  • Waveform micropile is an advanced construction method that combined the concept of conventional micropile with jet grouting method. This new form of micropile was developed to improve frictional resistance, which consequently leads to achieving higher bearing capacity and cost efficiency. Two field tests were conducted to examine the field applicability as well as to verify the effects of bearing capacity enhancement. In particular, waveform micropile construction using jet grouting method was performed to evaluate the viability of waveform micropile installation. After testing, the surrounding ground was excavated to check the accomplishment on the shape of waveform micropile. The result showed that waveform micropile can be installed by adjusting the grouting time and pressure. In the loading tests, waveform micropile's bearing capacity increased by 1.4 to 2.3 times depending on their shapes when compared with conventional micropile. Overall results clearly demonstrated that waveform micropile is an enhanced construction method that can improve bearing capacity.

  • With the increasing usages of micropile, several researchers have been studying the bearing characteristics of micropile or micropile-raft system. But most cases of research were focused on the bearing capacity of micropile-raft system on sand layer. And it was not considered that the bearing capacity of micropile-raft system was affected by the failure mode of soil and pile installation conditions. Thereby this study conducted the numerical analysis to estimate the bearing capacity of micropile-raft system on sand or silt layer with different shear failure mode. It was found that the bearing capacity of micropile-raft system installed in positive or negative angle was larger than that of the system installed in vertical angle, in the case of the sand layer undergoing the general shear failure. In the case of silt layer undergoing the punching shear failure, the bearing capacity of micropile-raft system installed only in negative angle was larger than that installed in vertical or positive angle. And the bearing capacity of foundation system in positive angle was similar to the vertical micropile-raft system.

  • The concrete cap, which was established on the top of the micropile, usually considered as an important structural component in micropile supported foundation systems. However, relatively few studies have been made on the load sharing behavior of the capped micropile foundation systems. The primary objective of this study is to assess the load sharing behavior of the capped micropile foundation systems. Therefore, a full-scale test on an instrumented capped micropile is conducted for establishing the load-displacement responses. Nonlinear numerical method was used to quantify the load sharing behavior of the pile cap and micropile respectively. As a result, it was found that the pile cap shares about 50% load from final loading steps in the case of 2 by 1 micropile foundation systems. In the case of 2 by 2, the pile cap shares about 30% load from final loading steps. In addition, the load sharing behavior of the micropile cap becomes larger with an increase in spacing and the battered angle of micropile respectively.

  • The micropile, which is a kind of the in-situ manufactured pile with small diameter of 100~300mm, is constructed by installing a steel bar or pipe and injecting grout into a borehole. The application fields of micropile are being gradually expanded in a limited space of down-town area, because the micropile has various advantages with low vibration and noise in method and compact size in machine, etc. Mostly, the micropile has been applied to secure the safety of structures, depending on the increment of bearing capacity and the restraint of displacement. The micropile is expected to be used in various fields due to its effectiveness and potentiality in the future. The model test, focused on the interaction between micropile and soil in this study, was carried out. The micropile is installed under footing(concept of "structure supporting"). With the test results and soil deformation analysis, the reinforcement effect(relating to bearing capacity and settlement) was analysed in a qualitative and quantitative manner, respectively. Consequently, it is hoped to demonstrate the improvement of an efficiency and application in the design and construction of micropile.

  • In this study, a series of centrifuge tests were performed in order to observe the bearing capacity of waveform micropile, a new concept of micropile that uses a modified jet grouting process. A total of six models were considered, conventional micropile, jet grouted pile, and four different shapes of waveform micropiles. The test results indicated that the waveform micropile effectively contributes to the increase of the bearing capacity compared to the micropile without the shear keys. Among the waveform micropiles, the model that has a relatively small space between the shear keys showed the most significant improvement of load capacity. Additionally, the ultimate load capacities of all piles were compared using well-known estimation method. As a result, P-S curve method and total settlement method with 25.4 mm were considered suitable to account ultimate load for the waveform micropile.

  • The waveform micropile is a type of foundation that has a single or multiple shear keys on the pile shaft, and it is constructed through a jet grouting method as a way to increase the shaft resistance of the bonded area between the pile and the soil. In this paper, a geotechnical centrifuge test was performed to study the axial performance of the waveform micropile from other models. The six test models consisted of three waveform micropiles with a single shear key at three different depths, a waveform micropile with multiple shear keys, a conventional micropile, and a jet grouting micropile. Based on the test results, it was clearly shown that the waveform micropile increased in its bearing capacity compared to the other models without the shear key. Additionally, it was observed that the confining pressure for the location of a shear key is directly related to the increase of the bearing capacity.

  • Recently in Korea, the policy is being proceeded to build a intergenerational housing on artificial ground of railroad site for utilizing rental house. Due to narrow space of rail road site, suitable method have to be developed such as micropiles which is known as a method of a fast construction. However, If micropile is used as foundations for the super structure, construction cost is increases compared with other pile. Consequently, new concept micropile proposed to improve both bearing capacity and cost efficiency of general micropile. New concept micropile consists of waveform cement grout surrounding tread bar that formed by grouting the soil layer with jet grouting method as control the grout pressure and flow. The micropile with waveform is expected to decrease the construction cost by cut down pile length of general micropile. This paper examined the behavior of the new concept micropile with waveform subjected to axial load using two-dimensional axisymmetric numerical analyses method. According to the numerical result, there will cost effectiveness as the pile displacement decreased despite the length of waveform micropile is down about 5% from a general micropile under the same loading condition. Also, the effect of skin friction force which mobilized from the waveform of micropile appeared at relatively soft ground.

  • In this study, the reinforcing effect of micropile for weathered rock is analysed by laboratory model tests. Especially, the effect of the number, the surface roughness, and length of micropile are focused. The results of tests are as follows: $\circled1$ The deformation modulus of reinforced ground is less than equivalent deformation modulus, and $\circled2$ Increasing effect of unconfined compressive strength is not large as times as increasing the number of micropile.

  • The lateral bearing capacity of the micropile depends on the installed conditions such as number, installation angle and spacing of the pile. Existing research on micropile has been limited to the evaluation of vertical bearing characteristics and suggestion of effective installation methods, and there are few studies on failure mechanisms such as failure mode. And most of the studies on the lateral bearing capacity of micropile are also on the 1-row micropile. Therefore, in this study, a model test was performed to evaluate the behavior and lateral bearing characteristics of a 2-row micropile when the installed conditions such as the installation length, angle, and spacing of the pile were different. As a result of the model test, when the installation angle is θ > 0° (Not cross installation), the lateral bearing capacity of 2-row micropile depends on the spacing of the piles, and the installation angle θ = +30° was the most effective for increasing the bearing capacity. In addition, when the installation angle is θ < 0° (Overlap installation), it depends on the spacing and angle of the pile, and the condition of installation angle θ = -15° was found to be the most effective for increasing the bearing capacity.
