  • Objectives : I report 12 cases of strabismus presented at [Oriental Medical Clinic of Kim Joong-Ho and Strabismus - Amblyopia Clinic, East-West Neo Medical Center, Kyung Hee University] from 2nd March 2006 to 29th February 2008. All have experienced good improvement of strabismus by treatment with Oriental medicine. Methods : Patients were treated with acupuncture, infra-red and herb medicine. The acupuncture points of (B2) 絲竹空(TE23) 承泣(S1) 陽白(G14) 太陽(E36) were mainly used. Herb medicines prescribed were Gagamseunggal-tang and Gamiboik-tang. Results : 9 cases of strabismus were caused by paralysis of the sixth cranial nerve and the third cranial nerve, while 3 cases happened with concomitant strabismus of esotropia and exotropia. They were treated to recover paralytic muscles and unelastic muscles around the eyes and face. Treatment took between 1 and 8 months. Conclusions : In the results of this study, treatment was effective to correct position at the eyeball. I report it is possible to treat strabismus successfully with Oriental medicine in a shorter time compared to western medicine.

  • Strabismus is a misalignment of eye, and which devided paralytic and non-paralytic strabismus. Paralytic strabismus is generally a neurological problem, especially 3rd, 4th or 6th nerve. The abducent nerve was most common affected. Paralytic strabismus are treated based on the theory of Oriental medicine with herbal medicine bal-san(發散) and gue-pung(祛風) effects and acupuncture around the eyes and etc. Authors experienced one case of the strabismus of abducent nerve palsy, 35-year-old male, showed disorder abduction of Lt. eye, diplopia and dizziness. Disorder abduction of Lt. eye, diplopia and dizziness and cervical pain improved under the treatment of acupuncture and herbal medicine Thus further clinical study and treatment principle should be made to raise the recovery rate for paralytic strabismus and it's effectiveness of Oriental medical treatment should be informed.

  • Objectives : Strabismus refers to the muscle imbalanced that results from improper alignment of the visual axes of the two eyes. It may be divided into paralytic and nonparalytic strabismus. Paralytic strabismus is primarily result from neurologic problem and nonparalytic strabismus is more strictly opthalmologic problem. We try to improve the remedial value of acute paralytic strabismus. Methods : We treated the cases by use of electra-acupuncture at paralytic extraocular muscles. The cases were treated almost daily and every treatment were enforced 10 minutes. We use the PG-306 electra-acupuncture products(Suzuki Iryoki Co. Japan) and apply the low consequence wave of 1-8Hz Results : We found that two cases were recovered almost three months and one case is treated till now and improved. So we try to apply this treatment in many cases and make the treating protocol of acute paralytic strabismus.

  • Strabismus refers to a extra-ocular muscle imbalance that results in improper alignment of the visual axes of two eyes. It may be divided into paralytic and non-paralytic strabismus. Paralytic strabismus is primarily a neurological problem: non-paralytic strabismus is more strictly an ophthalmologic problem. This case report focuses on paralytic strabismus resulting from palsies of the third and the sixth cranial nerves, respectively. Oculomotor nerve palsies result in binocular diplopia with characteristic patterns of strabismus. Oculomotor nerve provides motor and parasympathetic innervation to the eyes. Acquired oculomotor nerve palsies are not uncommon. Injury to the third nerve may result in complete or partial dysfunction. Complete third nerve palsy is manifested by ptosis, dilated pupil, an eye that is deviated down and out in primary position, and limited adduction, elevation, and depression. Patients with unilateral sixth nerve palsy complain of binocular, horizontal diplopia esotropia in the primary position due to unopposed action of the medial rectus and limitation of abduction due to weakness of the lateral rectus. Diplopia is worse in the direction of the paretic lateral rectus muscle. Paralytic strabismus are treated, based on the theory of Oriental medicine. with berbal medicines having gun-bi(健脾), bae-to(培土), gue-pung(祛風) effect of acupuncture around the eyes and etc. We describe a 63-year-old woman with complete the 3rd cranial nerve palsy and a 32-year-old woman with the unilateral 6th cranial nerve palsy who treated with acupuncture and herbal medicines and showed complete recovery.

  • Strabismus is one of the most common disease that might be associated with vision impairment. Especially in infants and children, it is critical to detect strabismus at an early age because uncorrected strabismus may go on to develop amblyopia. To this end, ophthalmologists usually perform the Hirschberg test, which observes corneal light reflex (CLR) to determine the presence and type of strabismus. However, this test is usually done manually in a hospital, which might be difficult for patients who live in a remote area with poor medical access. To address this issue, we propose an automatic strabismus screening method that calculates the CLR ratio to determine the presence of strabismus based on image processing. In particular, the method first employs a pre-trained face detection model and a 68 facial landmarks detector to extract the eye region image. The data points located in the limbus are then collected, and the least square method is applied to obtain the center coordinates of the iris. Finally, the coordinate of the reflective light point center within the iris is extracted and used to calculate the CLR ratio with the coordinate of iris edges. Experimental results with several images demonstrate that the proposed method can be a promising solution to provide strabismus screening for patients who cannot visit hospitals.

It may be divided into paralytic and nonparalytic strabismus. Paralytic strabismus is primarily result from neurologic problem and nonparalytic strabismus is more strictly opthalmologic problem. At first we used this method(electroacupuncture at oculomotor muscles) and gained good recoveries for adult paralytic strabismus cases or Miller-Fisher syndrome, and I tried to know the effective and safety for children cases. Methods : We treated the case by using the electroacupuncture at paralytic oculomator muscles. The case was treated almost daily and every treatment was enforced 10 minutes. We use the PG-306 electra-acupuncture products(Suzki Iryoki Co. • Strabismus is a non-aligned state;the visual axis of each eye is not directed toward the same direction at the same time. Clinically, the degrees of strabismus are measured by prism cover test, corneal reflex test (Hirschberg test), prism reflex test (Krimsky prism test), But corneal reflex test and prism reflex test is a possibility that errors occur. we suggest a computer-aided diagnosis for strabismus. We made a mobile application to measure angles of strabismus. For 34 patients, we tested our application. The result of comparing between two methods, It showed a difference 7 Prism Diopter(PD). Our application gives strabismus angles just using a camera and a smart device. Therefore, it can reduce the cost and make the diagnosis of strabismus accurate.

  • The author performed in 10 cases under the age of 13 years who were visited to hospital from July 1994 to July 1995. I have assessed information such as type of deviation, detected time of strabismus, past history, family history. The most of patient were esotropia. I have experienced good improvement to recover strabismus by the Oriental Medicine. The acupuncture points of B2, TE23, S1, G14, E36 were used. Herbal medicine was treated GAMIBOJOONGYKGI-TANG. It was supposed to encourage digestive system and to continue elastic capacity. From the results of this study, it is effective to change of correct position at the deviatinal eyeball and to treat amplyopia with strabismus. It was reported possble to treat strabismus without operation and glasses.

  • Stabismus refers to a muscle imbalance that results in improper alignment of the visual axes of the two eyes. It may be divided into paralytic and nonparalytic strabismus. Paralytic strabismus is primarily a neurologic problem ; nonaralytic strabismus is more strictly an ophthalmologic problem. Characteristic clinical disturbances result from lesions of the third, fourth, and sixth cranial nerves. Lesions of the sixth nerve result in a paralysis of lateral or outward movement and a crossing of the visual axes. We present a case of paralytic strabismus in 24-year-old female who recovered by Oriental medicine, including acupuncture and herbal medicines.
