This paper aims to examine Alan Turing's life at the centenary of his birth and to discuss a philosophical implication of his work by concentrating on halting theorem particularly. Turing negatively solved Hilbert's decision problem by proving impossibility of solving halting problem. In this paper I claim that the impossibility implies limits of reason, and accordingly that the marginality in cognition and/or in action should be recognized.

Lucy Snowe, the heroine and narrator of Charlotte Brontë's Villette, has oftentimes been studied in terms of her silence. However, the critics' approach to Lucy's silence has been mostly negative as her silence has often been interpreted as an illustration of her sense of absence, powerlessness, unreliability, or mental deprivation. Lucy's silence, however, is complex in nature as the functions and meanings of her silence vary depending on when, why, and how silence is performed. This article particularly looks into the moments in which Lucy's silence generates multifarious meanings and resonances depending on the contexts in and the purpose for which it is exercised, such as a sense of wholeness, marginality, power and individuality. First of all, Lucy's silence about herself during the recount of her childhood days at Bretton implies the feeling of entirety and peacefulness where the identification of the "I" becomes unnecessary. Second, Lucy's silence in relation to Paulina at Bretton denotes her social marginality and powerlessness. Third, as an older self/narrator, Lucy chooses to be silent in order to exert power over the readers. And lastly, Lucy's conscious refusal to tell the readers what she already knows also serves to reveal her sense of individuality. Through the instances of Lucy Snowe's silence in Bronte's Villette, I demonstrate the possibility to reveal various aspects of one's self through silence.

The cooperative game theory consists of a set of players and utility function that has positive values for a subset of players, called coalition, in the game. The purpose of cost allocation method is to allocate the relevant cost among game players in a fair and rational way. Therefore, cost allocation method based on cooperative game theory has been applied in many areas for fair and reasonable cost allocation. On the other hand, the desirable characteristics of the cost allocation method are Pareto optimality, rationality, and marginality. Pareto optimality means that costs are entirely paid by participating players. Rationality means that by joining the grand coalition, players do not pay more than they would if they chose to be part of any smaller coalition of players. Marginality means that players are charged at least enough to cover their marginal costs. If these characteristics are all met, the solution of cost allocation method exists in the core. In this study, proportional method is applied to EOQ inventory game and EPQ inventory game with shortage. Proportional method is a method that allocates costs proportionally to a certain allocator. This method has been applied to a variety of problems because of its convenience and simple calculations. However, depending on what the allocator is used for, the proportional method has a weakness that its solution may not exist in the core. Three allocators such as demand, marginal cost, and cost are considered. We prove that the solution of the proportional method to demand and the proportional method to marginal cost for EOQ game and EPQ game with shortage is in the core. The counterexample also shows that the solution of the proportional method to cost does not exist in the core.

Yanbian is the area where many Korean-Chinese have settled and have undergone a unique culture. This study is intended to examine the clothing life of Korean-Chinese in Yanbian in the aspects of the cultural marginality and the effects of other cultures. Nowadays they have three kinds of dresses" Han-Bok In-Min-Bok and the western dress. han-Bok is the result of cultural marginal phenomenon so they pre-serve 1920s style which already disappeared in South Korea. In-Min-Bok is the production of Communism which is an 'invention' from the viewpoint of Cultural-Anthropology. However both Han-Bok and In-Min-Bok are gradually disappearing from the daily life. Today it is quite common for us to see a number of people wearing western dresses on the street. In their clothing life the acculturation to the Chinese wasn't traced which may be due to the strong 'National I dentity' of them.

This paper illustrates potential applications of POM/OPM/BOR, which are used for deterministic reliability evaluation in the operation mode (operational planning and operating) in Korea Power System. Deterministic reliability evaluation in this paper bases the philosophy of the marginality and the limitation of physical quantity (voltage and thermal in main) under contingency analysis. The POM/OPM/BOR tools have been developed by V&R (Vaimann and Research) in USA. Before case studies, main frame and feature of the tools are introduced in brief. Case studies of the actual power system of Korea are demonstrated for checking the application possibility of POM/OPM/BOR.

