The rheological and penetration characteristics of sodium alginate and xanthan gum aqueous solutions were analyzed for the development of biopolymer-based injection materials. The results of viscosity measurements for the rheological characteristics analysis show that all aqueous biopolymer solutions exhibit a tendency for shear-thinning, i.e., the apparent viscosity decreases as the shear rate increases. In addition, a regression analysis using several models (Power-law, Casson, Sisko, and Cross) was applied to the shear-thinning fluid analysis results, the highest accuracy was determined by applying the power-law model. The micromodel experiment for the penetration characteristics analysis determined that all biopolymer aqueous solutions show higher pore saturation than water, and that pore saturation tends to increase as the flow rate and concentration increases. When comparing the rheological and penetration characteristics of the biopolymer aqueous solution used in this study, the xanthan gum aqueous solution showed a fully developed shear-thinning tendency, unlike the sodium alginate aqueous solution. This tendency is considered to have the advantage of enhancement injectability and pore saturation.
The degree of saturation determines the connectivity of void space and the particle surface. Thus, it greatly affects the electrical conductivity of soils. This study aimed to analyze the electrical conductivities of coarse grains with a high relevance of pore water conduction and fine grains with a high relevance of surface conduction based on the degree of saturation. It also aimed to express the electrical conductivity of unsaturated soils as a combination of surface and pore water conductions using the modified Archie's equation. Samples were prepared in a plastic cell equipped with four electrodes, and the electrical conductivity was measured based on the porosity at various degrees of saturation (40%~100%). The results demonstrate that Archie's equation can be used to express the electrical conductivity of coarse grains, with a saturation exponent of ~1.93 regardless of the pore water conductivity. However, the saturation exponent of fine grains varied considerably with pore water concentration. This variation can be attributed to the relative magnitude of surface conduction with respect to the electrical conductivity of soils at different pore water concentrations. Thus, the degree of saturation has varying effects on pore water conduction and surface conduction. Therefore, different saturation exponents must be used for pore water conduction and surface conduction to predict the electrical conductivity of unsaturated soils using the modified Archie's equation.
Coupled finite element analysis is carried out to study the effect of degree of saturation on the vertical displacements and pore water pressures simultaneously by developing a FORTRAN90 code. The finite element formulation adopted in the present study is based upon Biot's consolidation theory to include partially saturated soils. Numerical methods are applied to a two-dimensional plane strain strip footing (flexible) problem and the effect of variable degree of saturation on the response of excess pore water pressure dissipation and settlement of the footing is studied. The immediate settlement in the case of partly saturated soils is larger than that of a fully saturated soil, the reason being the presence of pore air in partially saturated soils. On the other hand, the excess pore water pressure for partially saturated soil are smaller than those for fully saturated soil.
Laboratory tests have revealed that the liquefaction resistance of sands depends strongly upon the degree of saturation, which is expressed in terms of the pore pressure coefficient, B. The velocity of compression waves(i.e. P-waves), which have been known to be influenced largely by the degree of saturation and can be measured conveniently in the field, appears as an indicator of saturation. In this paper, the Stokoe type torsional shear(TS) testing equipment is modified to saturate the specimen and measure the velocities of P-wave and S-wave and pore pressure buildup. The velocities of P-wave and S-wave for Toyoura sand from Japan is measured and compared at the various B-value (degree of saturation) which are partially saturated to fully saturated conditions. Additionally, the variation of the pore water pressure induced during undrained TS tests at the various B-value is measured and analyzed.

