evaporation rate was analyzed through the numerical simulation. The commercial code of the ANSYS Fluent (V.2020 R2) was used to simulate the heat transfer in the liquid-vapor domain. Moreover, we used the diffusion model to estimate the evaporation rate for the different droplet volume under the room temperature. It was found that the evaporation rate significantly increases with the droplet volume because of the larger surface area for the mass transfer. Also, the effect of free convection on the evaporation rate becomes significant with an increment of droplet volume owing to the increase in the droplet radius corresponding to the characteristic length of the free convection.

  • Hydrocarbon emission from spark ignition engines deeply relates with fuel evaporation mechanism. Therefore, fuel evaporation on the back of the intake valve is very important to understand fuel evaporation mechanism during engine warm up period. Intake valve heat transfer model was build up to estimate the amount of fuel evaporation on the intake valve back . Intake valve temperature was measured intake valve temperature is increased rapidly during few seconds right after engine start up and it takes an important role on fuel evaporation. The liquid fuel evaporation rate on the intake valve back proportionally increases as valve temperature increases, however its contribution slightly decreases as intake port wall temperature increases. The fuel evaporation rate on the valve back is about 40∼60% during engine warm-up period and it becomes about 20∼30% as intake port wall temperature increases. The estimation model also makes possible model also makes possible to review the effect of valve design parameters such as the valve mass and seat area on fuel evaporation rate through intake valve heat transfer.