This essay "Twain's Contestation of Emersonian Transcendental Manhood in Huckleberry Finn" explores how Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884) manifests his postwar contestation of Ralph Waldo Emerson's transcendental manhood that endorses the dogmatic, egocentric, and decorporealized position of the Cartesian subject, who believes his being's unity, elevation, and centrality through his fantasy of possessing direct access to divine truth. The connection between Emerson and Twain is based not on Emerson's influence on Twain but on their common interest in American landscape as a site for the redefinition of manhood and masculinity. I examine different types of manhood in their association with nature in Huckleberry Finn by comparing them with the two fundamental concepts of Emerson's philosophy: "a true man" in "Self-Reliance" (1841) and transparent eyeball vision in Nature (1836). Twain's use of Huck's ambivalent position-his centrality as a protagonist in the novel in spite of his marginality in society-renegotiates Emerson's valorization of nonconformity, wholeness, and nonchalance as the characteristics of both boyhood and "a true man," Emerson's term for the ideal individual in "Self-Reliance." I also read Twain's satire of two different types of masculine characters-Bob and the Child of Calamity, boatmen of the Southern frontier, and Colonel Grangerford, patriarch of a Southern aristocratic family-as Twain's denouncement of the antebellum desire for transcendental vision, which Emerson crystalizes into his notion of transparent eyeball in Nature.

This paper examined the effects of empowerment on international marriage migrant women. The assimilation, integration, separation, and marginality were as proxy for the cultural adaptiveness. The power distance, uncertainty avoidance, individualism, masculinity, long term orientation were as proxy for the cultural distance. The self-image, real power, the extent of social participation were as proxy for the empowerment. Based on the analysis of two hundred cases, the following results were found. First, international marriage migrant women's cultural adaptiveness have a positively significant influence on their empowerment. Second, international marriage migrant women's cultural distance have a positively significant influence on their empowerment. Third, international marriage migrant women's cultural adaptiveness and cultural distance have a positively significant influence on their empowerment. This study suggests that cultural adaptiveness and cultural distance are main factors for the empowerment of international marriage migrant women.

This study adopts 'intersectionality' as a key concept of Sheila Levrant de Bretteville's design works. As a method of research, this research suggests the definition of intersectionality, from the idea of black feminism. Analysis of the features are such as 1) Typography of speech, 2) Collection of narrative, and 3) site specific installation. The inclusion of the various situations of the individuals reflected in the design throughout de Bretteville's works has made it possible to guarantee the intersectionality. De Bretteville overthrows the context of the power in which the design is placed, embracing forgotten or less illuminated positions. As a result, this research could derive three implications such as 1) visualization of invisibility, 2) subjectification of object, and 3) demarginalization of marginality. The perspective of the intersectionality are in line with the values of contemporary Korean society and might be an insight for researchers who want to establish a design philosophy.

The purpose of this article is to examine the conflicts and political implications of the various linguistic practices concerning how to call old age, and to illuminate the reasons for these conflicts in the cultural sphere. Recently, the issue of proper ways of calling old age has become problematized. As a result, new ways of addressing older people are being devised, which signifies the marginalization of old age. These new ways of calling older people, however, are not settling the problems. It is because the ageist, gender-discriminatory, status-conscious culture of Korea marginalizes the meaning of the various ways of calling old age. As the otherization of old age deepens in the cultural realm, old age becomes a site where various features of marginality accumulate. The academy and the professionals need to be aware of the political implications of the various ways of calling old age, and to strive to surmount discriminatory linguistic practices.

According as the number of immigrants has dramatically increased since last 10years, immigrants' acculturation has become a matter of great importance to Korean society. This study reviews theories on acculturation in leisure studies, specifically marginality vs ethnicity theory, assimilation theory and it's extended models, Berry's box and it's extended models, and cross-cultural vs cultural perspectives on acculturation research. Moreover, It also examines domestic research trend for some aspects such as the number of publishing articles a year, major issues and theories applied to domestic studies, methodology and employees. Finally, some kinds of suggestion for domestic studies in the near future are discussed.