The objective of this study was to identify the effect of the degree of saturation on the resilient modulus of cohesive soils as subgrade. Six representative cohesive soils representing A-4, A-6, and A-7-6 soil types collected from road construction sites across Ohio, were tested in the laboratory to determine their basic engineering properties. Resilient modulus tests were conducted on unsaturated cohesive soils at optimum moisture content, and samples compacted to optimum conditions but allowed to fully saturate. The subgrade compacted at optimum moisture content may be fully saturated due to seasonal change. Laboratory tests on fully saturated cohesive soils showed that the resilient modulus of saturated soils decreased to less than half that of soil specimens tested at optimum moisture content. The reduction of resilient modulus would possibly be caused by the buildup of pore water pressure. In resilient modulus testing performed in this study on saturated samples, pore water pressure increases were observed. Pore water pressure and residual pore water pressure gradually increased with an increase in deviator stress.
To investigate the relation between pore fluid conductivity and bulk resistivity of a rock sample it is assumed that electrolyte solution perfectly substitute the pore fluid that occupied the pore space within the sample in general. In this study, it is investigated that how much can the electrolyte solution substitute the pore fluid by repeating the same saturation process. Four kinds of NaCl solutions of 8, 160, 3200, 64000 ${\mu}S$/cm are used. The saturation process has repeated four times for each electrolyte in increasing conductivity order first then four times each in decreasing order. The more the saturation process repeated with the same electrolyte, the more electrolyte solution substitute the pore fluid. Geometric mean of bulk resistivity in increasing and decreasing orders with the same electrolyte solution is assumed to be mostly close to the bulk resistivity with perfect substitution. Bulk resistivity measurements for both increasing and decreasing order differs within 10% to the geometric mean when repeating the saturation process 4 times while maximum 40% difference is observed when single saturation process for each electrolyte solution with increasing order. The modified parallel resistant model can generally represent the relations between pore fluid resistivity and bulk resistivity in the experiment, but more experimental data with various rock samples with different porosity is needed to generalize the model.

The aim of the work described in this paper was to confirm the application of the equation of the soil-water characteristic curves on an unsaturated soil. A series of suction test for unsaturated soils was conducted on the selected 4 kinds of soil using modified pressure extractor apparatus. And it was carried out to analyse The experimental parameters which can be describe the soil-water characteristics, were determined by using the data obtained from the experiment. From the results, it was found that The matric suction varied according to the grain size distribution, amount of fine grain particles and void ratio. Also it was found that the residual degree of saturation was decreased with in crease of the void ratio, but the pore size distribution index and air entry value were increased with in crease of the void ratio. And The application of the soil-water characteristic curve equation was confirmed for the various conditions and the various state by the comparison between the measured degree of saturation and the predicted degree of saturation.
Liquefaction resistance depends strongly upon the degree of saturation, which is expressed in terms of the pore pressure coefficient, B. The B-value has been widely used to quantify the state of saturation of laboratory samples. However, it is practically impossible to determine in situ state of saturation by using the B-value. So, P-wave velocity can be alternatively used as a convenient index for evaluating the in situ state of saturation. In this paper, the Stokoe type torsional shear (TS) testing system was modified to saturate the specimen, with which it is also possible to measure P ($V_p$), S-wave velocity ($V_s$) and the excess pore water pressure buildup In order to examine the effect of B-value for nearly saturated sands. A series of the tests were carried out at 3 relative densities (40%, 50% and 75%) and various B-values using Toyoura sand. Based on the test results, the variations of $V_p\;and\;V_s$ with B-value were analyzed and compared with a existing theoretically derived formula. The normalized pore water pressure, $du/{\sigma}{_0}'$ and cyclic threshold shear strain, ${\gamma}^c_{th}$ with B-value were also analyzed. Additionally the test results related to pore water pressure were analyzed by $V_p$ to apply to the field seismic analysis.
At low normal stress levels tensile strength of sand varies with either saturation or suction of soil in an up-and-down manner with a peak tensile strength that can occur at any degree of saturation. A theory that accurately predicts tensile strength of wet sand is presented. A closed form expression for tensile strength unifies tensile strength characteristics in all three water retention regimes: pendular, funicular, and capillary. Three parameters are employed in the theory; namely, the Internal friction angle (at low normal stress) ${\phi}_t$, the inverse value of the air-entry pressure ${\alpha}$, and the pore size spectrum parameter n. It is shown that the magnitude of peak tensile strength is dominantly controlled by the ${\alpha}$ parameter. The saturation at which peak tensile strength occurs only depends on the pore size spectrum parameter n.

The initial condition of $\Delta \sigma_3 \;=\; \Delta u$ is used for analyzing the time dependent behavior of ground. This is based on the concept that the coefficient of pore water B is the unity on the condition of saturation. but some measured consolidation data in the field showed that the pore water pressure was not dissipated as time elapsed but it was maintained constant value or it's dissipation rate was slower than that of the predicted. and so the measured data of pore water pressure was not consistent with that of settlement. In this study, the rheological model for the pore water pressure behavior on undrained condition was induced and compared with the experiment data of the literature. The result showed that the suggested model was consistent well with the result of experiment, but the suggested model could not explain the effect of the decrease of void ratio according to consolidation.
