The present fractional-order plasticity models for granular soil are mainly established under the triaxial compression condition, due to its difficult in analytically solving the fractional differentiation of the third stress invariant, e.g., Lode's angle. To solve this problem, a three dimensional fractional-order elastoplastic model based on the transformed stress method, which does not rely on the analytical solution of the Lode's angle, is proposed. A nonassociated plastic flow rule is derived by conducting the fractional derivative of the yielding function with respect to the stress tensor in the transformed stress space. All the model parameters can be easily determined by using laboratory test. The performance of this 3D model is then verified by simulating multi series of true triaxial test results of rockfill.
Coprinellus congregatus secreted a laccase isozyme when the culture was transferred to an acidic liquid medium (pH 4.1). The laccase cDNA gene (clac2) was used as a probe for cloning of the genomic laccase gene (lac2) including the promoter (Plac2). The open reading frame (ORF) of lac2 had 526 deduced amino acids and four conserved copper binding domains as other fungal laccases. Recombinant plasmid (pRSlac2p-cDNA) of lac2 cDNA with its own promoter was transformed in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Expression of the transformed lac2 gene was induced by oxidative stress ($H_2O_2$) in yeast and the survival rate of the transformed yeast strain was greatly increased when compared with that of the control strain transformed with pRS316 yeast vector.
Stress-strain responses of weak-to-strong carbonate rocks used for tunnel construction were studied. The analysis of applicability of exponential stress-strain models based on Haldane's distribution function is presented. It is revealed that these exponential equations presented in transformed forms allow us to predict stress-strain relationships over the whole pre-failure strain range without mechanical testing of rock samples under compression using a press machine and to avoid measurements of axial failure strains for which relatively large values of compressive stress are required. In this study, only one point measurement (small strain at small stress) using indentation test and uniaxial compressive strength determined by a standard Schmidt hammer are considered as input parameters to predict stress-strain response from zero strain/zero stress up to failure. Observations show good predictive capabilities of transformed stress-stress models for weak-to-strong (${\sigma}_c$ <100 MPa) heterogeneous carbonate rocks exhibiting small (< 0.5 %), intermediate (< 1 %) and large (> 1 %) axial strains.
The objective of this paper is to study the two dimensional deformation in transversely isotropic thermoelastic medium without energy dissipation due to time harmonic sources using new modified couple stress theory, a continuum theory capable to predict the size effects at micro/nano scale. The couple stress constitutive relationships have been introduced for transversely isotropic thermoelastic medium, in which the curvature tensor is asymmetric and the couple stress moment tensor is symmetric. Fourier transform technique is applied to obtain the solutions of the governing equations. Assuming the deformation to be harmonically time-dependent, the transformed solution is obtained in the frequency domain. The application of a time harmonic concentrated and distributed sources have been considered to show the utility of the solution obtained. The displacement components, stress components, temperature change and couple stress are obtained in the transformed domain. A numerical inversion technique has been used to obtain the solutions in the physical domain. The effects of angular frequency are depicted graphically on the resulted quantities.
Duncan & Chang(1970) proposed the Duncan-Chang model that a linear relation of transformed stress-strain plots was reconstituted from a nonlinear relation of stress-strain curve of triaxial compression test using hyperbolic theory so as to estimate an initial tangent modulus and ultimate deviator stress for the soil specimen. Although the transformed stress-strain plots show a linear relationship theoretically, they actually show a nonlinearity at both low and high values of strain of the test. This phenomenon indicates that the stress-strain curve is not a complete form of a hyperbola. So, if linear regression analyses for the transformed stress-strain plot are performed over a full range of strain of a test, error in the estimation of their linear equations is unavoidable depending on ranges of strain with non-linearity. In order to reduce such an error, a modified regression analysis method is proposed in this study, in which linear regression analyses for transformed stress-strain plots are performed over the entire range of strain except the range the non-linearity is shown around starting and ending of the test, and then the initial tangent modulus and ultimate deviator stresses are calculated. Isotropically consolidated-drained triaxial compression tests were performed on compacted weathered soil with a modified Proctor density to obtain their model parameters. The modified regression analyses for transformed stress-strain plots were performed and analyzed results are compared with results estimated by 2 points method (Duncan et al., 1980). As a result of analyses, initial tangent moduli are about 4.0% higher and ultimate deviator stresses are about 2.9% lower than those values estimated by Duncan's 2 points method.
