  • The present study was undertaken to establish the decision standard of builds for the insured by using the ratio of weight-for-height as build index. Materials being examined were the ratio of weight-for-height being calculated from the actually measured heights and weights of a total of 15,838 insured persons who were examined medically at Honam Medical Department of Dong Bang Life Insurance Company, Ltd. from June, 1979 to September, 1985. The ratio of weight-for-height is calculated by the following formula. The ratio of weight-for-height(%)=$\frac{weight(kg){\times}100}{\{height(cm)-100\}{\times}0.9(kg)$ The results were as follows: 1. The distribution of the ratio of weight. for-height of the 15,838 insureds follows Log normal distribution being skewed to the left(the direction of underweight). 2. The ratio of weight-for-height were Log transformed to lead to a sym metrical pattern of distribution in which statistical rules are known to be applied more exactly. Thereafter, the establishment of dicision standard of builds was undertaken by using the log of the ratio of weight-for-height as build index. Through all ages in male, the ratio of weight-for-height indicating the range of standard lives including slight overweighted and underweighted lives besides normal lives is 80-130%, and corresponds to $"M-2{\delta}"-"M+1.5{\delta}"$ and to $M{\pm}20%$ ; in female, 85-135%, and corresponds to $"M-2{\delta}"-"M+1.5{\delta}"$ and to $M{\pm}20%$. Through all ages in male, the ratio of weight-for-height indicating the initial level of super-overweighted and super-underweighted lives is 130-150% and 75-80%,and corresponds to $M+3{\delta}\;and\;M-3{\delta}$ and to M+40% and M-25% respectively;in female, 140-160% and 75-80%, and corresponds to $M+3{\delta}\;and\;M-3{\delta}$ and to M+40%-+50% and M-25% respectively. 3. Author's rating table model for builds(a table of weight per height) is proposed. On the table, the ratings for builds, i. e. standard, super-weighted and super-underweighted lives, are listed.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate hamstring length during static uprighting position using weight distribution ratio. Methods: Ninety-six volunteers(56 males) were participated. The active knee extension test(AKE) was measured 3 times on both legs. The mean score of AKE was obtained. Then, the measurement of weight distribution ratio was observed 3 times on both legs, and its mean value was also calculated. Subjects were divided four groups based on their hamstring length measurement; both hamstring shortening group, left hamstring shortening group, right hamstring shortening group and normal hamstring length group. One-way ANOVA was employed to analyse collected data. Pearson's correlation was also hired to see any relationship between the hamstring length and the weight distribution. Results: In anterior/left area and posterior/right area, both hamstring shortening group left hamstring shortening group were superior to right hamstring shortening group and normal hamstring length group. Significant difference was existed statistically(p<.05) between groups. The correlation analysis between hamstring length and weight distribution ratio has not been shown any significant findings(Pant/post=0.733, Plt/rt=0.135). Conclusion: The results of the study may be applied to therapeutic management in posture and movement skill in musculoskeletal physical therapy.

  • In order to examine the anti-arthritic properties of ShinEumHur(SEH)-herbal acupuncture, an adjuvant-induced arthritic rat was generated by the intra-articular injection of dried cells of Mycobacterium tuberculosis emulsified in squalene into the right knee joint. Fifty microliter of SEH extract was injected into Zusanli(ST36) acupoint on the ipsilateral hind paw every other day for 2 weeks. The body weight, knee circumference, squeak threshold, and weight distribution ratio were analyzed as the assessment methods addressing arthritic symptoms such as arthritic pain, edema, and tenderness. The weight distribution ratio was measured by a digital-type analgesia instrument using the dual channel scale that separately measures the weight the arthritic rat distributes to each hind paw, and thus quantifies both of swelling and pain severities at once. The therapeutic effects of SEH-herbal acupuncture, assessed by squeaking threshold and weight distribution ratio, were observed on 8th day after the arthritis induction as compared to saline group and control group. On 10th day, SEH-herbal acupuncture therapy significantly started to alleviate the growing pattern of knee circumference of an arthritic rat in the range of 0.2㎝. However, the loss of body weight was not significantly recovered. Taken together, the SEH-herbal acupuncture exhibited the significant therapeutic efficiency to treat adjuvant-induced monoarthritis in rat.

  • According to kinetic mechanisms, liquid phase polymerization and solid phase polymerization are different in acrylonitrile (AN) polymerization, and so the relationship between the contribution ratio and molecular weight distribution (MWD) was obtained through theoretic analysis. The precipitation homopolymerization of AN was carried out in a mixture solution of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and water at $50{\sim}65^{\circ}C$ using ${\alpha}$,${\alpha}^{\prime}$-azobisisobutyronitrile as an initiator. The contribution ratio decreased and approached 0; the MWD also decreased and approached 2 with the increase of the $H_2O$/DMSO ratio from 10/90 to 90/10. The experimental data were found to coincide well with the theoretical equation derived from the mechanisms.

