The mathematical proofs of refraction law and its didactical significances (굴절의 법칙의 수학적 증명과 그 교수학적 의의)

  • The law of refraction, which is called Snell's law in physics, has a significant meaning in mathematics history. After Snell empirically discovered the refraction law $\frac{v_1}{sin{\theta}_1}=\frac{v_2}{sin{\theta}_2$ through countless observations, many mathematicians endeavored to deduce it from the least time principle, and the need to surmount these difficulties was one of the driving forces behind the early development of calculus by Leibniz. Fermat solved it far advance of others by inventing a method that eventually led to the differential calculus. Historically, mathematics has developed in close connection with physics. Physics needs mathematics as an auxiliary discipline, but physics can also belong to the lived-through reality from which mathematics is provided with subject matters and suggestions. The refraction law is a suggestive example of interrelations between mathematical and physical theories. Freudenthal said that a purpose of mathematics education is to learn how to apply mathematics as well as to learn ready-made mathematics. I think that the refraction law could be a relevant content for this purpose. It is pedagogically sound to start in high school with a quasi-empirical approach to refraction. In college, mathematics and physics majors can study diverse mathematical proof including Fermat's original method in the context of discussing the phenomenon of refraction of light. This would be a ideal environment for such pursuit.

  • This paper descirbes about effects of refraction of ultrasonic beam on B-mode tomogram. Both compution based on Snell's law and the experiments performed using B-mode scanner and schlieren optical method are discussed on a circular phantom immersed in water. In these results, if the discrepancy of sound velocity is more than 0. 6%, the distortion of the B-mode image becomes conspicuous and a target beyound the phantom may disappear or displayed as two targets depending on the velocity of the phantom.

  • In this paper, we suggested that those elementary school students who are gifted in science should be taught basic and fundamental concepts to solve applied problems. We developed a teaching model based on a lesson regarding the path that light takes when passing through a lens on the base of refraction of light. We applied the teaching model to scientifically-gifted elementary school students and analyzed the results. The teaching model is based on the circulation loaming model appropriate for learning such concepts. The problems were designed and applied in order to determine the students' level of concept skills held and also to develop new teaching tools to help their understanding of concepts. As a result, we confirmed that the students, who were unable to describe the path of the light before the course of instruction was given, were able to draw and explain the path of light passing trough lens by using the law of refraction following the instruction.

  • This paper proposes the simulation algorithm of rear lamp of car using a ray tracing method that models transmission and refraction of light frequently used in computer graphics At first. To reproduce an image accurately. incident on a sight of viewer, we propose the backward ray tracing method based on spectral distribution representing physical characteristics of illuminant and object used in real. We implement the reproduction algorithm of rear lamp image applying the Bouguer-Beer's law to an optical absorptive phenomenon. As the result, more realistic image can be reproduced.

  • Optical distortion of experimental results can be found in many studies. Thus, a method of the optical correction for visualization of an axisymmetric droplet was developed in this study. The correction method was derived to extract refracted vectors. In order to obtain the refracted vectors, a projection vector and a normal vector should be calculated. Then, a distortion distance can be found by the calculated refracted vector and Snell's law. The developed method was also verified by the simulation and the experimental results to apply for a liquid droplet which was formed at a nozzle tip.

Elementary School Teachers' Understanding of Image (상에 대한 초등학교 교사들의 이해)

  • This study investigated elementary school teachers' understanding of the image formation by converging lens, pinholes camera, mirror and water. In each case teachers were asked to draw the ray diagram to indicate the position of the image. Teachers' ray diagrams were analyzed in accordance with the scientific process of image formation. Results of analysis showed that teacher's conceptions were classified into five levels for each situation. And most of the teachers were in level 3 and level 4 in each case. Because they had difficulties in the appling scientific conception(propagating path of light, diffused reflection from each object point, role of the eye, ray tracing) to finding location of image. Also most of teachers didn't know how to apply the law of reflection and refraction to each situation. The study finally discussed the teacher training program of the optical image.

  • Purpose: In this paper, we have dealt with problems and improvement of korean optician system. Methods: Using the relevant material of korean optician system and international optometrist system, provides the theoretical basis of the need for regulatory changes optician. Results: The people with refractive errors are increasing, 67% of refractive error test is made from optical shop and korean optician are sufficient trained, many opticians are in charge of the refractive error test at the ophthalmic hospital. We have confirmed that current law does not reflect adequately the nature of optician's work. Conclusions: Since current capacity of the Korean opticians and education system ready to provide health services for people, therefore an korean optician must redefine the law to fit the reality.

  • In this paper, we propose a method that represents a mathematical form of wave propagation by using the fact the refractive index determining wave propagation characteristic is a function of altitude. Proposed method uses Snell's law that expresses relationship between incident angle and refraction angle when incident wave passes medium having a different refractive index. We present the simulation results about wave propagation by setting the square of refractive index in the form of the polynomial for altitude and show that it is possible to estimate the coefficients of the polynomial through the angle information from vertical axis of multiple radar systems.

  • Based on the dispersive feature of the dielectric function of noble metals and the wave vector conservation in physics, both the plasma effect and the complex refractive index, which are profoundly correlated to the complex dielectric function and permeability, have been studied and analyzed. The condition to induce a bulk or a surface plasma in the visible region will not be satisfied, and there will be one solution for the real and the imaginary parts of the refractive index, restricting it only to region I of the complex plane. The results given in this work will aid in understanding the properties of light transmission at the metal/dielectric interface as characterized by the law of refraction in nature.

  • This paper has studied dissymmetrical light distribution design using the secondary optics in the simulation. fundamental Lambertian radiation distribution based on LED has been cut off by the secondary optics, and the first surface slope of lens and second surface slope of total reflection area have been calculated through formula. PMMA (the index of refraction: 1.49361) which is material of lens has been selected. critical angle($42.02993^{\circ}$) between Air and PMMA has been calulated by snell's law, and total reflection angle slope has been selected about $16.67^{\circ}$ to occur the total reflection. when the first surface slope and the second surface slope has been set up, Rays of all total reflection area have generated the total reflection. finally, designed LED Module has been estimated by Korean Industrial Standards for LED safety street lighting. dissymmetrical light distribution have been analyzed with reached effect of road illuminance, and average road illuminance which are each 70.6 lx, 40.35 lx, and 25.88 lx have been satisfied with Korean Industrial Standards for LED safety street lighting.