Dehydrins (LEA Dll proteins) are one of the typical families of plant proteins that accumulate in response to dehydration, cold stress, abscisic acid, or during seed maturation. A 1.3-kb cDNA was cloned from a cDNA expression library of 5-day-old germinating maize scutellums under drought stress. The deduced protein sequence indicated a dehydrin gene encoding SK$_3$ LEA protein typically expressed during cold acclimation, but not by drought stress in barley and wheat. Thus, it was named maize DEHYDRIN2 (ZmDhn2). It accumulates rapidly and highly in drought-stressed scutellum and leaf tissues at any stage, but not under cold stress. ZmDhn2 gene was transformed into Arabidopsis thaliana for functional analysis under drought condition. From electrolyte leakage test, no significant difference showed between wild type and transformants under normal growth condition, but the leakage level of electrolyte in wild type plants was about 3 times as high as that in the transformed plants under drought stress. It suggests that ZmDHN2 playa role in increasing drought tolerance.

The results of this study intended to clarify the apoptotic effects of curcumin on Epstein-Barr virus transformed human B lymphoma (EBV-B) cells are summarized as follows: It was found that curcumin induced endoplasmic reticulum(ER) stress as well as apoptotic cell death in EBV-B cells, although the magnitude of action was insignificant. When EBV-B cells activated by pokeweed mitogen (PWM) were treated with the same concentrations of curcumin, it was found that higher ER stress (GRP78, P-PERK, XBP-1, ATF6, and CHOP expressed) increased unfold protein response (UPR) and thus, apoptosis attributed to ER stress, compared to non-activated EBV-B cells In conclusion, it is expected that curcumin will play an important role for leukemia treatment.
The stress distribution and the critical stresses in concrete pavements were analyzed using formulations in the transformed field domains when dual-wheel single-, tandem-, and tridem-axle loads were applied. First the accuracy of the transformed field domain analysis results was verified by comparing with the finite element analysis results. Then, the stress distribution along the longitudinal and transverse directions was investigated, and the effects of slab thickness, concrete elastic modulus, and foundation stiffness on the stress distribution were studied. The effect of the tire contact pressure related to the tire print area was also studied, and the location of the critical stress occurrence in concrete pavements was finally investigated. From this study, it was found that the critical concrete stress due to multi-axle loads became larger as the concrete elastic modulus increased, the slab thickness increased, and the foundation stiffness decreased. The number of axles did not tend to affect the critical stress ratio except for a small foundation stiffness value with which the critical stress ratio became significantly larger as the number of axles increased. The critical stress location in the transverse direction tended to move into the interior as the tire contact pressure increased, the concrete elastic modulus increased, the slab thickness increased, and the foundation stiffness decreased. The critical stress location in the longitudinal direction was under the axle for single- and tandem-axle loads, but for tridem-axle loads, it tended to move under the middle axle from the outer axles as the concrete elastic modulus and/or slab thickness increased and the foundation stiffness decreased.

For BEM analyses of the impact problems of dissimilar materials, the connected multi-region method using perfect bonded conditions on the interface boundaries was added to two-dimensional Laplace transformed-domain BEM program for a single region analysis. It was confirmed that the BEM results of impact problems of a single-region and multi-regions for a homogeneous isotropic material are agreed well. The two-dimensional Laplace transformed-domain BEM program combined with connected multi-region method was applied to analyse several impact problems of dissimilar materials. Also the feasibility of BEM impact analyses was investigated for dissimilar materials by the analysis of the BEM results for impact problems of dissimilar materials in terms of physical aspects. As for an application, the two-dimensional Laplace transformed BEM concerning impact problems of cracks at the interface of dissimilar materials and the determinating process of the dynamic stress intensity factors by extrapolation method are presented in this paper.
Mechanical behavior of asphalt concrete that accounts for viscoelasticity and damage evolution under cyclic loading conditions is modeled and presented in this paper. An elastic-viscoelastic correspondence principle in terms of pseudo variables is applied to separately evaluate viscoelasticity and time-dependent damage growth in asphalt concrete. A microcrack growth law, which is commonly employed in linear viscoelastic fracture mechanics, is successfully used for describing the damage growth in the body. A constitutive equation in terms of stress and pseudo strain is first established for controlled-strain mode, and then transformed to controlled-stress constitutive equation by simply replacing stress and pseudo strain with pseudo stress and strain. The transformed constitutive equation in terms of pseudo stress satisfactorily predicts the mechanical behavior of asphalt concrete all the way up to failure under controlled-stress modes.