  • This study presents an evaluation of basic properties of light weight mortar with expanded polystyrene bead(EPB) and waste expanded polystyrene(WEP) by varying replacement rations. In order to evaluate the basic properties of the light weight mortar with EPB and WEP, unit weight, compressive strength, flexural strength, water absorption ratio, thermal conductivity and distribution of polystyrene (EPB and WEP) in hardened mortar were performed. As a result, unit volume, compressive strength, bending strength, water absorption and thermal conductivity of light weight mortar were increased, but area distribution of polystyrene decreased with increasing the replacement ratio of WEP.

  • We designed this study to compare the total body fat content and its distribution of diabetics with those of normal subjects. Skinfold thicknesses at eight sites(subscapular, subcostal, abdomen, suprailiac, triceps, forearm, thigh and calf) and body circumferences at five sites(waist, hip, arm, thigh and calf) were measured on 220 diabetics(82 male, 138 female) and on 160 nondiabetic subjects(male 57, female 103). We matched 92 pairs with diabetics and nondiabetic control subjects by sex, age, body weight and height, and made comparisons between two groups(case-control study). The results were as follows: 1) There was no significant difference in total body fat content of diabetics and control (male ; 20.40$\pm$2.12%, 19.20$\pm$3.52%, female ; 26.46$\pm$2.53%, 27.01$\pm$2.92%, respectively). However, body muscle mass(%) in diabetic men(33.37$\pm$4.19%) was significantly lower than in nondiabetic men(38.16$\pm$7.11%). 2) Diabetics, especially women, were characterized by more central body fat than control. That is, indices of centrality of body fat distribution(subscapular/triceps skinfold : STR, central/peripheral fat : CPR) of diabetics were higher than those of control. 3) Body weight, body mass index and %IBW(current body weight$\times$100/ideal body weight) had negative correlations with duration of diabetes(r=-0.23~-0.33), but total body fat content(%) and indices of body fat distribution, such as STR, CPR, waist/hip girth ratio(WHR), and waist/thigh girth ratio(WTR), were not related to duration of diabetes.

  • The surface sediments inside Hallim Harbor, one of the major harbors of Jeju Island, were sampled three times (June, September and December, 2001) and analyzed for 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), recommended by US-EPA as priority pollutants, to assess their distribution levels and to suggest their possible origins. The concentrations of PAHs ranged from 19 to 496 ng/g on a dry weight basis with a mean value of 245 ng/g, and the levels were low to moderate in comparison with other areas in the world. Based on comparisons of individual and total PAH concentrations with effects-based and equilibrium partitioning-based on sediment quality guidelines, the potential for the biological effects were expected to be low. The sedimentary PAHs may be correlated with organic carbon and mud contents to some extent. From the examinations of the four PAH origin indices, such as LMW/HMW (low molecular weight 2-3 ring PAHs over high molecular weight 4-6 ring PAHs), phenanthrene/anthracene ratio, fluoranthene/pyrene ratio, chrysene/benzo〔a〕anthracene ratio, it can be concluded that the sediment PAH contaminations were ascribed to both pyrolytic and petrogenic origins.

  • Irrigation Reservoir Water Supply Index(IRWSI), which can be applied to the effective supply and management of the irrigation water resources, was developed. IRWSI was formulated as resealed nonexceedance probabilities of two hydrologic components : reservoir storage ratio and precipitation. To generate nonexceedance probability of hydrologic component, it was important to define the optimal one among the various probability distribution function in the state of nature. To define an optimal probability distribution, in this study, four types of probability distribution function were tested by the K-S fitting, and for the calculation of IRWSI, reservoir storage ratio(%) and precipitation used Normal distribution & Gamma distribution, respectively. In this study, the weight coefficients of a and b for each hydrologic component, which is precipitation and reservoir storage ratio, was decided as 0.8 and 0.2, respectively. While some studies changed weight coefficients according to the size of basin area, this study used same values without considering that. From the analysis of drought characteristics, it was found that the IRWSI was sensitive to the size of irrigation area rather than the size of basin area, and the south-eastern region of Korea had been suffered from severe drought damage.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the distribution of duck production in duck housing as a function of the breeding period. The items in duck production distribution included body weight, feed intake, feed conversion ratio, and average duck production. All data were based on eight cycles (June and December, 2017; February, June, August, September, and November, 2018; February, 2019) at Farm Site 1 through 7. The most optimal results in the duck production distribution were observed at Site 1 for weight gain, feed intake, and feed efficiency. This could be explained by the fact that Site 1 was well managed in environmental improvement and sustainability. Based on these data, selective alternatives to improve duck production in duck farms are recommended as follows: first, proper management and recording of litter used as a flooring material are required, and second, continuous management such as temperature, relative humidity and ventilation is needed. Lastly, it is necessary to change duck facilities by introducing environmental management techniques. Furthermore, efforts to improve the overall facilities and management of duck breeding farms through additional field studies are needed in the future.
